sequestration potential of forests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Forests are invaluable allies in the fight against <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">climate change<\/a>, offering natural solutions to reduce atmospheric CO\u2082 levels. Their preservation and <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">sustainable management are essential to achieving global climate<\/a> goals and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>However, a recent study published in Earth\u2019s Future shows the potential of Western US <a title=\"Extreme wildfires are turning the world\u2019s largest forest ecosystem from carbon sink into net-emitter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/extreme-wildfires-are-turning-the-worlds-largest-forest-ecosystem-from-carbon-sink-into-net-emitter\">forests to continue serving as effective carbon sinks<\/a> in changing environmental conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Jazlynn Hall, a team of <a title=\"Conference: Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conference-tanzania-wildlife-research-institute-tawiri\">researchers from the Cary Institute<\/a> of Ecosystem Studies examined carbon storage trends across the American West from 2005 to 2019. Their findings revealed that rather than strengthening carbon storage, <a title=\"Expert: Climate change adaptation is vital for forest restoration.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/expert-climate-change-adaptation-is-vital-for-forest-restoration\">climate change and wildfires are causing many forests<\/a> to lose more carbon than they store.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon storage<br \/>\n<\/strong>Hall expressed concern over the reliance on forests as a climate solution, noting, \u201cMany climate mitigation pathways rely in part on additional forest carbon storage to keep warming below 1.5 degrees C this century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study used <a title=\"Spatial Data Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/spatial-data-scientist\">data<\/a> from the US Forest Service to assess carbon storage in different ecoregions, spanning from the arid Southwest to the temperate Pacific Northwest. It used methodologies, including machine learning, to pinpoint <a title=\"Factors driving violence in Nigeria\u2019s Kaduna State: Climate Change, Ethnicity, and Neglect\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/factors-driving-violence-in-nigerias-kaduna-state-climate-change-ethnicity-and-neglect\">factors driving changes<\/a> in carbon levels.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caryinstitute.org\/news-insights\/press-release\/forest-carbon-storage-has-declined-across-much-western-us-likely-due\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The results showed that while dead carbon from fallen trees increased, live carbon stored in trees declined significantly across most regions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Park Williams, a co-author and hydroclimatologist at UCLA, highlighted climate and <a title=\"Clearing the ridge: Fire for forest health and resilient communities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/clearing-the-ridge-fire-for-forest-health-and-resilient-communities\">fire<\/a> as primary drivers of these shifts. \u201cOur study develops new methods to carefully estimate forest-carbon <a title=\"Climate Value of Temporary Carbon Storage in Forests\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-value-of-temporary-carbon-storage-in-forests\">storage<\/a> at a regional level, track it over time, and diagnose the causes of changes over time,\u201d he explained, showing the complex interplay of natural and human-induced factors.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings suggest that decades of fire suppression have artificially inflated carbon storage levels in some areas, making them more vulnerable to intense wildfires exacerbated by <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Winslow Hansen, a forest ecologist at Cary Institute, cautioned, \u201cDry forests in the Western US may be acutely vulnerable to carbon loss without strong and immediate investment in proactive <a title=\"Research Assistant Manager (Forester)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-assistant-manager-forester\">forest management<\/a> [such as thinning and prescribed burning].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future forest management<br \/>\n<\/strong>Despite these challenges, the research offers a glimmer of hope. Ecoregions in the Pacific Northwest bucked the declining trend, demonstrating that targeted <a title=\"Oklahoma City Zoo &amp; Botanical Garden: Conservation Grants 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/oklahoma-city-zoo-botanical-garden-conservation-grants-2023\">conservation<\/a> efforts can produce positive outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Hall pointed to ongoing efforts in the region to preserve old-growth forests and expand <a title=\"Rainforest Trust: Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/rainforest-trust-creating-new-protected-areas\">protected areas<\/a> as promising examples.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Hansen emphasised the importance of adaptive <a title=\"Science without Borders Challenge 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-without-borders-challenge-2024\">forest<\/a> management strategies tailored to local conditions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/italian-mountain-forests-face-irreversible-climate-change-transformation\/166175\/\">His Western Fire and Forest Resilience Collaborative aims to monitor carbon dynamics and model future scenarios to inform sustainable practices.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the study shows the need for proactive conservation measures, it also calls for reevaluating <a title=\"Request for Proposal on Analysis of Public Sector Climate, Forest, and Land Use Strategies and Determination of Investment Readiness Score\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/request-for-proposal-on-analysis-of-public-sector-climate-forest-and-land-use-strategies-and-determination-of-investment-readiness-score\">climate mitigation strategies reliant on Western US forests<\/a>.
