But like the journalism sector as a whole, environmental reporting has been affected by shifting business models that have reduced the availability of resources for reporting, shrinking press freedoms in many countries and a lack of early-stage career opportunities. These issues are especially acute in places that bear the brunt of climate change, biodiversity loss, the destruction of nature and threats against Indigenous peoples and local communities.<\/p>\n<p>In response to this situation, Mongabay has established the Y. Eva Tan <a title=\"Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-reporting-fellowship-program\">Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program<\/a>. The program will provide opportunities for journalists from <a title=\"Biodiversity on a Changing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-on-a-changing-planet\">biodiversity<\/a> hotspots in tropical countries to report on critical environmental issues, gaining valuable training, experience, and credibility that will help them advance their careers in journalism and communications. Ultimately, we aim for fellows to <a title=\"Prof. Munishi from DEC joins Global effort to identify and name common Tropical trees across three Continents\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prof-munishi-from-dec-joins-global-effort-to-identify-and-name-common-tropical-trees-across-three-continents\">join our growing global<\/a> network as regular Mongabay contributors. Eva Tan <a title=\"Conservation study of people\u2019s park complex may affect collective sale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-study-of-peoples-park-complex-may-affect-collective-sale\">Conservation<\/a> Reporting Fellowship Program builds on Mongabay\u2019s long-running internship program, which has helped bolster the capacity of environmental journalists in a field where such experience can be hard to acquire. Since 2008, the <a title=\"Women in the Field skills based training program \u2013 call for participants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/women-in-the-field-skills-based-training-program-call-for-participants\">program has provided training<\/a> and first-hand reporting experience for dozens of budding journalists in more than a dozen countries. Mongabay interns have gone on to establish careers as professional journalists, <a title=\"Science Communication Course\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-communication-course\">communications professionals at scientific institutions and conservation<\/a> NGOs, and at Mongabay itself.<\/p>\n<p>The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program will support up to 12 fellows per year \u2014 six at our global English bureau and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mongabay.org\/oportunidades\/oportunidades-beca-y-eva-tan-de-periodismo-ambiental\/\">six at our Spanish-language bureau<\/a>, Mongabay-Latam.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows will gain valuable experience working with a range of editors at our international news outlet, develop their environmental <a title=\"Kids\u2019 Right to Clean Environment \u2013 Report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/kids-right-to-clean-environment-report\">reporting<\/a> skills, and create a portfolio of original publications that should help them advance their careers in journalism.<\/p>\n<p><b>About Y. Eva Tan<br \/>\n<\/b>Eva is passionate about equality for all human beings, and conservation of natural habitats, not only fauna but also flora. She is particularly sensitive to creating opportunities for all, irrespective of national origin, ethnicity and ability.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5538168\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mongabay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rhett_rfi_interview180.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5538168\" src=\"https:\/\/mongabay.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rhett_rfi_interview180.jpeg\" alt=\"A Malagasy journalist conducting an interview in Madagascar.\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1350\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Malagasy journalist conducting an interview in Madagascar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Logistics<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2025, Mongabay\u2019s global English bureau and Latam Spanish-language bureau will each host one six-month cohort. Each cohort will have six fellows.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 English-language fellowship will run May 1 through October 31. We will accept applications from December 15 through January 19.<\/p>\n<p>Please\u00a0<strong>check back soon<\/strong>\u00a0for details on the 2025 Spanish-language <a title=\"2024 Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program Applications Open\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2024-jacobs-foundation-research-fellowship-program-applications-open\">program and application<\/a> dates.<\/p>\n<p>Each fellow will receive $500 USD a month for the duration of the six-month fellowship, or $3,000 USD in total. During that time, fellows will work directly with the fellowship editor to produce six stories. <a title=\"Employment Opportunity: Research fellow trainee (plant genetics and biotechnology)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/employment-opportunity-research-fellow-trainee-plant-genetics-and-biotechnology\">Fellows will have opportunities<\/a> to collaborate with multiple Mongabay editors, including those who specialize in different areas.<\/p>\n<p>Each fellow is expected to commit to engaging 10 hours a week. Each fellow is expected to produce an <a title=\"Climate change makes average months feel colder\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-makes-average-months-feel-colder\">average of one story per month<\/a> over the course of the fellowship to be published on Mongabay\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Work is remote <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Capacity Enhancement Support Program 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-capacity-enhancement-support-program-2022\">\u2014 Mongabay does not have an office and cannot support<\/a> work visas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"section-2\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Applicants must be from a low- to upper-middle income <a title=\"New publication: Allometric models for liana aboveground biomass in old-growth and secondary tropical forests of Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-allometric-models-for-liana-aboveground-biomass-in-old-growth-and-secondary-tropical-forests-of-tanzania\">tropical<\/a> country<\/strong>, as classified by the World Bank. \u201cHigh-income\u201d tropical countries, such as Singapore and Australia, are excluded from the fellowship.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1WfpqBfy96hBG9Rqnl_Al5rInkMBl2L1RxYzi1ugr_tU\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A list of eligible countries can be found here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applicants must be aspiring, early-career environmental journalists.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Applicants must be able to work remotely and commit to 10 hours per week.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>There is no education requirement<\/strong>\u00a0to <a title=\"Researcher in Applied Entomology in Fruit Trees for the Sustainable Plant Protection Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-in-applied-entomology-in-fruit-trees-for-the-sustainable-plant-protection-program\">apply for the program<\/a>. The fellowship is not linked to any <a title=\"Empowering business graduates as climate champions: Lessons from Uganda and Tanzania Universities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/empowering-business-graduates-as-climate-champions-lessons-from-uganda-and-tanzania-universities\">university<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All application materials must be submitted in the appropriate <\/strong><a title=\"University english language placement examination\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/university-english-language-placement-examination\">language\u00a0(English<\/a> for the English-language program and Spanish for the Spanish-language program).<\/li>\n<li><strong>All materials must adhere to the guidelines below and on the application form<\/strong>; applications that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are currently only accepting fellows for our global English- and Spanish-language bureaus. Our ambition is to eventually expand this program into other Mongabay bureaus, including Indonesia, India, Brazil and French-speaking <a title=\"New publication: Allometric models for liana aboveground biomass in old-growth and secondary tropical forests of Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-allometric-models-for-liana-aboveground-biomass-in-old-growth-and-secondary-tropical-forests-of-tanzania\">tropical<\/a> countries, but we don\u2019t currently have a timeline for this expansion.<\/p>\n<p><b>Desired Experience &amp; Qualifications \/ Judging Criteria<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic understanding of and interest in <a title=\"Climate Home News Seeks Africa-Based Energy Transition Reporter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-home-news-seeks-africa-based-energy-transition-reporter\">reporting and writing news<\/a> stories;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated interest in <a title=\"Oklahoma City Zoo &amp; Botanical Garden: Conservation Grants 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/oklahoma-city-zoo-botanical-garden-conservation-grants-2023\">conservation<\/a> issues;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated interest in environmental journalism as a career;<\/li>\n<li>Proven communication skills;<\/li>\n<li>Capacity to fulfill all of the fellowship requirements and reporting plans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"section-3\"><strong>Application Requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>In addition, Mongabay offers a French-language fellowship in Africa and Spanish-language fellowship in Latin America.
