In 2025, the Challenge will award a total of \u20ac20 thousand for advancements in open science that feature tools and techniques that improve the access, usefulness, and quality of open biodiversity data. The Challenge is open worldwide to individuals, teams of individuals, companies and their employees, and governmental agencies and their employees. The closing date for submissions is 07 September 2025.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/news\/7cNvqaLzeSyQrLOulk4L5S\/2025-ebbe-nielsen-challenge-seeks-innovations-for-open-biodiversity-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ebbe Nielsen Challenge<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/ebbe\">Ebbe Nielsen Challenge<\/a>\u00a0has opened its 2025 call for innovative tools, both new and existing, that leverage biodiversity data from the GBIF network to advance open science in support of research and policy. An expert jury will judge entries on their relevance, novelty and quality to select a pool of winners to share a prize pool of up to \u20ac20,000.<\/p>\n<p>Between now and\u00a0<strong>7 September 2025<\/strong>, individuals and teams can submit entries to this open-ended incentive competition, detailing the unique tools and inventive techniques they&#8217;ve <a title=\"Consultancy Opportunity: National Consultant to Develop an Access to Finance Guide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/consultancy-opportunity-national-consultant-to-develop-an-access-to-finance-guide\">developed or improved to increase the accessibility<\/a>, quality and usefulness of open biodiversity data.<\/p>\n<p>Challenge entries may detail newly developed functional prototypes, tools and techniques or existing ones whose capabilities and features have been improved or extended. Entrants can explore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/news\/7cNvqaLzeSyQrLOulk4L5S\/2025-ebbe-nielsen-challenge-seeks-innovations-for-open-biodiversity-data#_previous-challenge-entrants\">last year&#8217;s entries<\/a>\u00a0along with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/composition\/6m87h1AVkXkeCUvAApsoQ4\/\">dozens of previous Challenge winners<\/a>\u00a0for inspiration on ideas, topics and approaches worth pursuing.<\/p>\n<p>Entries should benefit multiple GBIF constituencies, including data users, data holders and <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Management of Specimen Data\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-management-of-specimen-data\">data managers<\/a>. Entrants have a wide remit to create and improve tools and techniques that advance open science and improve the access, <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility: Capacity Enhancement Support Program 2025\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-capacity-enhancement-support-program-2025\">quality and usefulness of GBIF-mediated<\/a> data. Challenge submissions may be new applications, visualization methods, workflows or analyses, or they build on and extend existing tools and features.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected that successful entries provide practical, pragmatic solutions for the GBIF network while advancing biodiversity informatics and biodiversity data management, particularly in alignment with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/document\/50lI7Bxn2p1vRgpbs7aXaT\/gbif-strategic-framework-2023-2027\">GBIF strategic framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_criteria\"><span id=\"Criteria\">Criteria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A panel of expert judges from relevant scientific, informatics and technology domains will evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applicability<\/strong>: Does the Submission have sufficient relevance and scope that the communities <a title=\"GBIF Call for proposals for the 2020 Capacity Enhancement Support Programme\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/gbif-call-for-proposals-for-the-2020-capacity-enhancement-support-programme-2\">GBIF support<\/a> can use or build it?<br \/>\n<strong>Benefit for GBIF network<\/strong>: Is there an added value of the submission for GBIF and how important\/what kind of added value is it (new <a title=\"Spatial Data Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/spatial-data-scientist\">data<\/a>, new community, new tools, outreach, policy briefing, etc.)?<br \/>\n<strong>Innovation\/Novelty<\/strong>: How new\/unique is the Submission&#8217;s contribution? Are there similar developments on the market (may be less user friendly)? Has a significant portion of the Submission been developed specifically for the Challenge\/is strongly related to the Challenge?<br \/>\n<strong>Quality of implementation<\/strong>: Does the Submission work reliably? Is the technical implementation well done? Are the tools and services well described?<br \/>\n<strong>Openness and repeatability<\/strong>: Are the constituent elements of the Submission, like code and content, freely available and transparent?
