href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/2024-track-be-hottest-year-record-warming-temporarily-hits-15degc\">The year 2024 is set to be the warmest on record<\/a>, capping a decade of unprecedented heat fuelled by human activities, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Greenhouse gas levels continue to grow to record observed highs, locking in even more heat for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I can officially report that we have just endured a decade of deadly heat. The top ten hottest <a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">years on record have happened in the last<\/a> ten years, including 2024,\u201d said UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres in his New Year message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate<\/a> breakdown \u2014 in real time. We must exit this road to ruin \u2014 and we have no time to lose. In 2025, countries must put the world on a safer path by dramatically slashing <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">emissions<\/a>, and supporting the transition to a renewable future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>WMO will publish the consolidated global temperature figure for 2024 in January and its full <a title=\"Factors driving violence in Nigeria\u2019s Kaduna State: Climate Change, Ethnicity, and Neglect\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/factors-driving-violence-in-nigerias-kaduna-state-climate-change-ethnicity-and-neglect\">State of the Global Climate<\/a> 2024 report in March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my first year as <a title=\"Asia hard hit by climate-weather impacts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/asia-hard-hit-by-climate-weather-impacts\">WMO<\/a> Secretary-General, I have issued repeated Red Alerts about the state of the climate,\u201d said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo. \u201cWMO marks its 75th anniversary in 2025 and our message will be that if we want a safer planet, we <a title=\"Urgent call: States must act now on Climate Change, Food Security, and Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/urgent-call-states-must-act-now-on-climate-change-food-security-and-health\">must act<\/a> now. It\u2019s our responsibility. It\u2019s a common responsibility, a global responsibility,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery fraction of a degree of warming matters, and increases climate extremes, <a title=\"Climate change impacts, risks and adaptation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-impacts-risks-and-adaptation\">impacts and risks<\/a>. Temperatures are only part of the picture. <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">Climate change<\/a> plays out before our eyes on an almost daily basis in the form of increased occurrence and impact of extreme weather events,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year we saw record-breaking rainfall and flooding events and terrible loss of life in so many countries, causing heartbreak to <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a> on every continent. Tropical \u00a0cyclones caused a terrible human and \u00a0economic toll, most recently in the French overseas department of Mayotte in the Indian <a title=\"Ocean Reporting Network\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ocean-reporting-network\">Ocean<\/a>. Intense heat scorched dozens of countries, with temperatures topping 50 \u00b0C on a number of occasions. Wildfires wreaked devastation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The increasingly extreme weather underlines the urgency of the\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/earlywarningsforall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">Early Warnings for All initiative<\/a>, which along with supporting climate service development and delivery, is a key part of WMO\u2019s activities \u00a0to support climate adaptation. On the climate mitigation front, WMO is rolling out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/g3w.wmo.int\/site\/global-greenhouse-gas-watch-g3w\">Global Greenhouse Gas Watch initiative<\/a>, and supporting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and COP.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, there will be a strong focus on the cryosphere &#8211; the frozen parts of the \u00a0Earth including sea ice, ice sheets, frozen ground \u2013 as it is the\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un-glaciers.org\/en\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">International Year of Glaciers\u2019 Preservation<\/a>, faciliated by UNESCO and WMO.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout 2024, a series of reports from the WMO community \u00a0highlighted the rapid pace of <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> and its far-reaching impacts on every aspect of sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Studying Climate Change through Game\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/studying-climate-change-through-game\">Climate<\/a> change intensified 26 of the 29 weather events studied by World Weather Attribution that killed at least 3700 people and displaced millions, according to a new report from World Weather Attribution and Climate Central.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that climate change added 41 days of dangerous heat in 2024, harming human health and ecosystems, according to the report entitled\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/when-risks-become-reality-extreme-weather-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">When Risks Become Reality: Extreme Weather In 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As global temperatures rise and extreme <a title=\"2023 Heat Events Break Records, Not Rare Anymore\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2023-heat-events-break-records-not-rare-anymore\">heat events<\/a> become more frequent and severe, there is a growing need for enhanced international cooperation to address extreme heat risks. A targeted group of experts representing 15 international organizations, 12 countries, and several leading <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> and NGO partners convened at WMO headquarters from 17-19 December to advance a coordinated framework for tackling the growing threat of extreme heat. This is in response to the UN Secretary-General&#8217;s <a title=\"CFPs: ProBioDev Program to support Projects focused on Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/cfps-probiodev-program-to-support-projects-focused-on-biodiversity-conservation\">Call<\/a> to Action on extreme heat.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of many initiatives by the WMO community to safeguard public <a title=\"Climate change creates health risks for 70% of global workers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-creates-health-risks-for-70-of-global-workers\">health through improved climate<\/a> services and early warnings. As it marks its 75th anniversary in 2025, WMO will continue to coordinate worldwide efforts to observe and monitor the state of the climate, support international efforts to mitigate and <a title=\"Adaptation to Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/adaptation-to-climate-change\">adapt to climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate change impacts gripped the globe in 2024, with cascading impacts from mountain peaks to ocean depths and on communities, economies and the environment.
