This achievement not only surpasses the previous peak set in 2013 but also reflects a significant recovery and growth trajectory despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The tripling of trade volumes observed over the past decade underscores a positive trend in regional economic integration and market expansion. However, this surge presents both opportunities and challenges that need to be addressed to sustain and enhance the growth of intra-African agricultural trade.<\/p>\n<p>The report emphasizes that while the recent growth is commendable, it is crucial to build on this momentum by bolstering policy and infrastructure support. This includes enhancing trade <a title=\"Online Regional Facilitator Needed: Community of Practice on \u201cSustainable Solutions for REDD+ Result-Based Payments in Africa\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/online-regional-facilitator-needed-community-of-practice-on-sustainable-solutions-for-redd-result-based-payments-in-africa\">facilitation measures and investing in regional<\/a> infrastructure to reduce trade barriers and transaction costs. Improving logistics, streamlining customs procedures, and investing in transportation networks are essential steps to further accelerate trade and ensure that the benefits are evenly distributed <a title=\"Prof. Munishi from DEC joins Global effort to identify and name common Tropical trees across three Continents\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prof-munishi-from-dec-joins-global-effort-to-identify-and-name-common-tropical-trees-across-three-continents\">across the continent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to addressing trade facilitation, the report underscores the need for sustainable practices to <a title=\"Climate change mitigation: reducing emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-mitigation-reducing-emissions\">mitigate the pressure points of climate change<\/a>, water use, and carbon emissions. These factors are increasingly influencing <a title=\"Agriculture\u2019s impact on climate and biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agricultures-impact-on-climate-and-biodiversity\">agricultural<\/a> productivity and trade dynamics. <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">Climate change<\/a> poses risks to crop yields and farming conditions, while water scarcity affects irrigation and overall agricultural sustainability. Moreover, carbon <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">emissions<\/a> from agricultural practices contribute to global warming, exacerbating environmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>To address these issues, the AATM recommends adopting sustainable agricultural practices that promote resilience to <a title=\"From Western expansion to Climate Change: A brief history of water\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/from-western-expansion-to-climate-change-a-brief-history-of-water\">climate change and efficient water<\/a> use. This includes encouraging the use of climate-smart agriculture, improving <a title=\"Postdoctoral Fellow: Geospatial Tools for Water Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/postdoctoral-fellow-geospatial-tools-for-water-management\">water management<\/a> techniques, and reducing carbon footprints through innovative technologies and practices. Policy frameworks should integrate environmental considerations with trade policies to support sustainable development and ensure that agricultural trade contributes positively to both economic growth and environmental <a title=\"Let\u2019s honor those who have protected Indiana\u2019s natural places through conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/lets-honor-those-who-have-protected-indianas-natural-places-through-conservation\">conservation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By aligning trade policies with sustainability goals and investing in the necessary infrastructure and support systems, Africa can harness the potential of its agricultural sector while addressing the critical <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">challenges posed by climate change<\/a>, water scarcity, and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Published by AKADEMIYA2063 and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the 2024 AATM explores the complex links between trade and <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, analyzing carbon emissions associated with the production and transportation of agricultural products, embedded water content in traded agricultural products, and climate stress-induced yield changes in agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s report also examines how trade can mitigate the environmental <a title=\"Human activities impact wildlife, even in protected areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/human-activities-impact-wildlife-even-in-protected-areas\">impacts of economic activities<\/a>. The authors <a title=\"2024 Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program Applications Open\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2024-jacobs-foundation-research-fellowship-program-applications-open\">call<\/a> for policies to leverage trade in climate adaptation efforts, notably through strategic use of countries\u2019 comparative advantages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgriculture is the main channel through which <a title=\"Climate change disrupts NATO operations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-disrupts-nato-operations\">climate change disrupts<\/a> African economies, but it is also the sector with the biggest potential to lead adaptation to climate change,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Dr.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Ousmane Badiane<\/strong>, Executive Chairperson at AKADEMIYA2063.