GBIF will present awards of \u20ac5 thousand each to one master\u2019s student and one doctoral student. Students must apply through and be nominated by a Head of Delegation of a GBIF participant country. The deadline for nominations is 27 June 2025, although some GBIF national delegations are likely to set earlier deadlines.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/news\/4AAE2KOKBRJ0iS2DE2fT65\/call-for-nominations-opens-for-2025-gbif-graduate-researchers-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>GBIF Graduate Researchers Award<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On behalf of its network of national\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">Voting and Associate Participants<\/a>, the GBIF Secretariat is pleased to invite nominations for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/graduate-researchers-award\">2025 Graduate Researchers Award<\/a>. This annual programme aims to highlight innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by <a title=\"Support for Undergraduate and Graduate Students\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/support-for-undergraduate-and-graduate-students\">graduate students<\/a> whose master&#8217;s and doctoral studies rely on GBIF-mediated data.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 programme will provide\u00a0<strong>two \u20ac5,000 prizes<\/strong>\u00a0recognizing the work of two early-career researchers. Candidates receive formal nominations from the node managers and heads of delegation from GBIF Participant countries, who generally select one master\u2019s and one <a title=\"PhD candidate \u2013 wind and snow damage in forest\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-candidate-wind-and-snow-damage-in-forest\">PhD candidate<\/a> whose nominations are then forwarded to the GBIF Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>An expert jury coordinated through GBIF Science Committee will then select two award recipients from the pool of nominees whose names are received by the GBIF Secretariat by Friday,\u00a0<strong>27 June 2025 (23:59 UTC+2)<\/strong>. The GBIF Secretariat will <a title=\"TAF \u2013 Meeting announcement and call for papers 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/taf-meeting-announcement-and-call-for-papers\">announce winners prior to the 32nd meeting<\/a> of the GBIF Governing Board (GB32), on 18-20 October 2025 in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, and present their work at that meeting.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_eligibility\"><span id=\"Eligibility\">Eligibility<\/span><\/h3><div id=\"toc_container\" class=\"no_bullets\"><p class=\"toc_title\">Contents<\/p><ul class=\"toc_list\"><li><a href=\"#Eligibility\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">1<\/span> Eligibility<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Submission_process_and_deadlines\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">2<\/span> Submission process and deadlines<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Award_nomination_packet\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">3<\/span> Award nomination packet<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Selection_process_and_criteria\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">4<\/span> Selection process and criteria<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Questions\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">5<\/span> Questions<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n<p>Candidates must provide a letter of support verifying their affiliation with a university graduate programme (as a currently enrolled master&#8217;s or <a title=\"Field visit by supervisors for REFOREST PhD student\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-visit-by-supervisors-for-reforest-phd-student\">PhD student<\/a>) to be eligible for the award. In addition, candidates must be either:<\/p>\n<p>a) citizens of a country participating in GBIF<br \/>\nor<br \/>\nb) students at an institution located in a GBIF participant country.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations can come from the GBIF delegation or node of either the candidate&#8217;s country of citizenship or the country of the candidate\u2019s host institution.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_submission-process-and-deadlines\"><span id=\"Submission_process_and_deadlines\">Submission process and deadlines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Students seeking nomination must apply to the node manager or head of delegation from a GBIF Voting or Associate Participant country (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">see the complete list<\/a>). National participants are responsible for establishing their own deadlines and processes for receiving and processing student applications. As a result, graduate students who <a title=\"Illinois Leopold Conservation Award Seeks Nominations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/illinois-leopold-conservation-award-seeks-nominations\">seek nomination<\/a> should consult the websites of their national GBIF Participants or contact the node manager or head of delegation directly.<\/p>\n<p>Student nominations are first reviewed and prioritized at the national level. GBIF national nodes are encouraged to work closely with the <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> communities and higher education institutions in their countries and to engage relevant university programmes and research groups. Nominations<\/p>\n<p>National node managers and\/or heads of delegation may submit a maximum of\u00a0<strong>two nominees per country<\/strong>\u00a0to the GBIF Secretariat to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:gradresearchersaward@GBIF.org\">gradresearchersaward@GBIF.org<\/a>\u00a0by the deadline for submissions:\u00a0<strong>27 June 2025<\/strong>. Submitting node managers and heads of delegations are responsible for ensuring that forwarded nominations are complete and include all the elements listed below. How the research advances biodiversity informatics and\/or the <a title=\"Plant Conservation Biology Fellowship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/plant-conservation-biology-fellowship\">conservation of biological<\/a> diversity.<br \/>\nb. The role of data accessed through GBIF in addressing these questions. Research proposals must clearly demonstrate how the study incorporates <a title=\"Call for proposals to mobilize data on soil biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-to-mobilize-data-on-soil-biodiversity\">data mobilized<\/a> through GBIF. Students with questions about GBIF-enabled data should work with academic advisors, their GBIF national node, the GBIF Secretariat or members of the Science Committee to increase their understanding.<br \/>\nc. The research scope, plan, methodologies, relevant literature citations and timetable.<br \/>\nd. If relevant, a description or an excerpt from a data <a title=\"Call for Proposals \u2013 Forest Management Planning for Village Land Forest Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-forest-management-planning-for-village-land-forest-reserves\">management plan<\/a> that outlines how data related to the research is published or will be prepared for publication through the GBIF network to GBIF.org.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curriculum vitae<\/strong>\u00a0of the student applicant including full contact information at the home institution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting documents<\/strong><br \/>\na. An official letter from the student\u2019s faculty mentor\/supervisor certifying that the applicant is a student in good standing in the graduate programme of the university.<br \/>\nb. At least one, and no more than three, letters of <a title=\"Research Support Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-support-grants\">support from established researchers<\/a> active in a field that encompasses and incorporates biodiversity informatics (e.g., genetics, species composition and traits, biogeography, ecology, systematics, et al.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"_selection-process-and-criteria\"><span id=\"Selection_process_and_criteria\">Selection process and criteria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The GBIF Science Committee will review the nominations and select winners of the <a title=\"MSc Graduate Research Assistant Fellowships for Tanzanian Nationals\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/msc-graduate-research-assistant-fellowships-for-tanzanian-nationals\">Graduate Researchers<\/a> Award.<\/p>\n<p>The criteria for the awards include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Originality and innovation<\/li>\n<li>Use of and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/document\/50lI7Bxn2p1vRgpbs7aXaT\/gbif-strategic-framework-2023-2027\">strategic significance<\/a>\u00a0for data accessed through GBIF<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"ONLINE COURSE: Designing Conservation Projects and Measuring Impact\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/online-course-designing-conservation-projects-and-measuring-impact\">Measurable effectiveness and impact<\/a> in advancing biodiversity informatics and\/or the conservation of biological diversity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proposals that are not selected may be updated and resubmitted for consideration in subsequent years. <a title=\"IDRC Doctoral Research Awards 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/idrc-doctoral-research-awards-2020\">Research submitted for the award<\/a> not have to be fully completed at the time of submission.<\/p>\n<p>Awardees are expected to acknowledge GBIF support when disseminate research results via peer-reviewed publications, presentations at professional meetings, and other media.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_questions\"><span id=\"Questions\">Questions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Have a question about the programme?
