It honours those who have lost their lives and those whose lives have been irrevocably altered by <a title=\"Extreme weather events abound, leaving no escape from climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/extreme-weather-events-abound-leaving-no-escape-from-climate-change\">extreme weather events<\/a>, rising sea levels, and other climate-related disasters. This day underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate change<\/a>, mitigate its effects, and bolster resilience against future crises.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, Commissioner Lenar\u010di\u010d emphasized the importance of global cooperation and robust policy frameworks to tackle the multifaceted <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">challenges posed by climate change<\/a>. He highlighted the EU&#8217;s ongoing efforts to reduce <a title=\"Agriculture Dept. to Invest 0M in Measuring Greenhouse Emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agriculture-dept-to-invest-300m-in-measuring-greenhouse-emissions\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>, support sustainable development, and enhance disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. The ceremony also included testimonials from individuals directly impacted by climate-related events, bringing a personal and immediate perspective to the ongoing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The commemoration is not just a day of remembrance but also a <a title=\"2024 Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program Applications Open\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2024-jacobs-foundation-research-fellowship-program-applications-open\">call<\/a> to action. It encourages policymakers, businesses, and citizens alike to take proactive steps in minimizing the impact of <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">climate change<\/a>. The EU Day for the Victims of the <a title=\"Study finds simple, cheap way to use forests to slow global climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change\">Global Climate<\/a> Crisis thus serves as both a tribute and a rallying cry, aiming to foster a resilient and sustainable future for all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2023, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission signed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/document\/download\/28ce48a0-ca48-4dca-9db8-a6db11e4242c_en?filename=Climate%20Victims%20Declaration.pdf\">Joint Declaration<\/a><button class=\"wt-unselected wt-laco wt-laco--button\" title=\"Search for available translations\" type=\"button\" aria-controls=\"laco-modal\"><\/button>\u00a0to establish an annual EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis, on 15 July each year. It is an occasion to remember victims in Europe and worldwide, as well as to raise awareness of actions people can take to reduce the <a title=\"Climate change impacts, risks and adaptation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-impacts-risks-and-adaptation\">risk of climate impacts<\/a> and to be better prepared for and respond to climate disasters.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez\u00a0<strong>Lenar\u010di\u010d<\/strong>, said:\u00a0\u201cJuly 15 marks the second EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis. Today we remember those people who have died in <a title=\"Adapting to a Warming World: Climate Change Predictions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/adapting-to-a-warming-world-climate-change-predictions\">climate disasters around the world<\/a> on the anniversary of the terrible flooding that took so many lives on this day three years ago across Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. We also take this opportunity to look ahead to the <a title=\"Beyond Tourism in Africa Innovation Challenge Coming Soon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/beyond-tourism-in-africa-innovation-challenge-coming-soon\">challenges to come<\/a>. The European Union will continue its efforts to <a title=\"Climate change mitigation: reducing emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-mitigation-reducing-emissions\">mitigate climate change<\/a> as well as to strengthen climate adaptation and resilience, giving the next generation hope for a better, safer tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke\u00a0<strong>Hoekstra<\/strong>, said:\u00a0\u201cClimate <a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">change<\/a> is a clear and present danger. It is part of our reality. Three years ago today, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands experienced devastating floods. Today, we are commemorating people who passed that day, but also in every single person who lost their life <a title=\"World faces \u2018food wars\u2019 due to geopolitics and climate change, Warns Olam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/world-faces-food-wars-due-to-geopolitics-and-climate-change-warns-olam\">due to climate change all around the world<\/a>. We need to work together on making sure our societies are better equipped to <a title=\"Africa\u2019s Ape sanctuaries face climate heat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/africas-ape-sanctuaries-face-climate-heat\">face climate<\/a> disasters, by for example investing in climate adaptation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the European Commission presented a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_24_1385\">Communication on Managing Climate Risks<\/a><button class=\"wt-unselected wt-laco wt-laco--button\" title=\"Search for available translations\" type=\"button\" aria-controls=\"laco-modal\"><\/button>, in response to the first ever\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/newsroom\/news\/europe-is-not-prepared-for\">EU Climate Risk Assessment<\/a><button class=\"wt-unselected wt-laco wt-laco--button\" title=\"Search for available translations\" type=\"button\" aria-controls=\"laco-modal\"><\/button>\u00a0from the European Environment Agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 15 July, the European Union holds a solemn ceremony in Brussels to commemorate the victims of the global climate crisis.
