PURPOSE OF THE WORK<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Undertake a mapping of the various media (institutions and outlets) that exist in Anglophone and Francophone Africa and to assess their capacity needs in reporting forestry and related issues, then develop a guide for scientific reporting on biodiversity, climate change, landscape and forest management as well as renewable energy, for media professionals.<br \/>\n<strong><u>2. SPECIFIC TASKS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The specific tasks for the media mapping assignment could usefully address the following topics and questions, which are indicative and not exhaustive.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The state of the science media <a title=\"PhD study: Foraging in the landscape\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-study-foraging-in-the-landscape\">landscape<\/a> in Africa<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct a desk study\/literature review and <a title=\"Call for applications for field surveyors for household survey &amp; key informant interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-for-field-surveyors-for-household-survey-key-informant-interview\">informant interviews with key<\/a> players in the media industry to describe the science media landscape in the respective regions.\n<ul>\n<li>What are the main channels used for disseminating science news? How has the <a title=\"Women in Climate Change Science\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/women-in-climate-change-science\">science media landscape changed<\/a> over the past decade? What are the latest developments, trends and regulations that have affected the science media and journalism practice in <a title=\"How to finance Africa\u2019s future economic development\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-to-finance-africas-future-economic-development\">Africa<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Who are the main science media actors? Who are the new\/emerging players in the sector versus long standing media and what do they bring to the table?<\/li>\n<li>In Africa there are environmental media networks linking smaller media organisations and or individual journalists (for example Pan African Media Alliance for <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">Climate Change<\/a> , PAMACC). Identify the main media networks and their focal points.<\/li>\n<li>Provide profiles of the key media development actors\/donors (e.g. Japan International Cooperation Agency- JICA, <a title=\"European Commission \u2014 Awareness Raising in Renewable Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-commission-awareness-raising-in-renewable-energy\">European Commission<\/a>, Bloomberg Philanthropies) &amp; an insight into their strategic focus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Challenges for journalists reporting on <\/strong><a title=\"Forests vital for climate action plan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forests-vital-for-climate-action-plan\">forests in the context of a changing climate<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on either an online survey from existing databases, <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Young Researchers Award 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-young-researchers-award-2023\">informant interviews and\/or dip-stick research<\/a>:\n<ul>\n<li>Describe the challenges and prospects facing the science media industry in the region.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the <a title=\"Call for national experts: strengthening capacity among African forestry stakeholders for implementing REDD+ in Anglophone and Lusophone Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-national-experts-strengthening-capacity-among-african-forestry-stakeholders-for-implementing-redd-in-anglophone-and-lusophone-africa\">capacity needs of science journalists in reporting on forestry<\/a> and related issues.<\/li>\n<li>Explain the mechanisms required for increasing access to accurate, objective information and facilitating informed <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a> discourse on critical forestry related issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Bridging the knowledge gap on <a title=\"Science without Borders Challenge 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-without-borders-challenge-2024\">forest related issues among science<\/a> journalists<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on the findings of the capacity needs assessment above, develop a guide for scientific reporting on forest related issues including <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">biodiversity<\/a>, climate change, landscape and forest management as well as renewable energy, including best practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>3. DURATION<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tasks in these TORs are for a one-and-a-half-month workload.<br \/>\n<strong><u>4. EXPECTED DELIVERY<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The selected experts are expected to submit the following deliverables:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 media mapping reports (Anglophone and Francophone Africa respectively)<\/li>\n<li>A guideline document on scientific reporting on <a title=\"Vacancy Announcement: Resource Mobilization\/ Development Officer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacancy-announcement-resource-mobilization-development-officer\">African forestry<\/a> for media professionals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This consultancy is meant for media experts demonstrating the following education and skills.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have, at least, ten years of proven experience in working within the media sector, preferably at senior editorial level within the newsroom.<\/li>\n<li>A Master of Arts degree in Journalism or Communication<\/li>\n<li>Ability to write clearly and concisely showcased through media articles, magazines and publications.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrable experiences <a title=\"Stanford Law School Policy Lab and Bezos Earth Fund report recommends climate-smart forestry practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stanford-law-school-policy-lab-and-bezos-earth-fund-report-recommends-climate-smart-forestry-practices\">reporting on scientific issues in general and forestry<\/a> related matters, in particular.<\/li>\n<li>Membership to a local public relations\/media association would be an added advantage.<\/li>\n<li>Have demonstrated research and analytical skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>6.
