{"id":10089,"date":"2024-07-15T21:57:24","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T18:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=10089"},"modified":"2024-07-15T21:57:24","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T18:57:24","slug":"projected-climate-risks-to-global-ocean-fish-biomass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/projected-climate-risks-to-global-ocean-fish-biomass","title":{"rendered":"Projected climate risks to global ocean fish biomass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New projections highlight potential climate risks to exploitable fish biomass for nearly all regions of the world&#8217;s ocean, including top producer countries and those with high reliance on aquatic foods, according to a report released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).<\/p>\n<p>Global projections of exploitable fish biomass show declines of more than 10 percent, particularly under the high-emissions scenario, by mid-century for many regions of the world, said the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/handle\/20.500.14283\/cd1379en\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Climate change risks to marine ecosystems and fisheries: Projections to 2100 from the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the century, under the high-emissions scenario, which projects global warming of 3\u20134.0 \u00b0C, declines worsen to 30 percent or greater in 48 countries and territories.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, under the low-emissions scenario, which projects global warming of 1.5\u20132 \u00b0C, changes stabilize between no change and a decrease of 10 percent or less across 178 countries and territories by the end of the century.<\/p>\n<p>Notable declines include those for top fish producer nations, which worsen towards the end of the century under the high-emissions scenario, for example 37.3 percent for Peru&#8217;s and 30.9 percent for <a title=\"China\u2019s Climate Misinformation: Nationalism Fuelling Concerns\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/chinas-climate-misinformation-nationalism-fuelling-concerns\">China&#8217;s<\/a> Exclusive Economic Zones but stabilize under the low-emissions scenario.<\/p>\n<p>The report was produced by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fishmip.org\/\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project\u00a0<\/a>(FishMIP), an international network of researchers working with FAO to understand the long-term impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and fisheries through a set of state-of-the-art numerical models. It was released during the Thirty-sixth session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI36) held between 8 and 12 July 2024 at FAO headquarters in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>The report comes on the heels of the latest edition of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/items\/e126be0d-cafa-43a6-a845-cfae4dc3b6c1\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture<\/a>\u00a0(SOFIA), which showed that world fisheries and aquaculture production hit a new high of 223.2 million tonnes in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reducing hazards to marine <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystems<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the potential impacts of <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> on marine ecosystems and their fisheries, and their associated uncertainties, is crucial to design adaptation programmes at appropriate scales,\u201d said Manuel Barange, FAO Assistant Director-General and Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLower emissions significantly <a title=\"Towards reducing biodiversity loss in fragmented habitats\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/towards-reducing-biodiversity-loss-in-fragmented-habitats\">reduce end-of-century biomass losses<\/a> for nearly all countries and territories compared to the high-emissions scenario. This highlights the benefits of <a title=\"Climate change mitigation: reducing emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-mitigation-reducing-emissions\">climate change mitigation<\/a> measures for fisheries and aquatic foods,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of the losses projected under both scenarios by the end of the century reveals that lowering emissions has marked benefits for nearly all countries and territories.<\/p>\n<p>This includes Small Island Developing States, where people rely heavily on fisheries for food and income and where the ecological and socioeconomic risks posed by <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">climate change<\/a> are highest. For example, among the Pacific Islands States, 68\u201390 percent of the extreme end-of-century losses <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">projected under high emissions<\/a> are averted by the low-emissions scenario for the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Achieving Blue Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report also pointed out that in order to assist countries in achieving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/39ef1d5b-0bee-4c31-9883-1325a44c48a8\/content\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">FAO\u2019s Blue Transformation<\/a>\u00a0vision of more resilient, equitable, and sustainable aquatic food systems, future FishMIP research will need to encompass other ocean and coastal uses in addition to fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>This would obtain a more holistic view of managing marine natural resources in the face of climate change and inform trade-offs across sectors, including adaptive fisheries management and wider agrifood policies, aligned with priorities of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/f6270800-eec7-498f-9887-6d937c4f575a\/content#:~:text=The%20new%20Strategy%20on%20Climate,youth%20and%20Indigenous%20Peoples%2C%20as\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">the FAO Strategy on Climate Change and its Action Plan<\/a>. It would also address linkages with freshwater and terrestrial resource use, for example the reliance of aquaculture on both marine and terrestrial systems, to help support policy directions at the <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">nexus of climate change<\/a>, biodiversity, water and food security, and health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An <a title=\"Australian Center for International Agricultural Research \u2014 Pacific Agriculture Scholarships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/australian-center-for-international-agricultural-research-pacific-agriculture-scholarships\">international network of researchers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FishMIP was officially launched in 2013. It provides knowledge to industry and governments to support effective planning for <a title=\"Expert: Climate change adaptation is vital for forest restoration.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/expert-climate-change-adaptation-is-vital-for-forest-restoration\">adaptive and resilient seafood sectors under climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, FishMIP2.0 was established to increase the reliability of <a title=\"Scientist in flood modelling and satellite EO data assimilation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist-in-flood-modelling-and-satellite-eo-data-assimilation\">modelling<\/a> projections and to answer a broader set of policy-related questions relevant to food security and marine resource management, with climate change remaining the overarching theme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New projections highlight potential climate risks to exploitable fish biomass for nearly all regions of the world&#8217;s ocean, including top producer countries and those with high reliance on aquatic foods, according to a report released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
