In reality, Lambwe Valley has become a challenging environment, especially during certain months of the year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Unpredictable weather patterns have made life increasingly difficult for residents. Unlike in the past, when rain patterns were reliable, <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">climate change<\/a> has brought erratic weather, disrupting the agricultural rhythm that sustains the local economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Maxwell Ochoo, a resident of the area, says the increasingly unpredictable <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate<\/a> has made farming\u2014Lambwe Valley\u2019s primary economic activity\u2014a gamble. &#8220;We\u2019ve had several seasons where crops failed after planting because no one knows when the rains will come,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-page-ad_wrap desktop\" data-role=\"ad-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"desktop-article-ad-1\" class=\"content-page-ad content-page-ad_desktop\" data-google-query-id=\"CKjkvIzx54gDFbleHQkdR0IBRw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1010816\/Z-DN-728x90-Article-1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Crop failures are becoming more frequent as <a title=\"Enhancement of local farmers\u2019 adaptive capacity to climate stresses, livelihoods and biodiversity conservation through introduction of proven mushroom cultivation and preservation technologies in villages adjacent to Kilombero nature reserve in Kilomber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/enhancement-of-local-farmers-adaptive-capacity-to-climate-stresses-livelihoods-and-biodiversity-conservation-through-introduction-of-proven-mushroom-cultivation-and-preservation-technologies-in-villag\">farmers struggle to time their cultivation<\/a>. During dry periods, the grass withers, animals grow thin, and residents are forced to rely on <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">government<\/a> assistance for relief food. Even wildlife in Ruma National Park suffers from <a title=\"Nearly 68 Million affected by Southern Africa drought\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/nearly-68-million-affected-by-southern-africa-drought\">drought<\/a>, which threatens the entire ecosystem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Joseph Gathua, a Natural Resource Management <a title=\"Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist\">Scientist<\/a> with the Ministry of Wildlife, emphasises the toll climate change is taking on wildlife. \u201cDrought is a major threat to wildlife in Ruma and other parks across the country,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>These droughts are often followed by periods of heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods that damage property and disrupt livelihoods. No one in Lambwe is prepared for either extreme\u2014whether it\u2019s <a title=\"Researcher \u2013 Integrated Water Modeling and Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-integrated-water-modeling-and-assessment\">water<\/a> scarcity or excess rain that causes floods and crop loss,&#8221; Ochoo explains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The region\u2019s challenges are compounded by deforestation. Lambwe Forest, one of Homa Bay\u2019s key water catchment areas, is under threat from illegal logging and <a title=\"The potential and optimal strategies for charcoal sub-sector development in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-potential-and-optimal-strategies-for-charcoal-sub-sector-development-in-tanzania\">charcoal<\/a> production. According to Ochoo, despite local efforts to <a title=\"Is tree planting truly effective in combating climate change?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/is-tree-planting-truly-effective-in-combating-climate-change\">plant tree<\/a> seedlings, deforestation persists due to insufficient intervention from authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Lambwe <a title=\"Invasive moths, beetles putting local forests at risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invasive-moths-beetles-putting-local-forests-at-risk\">Forest<\/a> has one of the highest rates of deforestation in Homa Bay, and officials from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) are doing little to save it,&#8221; Ochoo laments. Cases of forest fires have also been reported, further complicating efforts to <a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\">protect<\/a> the forest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Sharon Cheluget, Homa Bay County <a title=\"Ways forest conservation can benefit local communities and wildlife\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ways-forest-conservation-can-benefit-local-communities-and-wildlife\">Forest Conservator<\/a>, says residents need to plant at least 15 million trees annually to enhance forest cover and combat environmental degradation. &#8220;We are patrolling water catchment areas to deter illegal logging, and we\u2019ve arrested several individuals involved,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The effects of deforestation extend beyond Lambwe Valley, \u00a0impacting crop yields and contributing to food scarcity throughout Homa Bay County. Farmers report stunted crops, a clear sign of growing <a title=\"Climate change threatens public health and increases foodborne diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-threatens-public-health-and-increases-foodborne-diseases\">food<\/a> insecurity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The challenges this place faces are a microcosm of the broader global <a title=\"WWF-T\u00fcrkiye urges protection of biodiversity amid climate crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/wwf-turkiye-urges-protection-of-biodiversity-amid-climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a>. A recent report revealed that <a title=\"2023: Warmest Year on Record\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2023-warmest-year-on-record\">2023 recorded<\/a> the highest temperatures since 1850, reaching 1.18\u00b0C above the 20th-century average.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Climatologist Clifford Omondi warns that <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> will continue to intensify, leading to biodiversity loss, pollution, and global instability. Thousands of <a title=\"What we owe our trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/what-we-owe-our-trees\">tree<\/a> species are facing extinction, and over two billion people are at risk,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Omondi points out that Africa, while contributing the least to global carbon emissions, bears the brunt of <a title=\"Restoring and Mitigating Climate Change Effects on Forest Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-and-mitigating-climate-change-effects-on-forest-biodiversity\">climate change\u2019s adverse effects<\/a>. In particular, rising temperatures exacerbate human-wildlife conflict as herbivores leave parks in search of food.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p><a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">&#8220;Climate change<\/a> can lead to conflicts over resources, displacement, and increased risks to human life,&#8221; Omondi explains. He calls for a <a title=\"Conservation study of people\u2019s park complex may affect collective sale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-study-of-peoples-park-complex-may-affect-collective-sale\">collective effort to reverse the climate crisis through conservation<\/a> and sustainable practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Some of these issues will be discussed at the <a title=\"United Nations Places Climate \u2018Course Correction\u2019 on the Agenda for COP28 Negotiations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-places-climate-course-correction-on-the-agenda-for-cop28-negotiations\">United Nations Climate<\/a> Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan in November. Omondi <a title=\"UN Chief urges urgent global action on Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-chief-urges-urgent-global-action-on-climate-change\">urges global leaders to implement past climate<\/a> agreements, including the Montreal, Paris, Rio, and Kyoto protocols.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>In Kenya, the demand for <a title=\"Land Innovation Fund \u2014 Deforestation-free Agriculture\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/land-innovation-fund-deforestation-free-agriculture\">land for farming and settlement is driving deforestation<\/a>, even in private forests. Experts like Lovina Onyango from Consumer Unity &amp; Trust Society (CUTS) <a title=\"Agroforestry Group to Attend International Agarwood Conference ISSA 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agroforestry-group-to-attend-international-agarwood-conference-issa-2023\">International argue that educating farmers on agroforestry<\/a> practices is essential to mitigating these effects. Farmers should integrate <a title=\"SUA Granted 10,000 Hectares for Tree Farming and Training in Madaba\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/sua-granted-10000-hectares-for-tree-farming-and-training-in-madaba\">trees into their farms<\/a> instead of clearing them entirely.
