Tropical trees have evolved various mechanisms to overcome the inherent soil infertility, such as the symbiosis and interactions with soil microorganisms. Key mechanisms of this interplay are not yet accounted for in global models, and the response of <a title=\"Why Tropical Forests Are Important for Our Well-Being\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/why-tropical-forests-are-important-for-our-well-being\">tropical forests<\/a> to unprecedented climatological conditions remains thus uncertain. This <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">project<\/a> sets out to utilize field and experimental knowledge from state-of-the-art monitoring programs and forest manipulation experiments in the Amazon rainforest to improve representations of tropical forests in land surface models to inform on effective adaption and mitigation measures.<\/p>\n<p>You will develop novel formulations of plant-soil interactions that integrate trait-based processes of belowground <a title=\"Ecological Research Confirms the Dominant Influence of Climate on Vegetation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ecological-research-confirms-the-dominant-influence-of-climate-on-vegetation\">ecology into vegetation<\/a> models, with a focus on carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles in tropical forest ecosystems. Your code developments, model evaluations, and applications will focus on the multifunctionality of plant roots and their response to <a title=\"Study finds simple, cheap way to use forests to slow global climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change\">global change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During your 4-year-long PhD, you will dive into the details of plant physiology, root and fungi ecology, soil organic matter dynamics, <a title=\"FBE 604 Aquatic Ecosystems and Stream Ecology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbe-604-aquatic-ecosystems-and-stream-ecology\">ecosystem ecology<\/a>, community ecology, and climate change. You will engage with various aspects of trait-based modelling, Earth <a title=\"Breaking systemic barriers to women\u2019s participation in science\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/breaking-systemic-barriers-to-women-s-participation-in-science\">System science<\/a>, biogeochemistry, and atmosphere-biosphere interactions. You will be supervised by Dr. Katrin Fleischer and Dr. Sebastiaan Luyssaert.
