Tens of millions of people in Southern Africa are grappling with severe food shortages due to declining crop and livestock production, which has been significantly impacted by erratic weather patterns and prolonged droughts. The situation has left vulnerable communities across multiple countries facing dire consequences, with food security deteriorating at an alarming rate.<\/p>\n<p>Countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique have been <a title=\"Asia hard hit by climate-weather impacts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/asia-hard-hit-by-climate-weather-impacts\">hit particularly hard<\/a>, with agricultural production severely disrupted. Many families are struggling to meet basic food needs as harvests have failed, and <a title=\"Livestock farming worsens climate change, says expert\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/livestock-farming-worsens-climate-change-says-expert\">livestock<\/a> populations have dwindled due to the lack of water and grazing land. The drought has compounded existing challenges in the region, including economic hardships, political instability, and limited access to essential services, pushing millions closer to the brink of disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The SADC has <a title=\"Explore#6 Call For Projects, Support for International Mobility\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/explore6-call-for-projects-support-for-international-mobility\">called for increased international support<\/a> and coordinated regional efforts to address the escalating crisis. The impacts of <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">climate change<\/a> are increasingly evident in Southern Africa, with extreme weather events like droughts becoming more frequent and intense. The region&#8217;s dependence on rain-fed agriculture makes it especially vulnerable to such changes, and the ongoing drought underscores the urgent need for <a title=\"Climate Resilience Challenge Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-resilience-challenge-grants\">climate resilience<\/a> measures and long-term strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on livelihoods and food security.<\/p>\n<p>Elias Magosi, <a title=\"Vacancy Announcement-Executive Secretary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacancy-announcement-executive-secretary\">executive secretary<\/a> of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), said on Saturday that 17 percent of the region\u2019s population \u2013 some 68 million people \u2013 are in need of assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2024 rainy season has been a challenging one with most parts of the <a title=\"Call for Proposals for Effective Inter-Regional Incubator for Youth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-for-effective-inter-regional-incubator-for-youth\">region experiencing negative effects<\/a> of the El Nino phenomenon characterised by the late onset of rains,\u201d Magosi said.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks come as the heads of state of the 16-nation SADC were meeting in Zimbabwe\u2019s capital of Harare to discuss regional issues, including <a title=\"Urgent call: States must act now on Climate Change, Food Security, and Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/urgent-call-states-must-act-now-on-climate-change-food-security-and-health\">food security<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia are among the countries in Southern Africa\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2024\/7\/9\/meals-dry-up-as-zimbabwes-drought-sets-in\">most affected by malnutrition<\/a>\u00a0caused by the drought, which began in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from Harare on Saturday, Al Jazeera\u2019s Haru Mutasa said the SADC nation leaders were likely to be discussing how to get more <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">funding<\/a> and food aid to affected countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrops are dying, it\u2019s a huge problem,\u201d Mutasa said.<\/p>\n<p>In early June, the United Nations World Food Programme\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/urgent-call-action-address-historic-el-nino-drought-southern-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a>\u00a0the dire effects of the drought, particularly on communities already vulnerable to food shortages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRural <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a> we have met on the ground tell us they have never seen anything like this. They are extremely worried about their future,\u201d said Reena Ghelani, the UN <a title=\"WWF-T\u00fcrkiye urges protection of biodiversity amid climate crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/wwf-turkiye-urges-protection-of-biodiversity-amid-climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a> coordinator for the El Nino response.<\/p>\n<p>Southern <a title=\"How to finance Africa\u2019s future economic development\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-to-finance-africas-future-economic-development\">Africa<\/a> saw its driest February in 100 years, the UN said, receiving only 20 percent of the usual rainfall. Temperatures were also several degrees above average.<\/p>\n<p>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/7\/25\/un-chief-calls-for-action-to-stem-extreme-heat-epidemic\">said late last month<\/a>\u00a0that extreme heat fuelled by the climate crisis was \u201cincreasingly tearing through economies, widening inequalities, undermining the Sustainable Development Goals, and killing people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what is driving it: fossil fuel-charged, human-induced <a title=\"To get Americans to care about Climate Change, just call It Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/to-get-americans-to-care-about-climate-change-just-call-it-climate-change\">climate change<\/a>.