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs shown by the latest AATM, there are numerous opportunities for win-win <a title=\"CBD Events Discuss Inclusive Wealth, Nature-based Climate Solutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/cbd-events-discuss-inclusive-wealth-nature-based-climate-solutions\">solutions in climate<\/a> adaptation and mitigation within the agricultural sector. The report highlights areas for policy interventions to facilitate intra-African trade, drive <a title=\"Shifting Special Drawing Rights for Climate Action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/shifting-special-drawing-rights-for-climate-action\">climate action<\/a>, and enhance the efficient use of natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Launched during a hybrid event held in Kigali,\u00a0\u00a0the report examines the recent performance of <a title=\"Call for proposal: Agro-ecological Approaches in African Agriculture Systems\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposal-agro-ecological-approaches-in-african-agriculture-systems\">African agricultural<\/a> trade with a focus on the complex relationships between trade, climate change, and food security, addressing the following\u00a0key issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carbon emissions: Today, African imports and exports account for a minimal percentage of overall global greenhouse gas (GHG) <a title=\"Capacity Building for Emissions Trading and Strengthened MRV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/event\/capacity-building-for-emissions-trading-and-strengthened-mrv\">emissions embodied in global agricultural trade<\/a>, at only 2.3 and 2.5 percent, respectively. However, as Africa has been experiencing the third-fastest growth in agricultural exports (after the Americas and Asia) and the second-fastest growth in imports (after Asia) between 2018 and 2022, investing in emissions-saving innovations will become increasingly important.<\/li>\n<li>Virtual <a title=\"Researcher \u2013 Integrated Water Modeling and Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-integrated-water-modeling-and-assessment\">water<\/a>: More intra-African trade could help countries reduce the impact of localized water scarcity by facilitating imports from relatively more water-abundant countries of more water-intensive crops, such as maize, millet, guava, mangoes, beans, and peppers. Relatively water-constrained countries can then focus more on less water-intensive yet nutritionally essential foods such as <a title=\"Ecological Research Confirms the Dominant Influence of Climate on Vegetation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ecological-research-confirms-the-dominant-influence-of-climate-on-vegetation\">vegetables<\/a>. This trade in \u201cvirtual water\u201d, or the water content embedded in traded agricultural products, should be complemented with infrastructure investments to improve irrigation systems and water management practices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate vulnerability<\/strong>: Africa\u2019s comparative advantage in agriculture will be severely <a title=\"Climate change affecting rainfall patterns\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-affecting-rainfall-patterns\">affected by climate change<\/a>, including rising temperatures, increased frequency of extreme events (particularly droughts), plant pests and diseases, and reduced labor productivity. Notably, most agricultural products traded or consumed in Africa appear to be at risk, especially leguminous vegetables, edible nuts, and oilseeds, vegetables, and some fruits, such as apples and bananas. Smart use of countries\u2019 comparative advantages by shifting production from environmentally resource-scarce countries to resource-abundant areas can contribute to <a title=\"Expert: Climate change adaptation is vital for forest restoration.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/expert-climate-change-adaptation-is-vital-for-forest-restoration\">climate change adaptation<\/a> and mitigation efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cStepping up the integration of African <a title=\"Yunus Environment Hub \u2014 Sustainable Food Systems in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/yunus-environment-hub-sustainable-food-systems-in-east-africa\">food systems<\/a> through enhanced trade ties can help the continent address some increasingly complex challenges,\u201d states\u00a0<strong>Dr. Johan Swinnen<\/strong>, Director General of IFPRI. \u201cIn a <a title=\"Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/seeding-the-future-global-food-system-challenge\">global context marked by more frequent food system<\/a> shocks and the resurgence of export restrictions, this year\u2019s AATM calls for greater resilience via enhanced agricultural trade integration. These recommendations are timely, given the <a title=\"African Development Bank funds climate resilience in Nigeria\u2019s Yobe State\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/african-development-bank-funds-climate-resilience-in-nigerias-yobe-state\">development of the African<\/a> Union\u2019s Post-Malabo Agenda, and should be considered as the\u00a0 African Continental Free Trade Area enters its fifth year in operation.<\/p>\n<p>Additional recommendations from the authors call for <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">governments<\/a> to accelerate regional integration and increase investment in infrastructure. Key <a title=\"Value chain development for selected forest-based products to enhance community livelihoods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/value-chain-development-for-selected-forest-based-products-to-enhance-community-livelihoods\">value chains<\/a> should be strengthened in terms of processing capabilities and technologies, as well as improved capacities and logistics, facilitating producers\u2019 adherence to international standards.
