{"id":10083,"date":"2024-07-15T21:54:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T18:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=10083"},"modified":"2024-07-15T21:54:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T18:54:00","slug":"climate-change-not-a-problem-at-the-republican-national-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-not-a-problem-at-the-republican-national-convention","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change: Not a problem at the Republican National Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the event opens with a focus on energy, former President Trump and other leaders are calling for more oil, gas and coal development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United States is experiencing scorching new levels of heat fueled by climate change this summer, with dozens of people dying in the West, millions sweating under heat advisories and nearly three-quarters of Americans\u00a0saying the government must prioritize\u00a0global warming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But as the Republican Party opens its national convention in Milwaukee with a prime-time focus on energy on Monday night, the party has no plan to address climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While some Republicans no longer deny the overwhelming scientific consensus that the planet is warming because of <a title=\"Human activities impact wildlife, even in protected areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/human-activities-impact-wildlife-even-in-protected-areas\">human activity<\/a>, party leaders do not see it as a problem that needs to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t know that there is a Republican approach to <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> as an organizing issue,\u201d said Thomas J. Pyle, president of the American <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">Energy<\/a> Alliance, a conservative research group focused on energy. \u201cI don\u2019t think President Trump sees reducing greenhouse gases, using the <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">government<\/a> to do so, as an imperative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When former President Donald J. Trump mentions <a title=\"Burden of climate change on religion and culture\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/burden-of-climate-change-on-religion-and-culture\">climate change<\/a> at all, it is mockingly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCan you imagine, this guy says <a title=\"Balancing global warming mitigation with fiscal responsibility in nations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/balancing-global-warming-mitigation-with-fiscal-responsibility-in-nations\">global warming<\/a> is the greatest threat to our country?\u201d Mr. Trump said, referring to President Biden as he addressed a rally in Chesapeake, Va., last month, the\u00a0hottest June in recorded history\u00a0across the globe. \u201cGlobal warming is fine. In fact, I heard it was going to be very warm today. It\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He went on to dismiss the scientific evidence that melting ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are causing seas to rise, threatening coastal <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe <a title=\"Ocean Reporting Network\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ocean-reporting-network\">ocean<\/a> will rise, maybe, and it may go down, also,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cBut it may rise one eighth of an inch in the next 497 years, they say, one eighth, which gives you a little bit more waterfront property if you\u2019re lucky enough to own.\u201d In fact, sea levels are estimated to rise as much as 33 inches by the end of the century, according to top scientists. And if the Antarctic ice sheet collapses, experts said global sea levels could rise by more than 10 feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the televised debate with Mr. Biden in June, Mr. Trump was asked if he would take any action as president to slow the <a title=\"WWF-T\u00fcrkiye urges protection of biodiversity amid climate crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/wwf-turkiye-urges-protection-of-biodiversity-amid-climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a>. \u201cI want absolutely immaculate clean <a title=\"Researcher \u2013 Integrated Water Modeling and Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-integrated-water-modeling-and-assessment\">water<\/a> and I want absolutely clean air, and we had it,\u201d Mr. Trump responded, without answering the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, later declined to clarify the former president\u2019s position or discuss any actions he would take regarding <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">climate change<\/a>, saying only that he wants \u201cenergy dominance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States last year pumped more crude oil than any country in <a title=\"The Impact of Natural History Museum Decline on Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-impact-of-natural-history-museum-decline-on-biodiversity-conservation\">history and is now the world\u2019s biggest exporter of natural<\/a> gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A clear majority of Americans, 65 percent, wants the country to focus on increasing solar, wind and other renewable energy and not <a title=\"Record Trillion in Fossil Fuel Subsidies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/record-7-trillion-in-fossil-fuel-subsidies\">fossil fuels<\/a>, according to a May survey by the Pew Research Center. But just 38 percent of Republicans surveyed said <a title=\"Call for Project Proposal: Access to Renewable Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-proposal-access-to-renewable-energy\">renewable energy<\/a> should be prioritized, while 61 percent said the country should focus on developing more oil, gas and