Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and prolonged droughts are altering the delicate balance of these natural landscapes, threatening biodiversity, water resources, and the livelihoods of communities that depend on them. In the savannahs, erratic rainfall and extended dry seasons are disrupting the natural migration patterns of iconic wildlife species such as wildebeest and zebras, while reducing the availability of grazing land and water sources essential for both wildlife and pastoralist communities.<\/p>\n<p>In the forested highlands, <a title=\"Climate Change and Poverty: Grants Addressing Both Challenges\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-and-poverty-grants-addressing-both-challenges\">climate change<\/a> is contributing to the degradation of critical habitats, leading to a decline in endemic species that rely on specific temperature and moisture conditions to survive. Changes in precipitation are affecting <a title=\"Science without Borders Challenge 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-without-borders-challenge-2024\">forest<\/a> regeneration, increasing the risk of wildfires, and making these ecosystems more susceptible to pests and diseases. Additionally, the alteration of hydrological cycles is impacting river systems and wetlands, which serve as vital <a title=\"New publication: Factors influencing community\u2019s adoption of domestic water conservation measures\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-factors-influencing-communitys-adoption-of-domestic-water-conservation-measures\">water<\/a> sources for agriculture, energy production, and domestic use. The cumulative effects of these changes threaten not only Tanzania\u2019s rich natural heritage but also the <a title=\"Climate change threatens public health and increases foodborne diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-threatens-public-health-and-increases-foodborne-diseases\">food<\/a> security, health, and economic stability of its people, highlighting the urgent need for integrated climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Wildfires\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/10\/27\/fire-on-mount-kilimanjaro-reignites\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have raged<\/a>\u00a0on the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/front-lines-climate-change-tanzanian-communities-search-answers-deepening\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Droughts<\/a>\u00a0have depleted water sources and destroyed farmland and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/front-lines-climate-change-tanzanian-communities-search-answers-deepening\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">floods<\/a>\u00a0have hammered communities across the country. These and other impacts of climate change have had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/front-lines-climate-change-tanzanian-communities-search-answers-deepening#:~:text=For%20the%20past%20seven%20years,community%2Ddriven%20land%20use%20planning.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devastating effect<\/a>\u00a0on rural communities in the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In response to these challenges, and with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Tanzania has developed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncmc.sua.ac.tz\/news\/national-climate-change-response-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national strategy<\/a>\u00a0that outlines measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The strategy focuses on <a title=\"IUCN Launches the Project \u201cEnhancing climate resilience of Biodiversity Hotspots in Jordan\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/iucn-launches-the-project-enhancing-climate-resilience-of-biodiversity-hotspots-in-jordan\">enhancing climate resilience<\/a> in key sectors, such as agriculture, water resources, healthcare and infrastructure. It also aims to integrate <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> considerations into national development planning and promote sustainable practices. UNEP continues to assist <a title=\"Tanzania Restoration Factory-Open Application for Entrepreneurs and Mentors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tanzania-restoration-factory-open-application-for-entrepreneurs-and-mentors\">Tanzania<\/a> in implementing the strategy, by providing technical support, capacity building, and facilitating access to climate finance and knowledge-sharing platforms to enhance climate resilience and low-carbon development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cUNEP has been instrumental in supporting Tanzania&#8217;s <a title=\"Patagonia: Environmental Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/patagonia-environmental-grants\">environmental<\/a> efforts,\u201d said Selemani Saidi Jafo, the country\u2019s Minister of Industry and Trade and former Minister of State for Union Affairs and the Environment in the Vice President\u2019s Office. \u201cIt has helped us develop a new environmental policy and has provided extensive capacity-building initiatives for <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a> servants, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Tanzania is among the 58 countries that contributed their full share to UNEP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/about-un-environment-programme\/funding-and-partnerships\/environment-fund?_ga=2.43408741.150038380.1721026081-560513021.1683808328#:~:text=The%20Environment%20Fund%20is%20our,dimensions%20of%20the%202030%20Agenda.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environment Fund<\/a>\u00a0in 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"New publication: Predicting the distribution of critically endangered tree species Karomia gigas under climate change in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-predicting-the-distribution-of-critically-endangered-tree-species-karomia-gigas-under-climate-change-in-tanzania\">Tanzania is prioritizing locations most affected by climate<\/a> challenges, including regions where rising sea levels are flooding homes and agricultural fields with saltwater. In Zanzibar, for example, the <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">government<\/a> has provided communities with fishing boats, reducing their dependency on forests and promoting alternative livelihoods.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unops.org\/news-and-stories\/stories\/beyond-the-wall-cheskos-story\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sea walls have also been constructed<\/a>\u00a0in seven sites along Tanzania\u2019s coast, such as Pemba and Dar es Salaam, to prevent flooding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The country is also focusing on <a title=\"Postdoctoral Fellow: Geospatial Tools for Water Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/postdoctoral-fellow-geospatial-tools-for-water-management\">water management<\/a>, including efforts such as digging wells, building reservoirs, and improving irrigation systems to ensure consistent water access for farming and daily use, especially in areas facing recurring droughts and water scarcity, such as Arusha, Manyara and Longido. Greenhouse farming is further allowing farmers to grow crops under controlled conditions, <a title=\"AI\u2019s impact on climate change mitigation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ais-impact-on-climate-change-mitigation\">mitigating the impacts<\/a> of erratic weather patterns. Through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegef.org\/projects-operations\/country-profiles\/tanzania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Environment Facility<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/topics\/climate-action\/adaptation\/ecosystem-based-adaptation\/ecosystem-based-adaptation-tanzania-0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Climate Fund<\/a>, UNEP has assisted Tanzania in launching numerous climate adaptation projects that support the country\u2019s progress on these issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>To <a title=\"Countering biodiversity loss, plastic pollution a priority for Nordic countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/countering-biodiversity-loss-plastic-pollution-a-priority-for-nordic-countries\">counter pollution<\/a>, Tanzania banned plastic bags in 2019. Several <a title=\"Increasing species coverage to support global biodiversity conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/increasing-species-coverage-to-support-global-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation projects supported<\/a> by UNEP are meanwhile working to protect endangered species, restore habitats and promote the use of natural resources. These projects often involve local communities and aim to enhance livelihoods while conserving <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">biodiversity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe <a title=\"UN Environment Assembly Prioritizes Land Issues\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-environment-assembly-prioritizes-land-issues\">environment is a major issue<\/a> globally, and Tanzania is no exception,\u201d said Jafo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>Tanzania is one of UNEP\u2019s 2023 full-share funding partners, whose contributions to the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/about-un-environment-programme\/funding-and-partnerships\/environment-fund\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Environment Fund<\/em><\/a><em>, UNEP\u2019s core fund, enable agile, innovative global solutions for climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