coal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTheir No. 1 agenda is to continue producing fossil fuels,\u201d said Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric sciences and the director of the Texas Center for <a title=\"Empowering business graduates as climate champions: Lessons from Uganda and Tanzania Universities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/empowering-business-graduates-as-climate-champions-lessons-from-uganda-and-tanzania-universities\">Climate Studies at Texas A&amp;M University<\/a>. \u201cOnce you understand their main goal is to entrench fossil fuels regardless of anything else, everything makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The party platform, issued last week, makes no mention of <a title=\"Deliberative democracy &amp; climate change: New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/deliberative-democracy-climate-change-new-publication\">climate change<\/a>. Instead, it encourages more production of oil, gas and coal, the burning of which is dangerously driving up global temperatures. \u201cWe will DRILL, BABY, DRILL,\u201d it says, referring to oil as \u201cliquid gold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By contrast, Mr. Biden has taken the most aggressive action of any president to cut emissions from coal, oil and gas and encourage a transition to wind, <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">solar and other carbon-free<\/a> energy. He has directed every federal agency from the Agriculture Department to the Pentagon to consider how <a title=\"Climate change affecting rainfall patterns\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-affecting-rainfall-patterns\">climate change is affecting<\/a> their core missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Mr. Biden has taken an all-of-government <a title=\"Simon Stiell to Transform Climate Change and Biodiversity Approach\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/simon-stiell-to-transform-climate-change-and-biodiversity-approach\">approach to fighting climate change<\/a>, Mr. Trump and his allies would adopt the opposite: scrubbing \u201cclimate\u201d from all federal functions and promoting fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump and his allies want to end federal subsidies for electric vehicles, battery <a title=\"United Nations Industrial Development Organisation \u2014 Innovative Solutions towards Net-Zero\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-industrial-development-organisation-innovative-solutions-towards-net-zero\">development and the wind and solar industries<\/a>, preferring instead to open up the Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling, encourage more offshore drilling and expand gas export terminals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Project 2025,\u00a0a lengthy manual filled with specific proposals for a next Republican administration, <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">calls for erasing any mention of climate change<\/a> across the government. While Mr. Trump has recently sought to distance himself from Project 2025, he has praised its architects at the Heritage Foundation, a <a title=\"Let\u2019s honor those who have protected Indiana\u2019s natural places through conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/lets-honor-those-who-have-protected-indianas-natural-places-through-conservation\">conservative<\/a> research organization, and much of the plan was written by people who were top advisers during his first term and could serve in prominent roles if he wins in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When pressed to <a title=\"Forest Farm Producers in Nepal discussed to up-scale the best climate change adaptation practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-farm-producers-in-nepal-discussed-to-up-scale-the-best-climate-change-adaptation-practices\">discuss climate change<\/a>, some Republicans say the country should produce more natural gas and sell it to other countries as a cleaner replacement for coal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While natural gas produces less carbon dioxide than coal when burned, it remains one of the sources of the greenhouse gases that are <a title=\"Factors driving violence in Nigeria\u2019s Kaduna State: Climate Change, Ethnicity, and Neglect\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/factors-driving-violence-in-nigerias-kaduna-state-climate-change-ethnicity-and-neglect\">driving climate change<\/a>. <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">Scientists say<\/a> that countries must stop burning coal, oil and gas to keep global warming to relatively safe levels. Last year, at the <a title=\"United Nations Places Climate \u2018Course Correction\u2019 on the Agenda for COP28 Negotiations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-places-climate-course-correction-on-the-agenda-for-cop28-negotiations\">United Nations climate<\/a> summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the United States and nearly 200 countries agreed to transition away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But if elected, Mr. Trump has indicated he would pull back from the <a title=\"Study finds simple, cheap way to use forests to slow global climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change\">global fight against climate change<\/a>, as he did when he announced in 2017 that the United States would be the first and only country to withdraw from the Paris Agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions. (The United States subsequently rejoined under Mr. Biden.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And it\u2019s possible he would go even further. Mr. Trump\u2019s former aides said that if he wins in November, he would remove the country altogether from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the <a title=\"Call for applications: International Climate Protection Fellowships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-international-climate-protection-fellowships\">international body that works on climate<\/a> policy and created the 2015 Paris deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When it comes to international relations, <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">Project 2025 calls<\/a> for an end to spending federal funds to help the world\u2019s poorest countries transition to wind, solar and other renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The blueprint also <a title=\"Urgent call: States must act now on Climate Change, Food Security, and Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/urgent-call-states-must-act-now-on-climate-change-food-security-and-health\">calls for erasing climate change as a national security<\/a> concern, despite research showing rising sea levels, extreme weather and other consequences of global temperature rise are\u00a0destabilizing areas of the world, affecting migration and threatening American military installations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Federal research into <a title=\"Call for project: Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-climate-change-and-environmental-sustainability\">climate change would slow or disappear under Project<\/a> 2025, which recommends dismantling the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which conducts some of the world\u2019s leading climate research and is also responsible for weather forecasting and tracking the path of hurricanes and other storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">NOAA, according to the authors of Project 2025, is \u201cone of the main drivers of the <a title=\"How China\u2019s dairy industry is addressing climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-chinas-dairy-industry-is-addressing-climate-change\">climate change alarm industry<\/a> and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity.\u201d At the agency\u2019s research operation, which include a network of research laboratories, an undersea research center, and several <a title=\"Indo-Argentina Joint Research Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/indo-argentina-joint-research-program\">joint research<\/a> institutes with universities, \u201cthe preponderance of its climate-change research should be disbanded,\u201d the blueprint said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Project 2025 also calls for the president to issue an executive order to \u201creshape\u201d the program that convenes 13 federal agencies every four years to produce the <a title=\"G7 Urges wealthy developing Nations to pay for climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/g7-urges-wealthy-developing-nations-to-pay-for-climate-change\">National Climate<\/a> Assessment, the country\u2019s most authoritative analysis of climate knowledge. The report is required by Congress and details the <a title=\"Climate change impacts, risks and adaptation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-impacts-risks-and-adaptation\">impacts and risks of climate change<\/a> to a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, health care and transportation. It is used by the <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a>, researchers and officials around the country to inform decisions about strategies and spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Project 2025 also calls for the elimination of <a title=\"Vacancy Announcement: Resource Mobilization\/ Development Officer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacancy-announcement-resource-mobilization-development-officer\">offices at the Department of Energy dedicated to developing<\/a> wind, solar and other renewable energy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-6-wrapper\" class=\"css-17u3id6\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Waleed Abdalati, a former NASA chief <a title=\"Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist\">scientist<\/a> who is now at the University of Colorado Boulder, said downgrading climate science would be a disservice to the nation. \u201cThat\u2019s a <a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">loss of four years<\/a> in pursuit of creative solutions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As president, Mr. Trump tried to replace\u00a0top officials\u00a0with political appointees who denied the existence of <a title=\"From Western expansion to Climate Change: A brief history of water\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/from-western-expansion-to-climate-change-a-brief-history-of-water\">climate change and put pressure on federal scientists to water<\/a> down their conclusions. <a title=\"Scientists grow space seeds to adapt to Earth\u2019s climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientists-grow-space-seeds-to-adapt-to-earths-climate-change\">Scientists refused to change<\/a> their findings and attempts by the Trump administration to bury climate research were also not successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThank God they didn\u2019t know how to run a government,\u201d Thomas Armstrong, who led the <a title=\"NATIONAL SHORT-TERM SOCIO-ECONOMIST CONSULTANT FOR EXTENDING PFP 2 HUMAN RIGHTS AND GENDER SITUATION ASSESSMENT INTO NJOMBE AND MAFINGA CLUSTERS.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/national-short-term-socio-economist-consultant-for-extending-pfp-2-human-rights-and-gender-situation-assessment-into-njombe-and-mafinga-clusters\">National Climate Assessment<\/a> program under the Obama administration,\u00a0said at the end of Mr. Trump\u2019s presidency, adding, \u201cIt could have been a lot worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Next time, they would know how to run the government, Mr. Trump\u2019s former officials said. \u201cThe difference between the last time and this time is, Donald Trump was president for four years,\u201d Mr. Pyle said. \u201cHe will be more prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the event opens with a focus on energy, former President Trump and other leaders are calling for more oil, gas and coal development.
