Supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), one of the nine RLC Campuses worldwide is based at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with Tony Rinaudo, who developed the Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) approach and was awarded with the &#8220;Alternative Nobel Prize&#8221; in 2018, we offer a 3.5-year <a title=\"Scholarship Tanzanian Agricultural Economics, Social Sciences and Political Economy PhD candidate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scholarship-tanzanian-agricultural-economics-social-science-s-political-economy-phd-candidate-for-a-duration-of-four-years\">PhD scholarship for candidates<\/a> from Africa (and currently residing there), to carry out an empirical applied PhD research project related to the topic &#8220;Land degradation, environmental justice and socio-cultural dynamics in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research background<br \/>\n<\/strong>Africa experiences the most severe land degradation in the world. <a title=\"Capacity building on forest conservation and management of water sources in mount Lugala and mount Mosi village land forest reserves in Iringa Rural District (2013-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/capacity-building-on-forest-conservation-and-management-of-water-sources-in-mount-lugala-and-mount-mosi-village-land-forest-reserves-in-iringa-rural-district-2013-2015\">Land degradation particularly affects the rural<\/a> poor, mainly smallholders. Besides many other factors such as <a title=\"Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, smallholders are also contributing directly to land degradation, e.g. in the form of overuse of soils, over-grazing, or firewood collection. Local land use practices are often linked to socio-cultural practices and are essential for the survival and livelihood of the rural population. But they are also responses to increasing injustices in the access to land and <a title=\"Assistant Research Fellow (Natural Resources Management)(Re-Advertised) \u2013 2 Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/assistant-research-fellow-natural-resources-managementre-advertised-2-post\">natural resources<\/a>. In the last decades, many policies and strategies have been designed by national and international agencies to address <a title=\"Tallin-based 1MT Nation raises \u20ac1 million to restore degraded lands in Africa by planting bamboo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tallin-based-1mt-nation-raises-e1-million-to-restore-degraded-lands-in-africa-by-planting-bamboo\">land degradation in different countries in Africa<\/a>, however, often with purely technical approaches and with limited success.<\/p>\n<p>Land degradation is caused and <a title=\"New publication: Factors influencing community\u2019s adoption of domestic water conservation measures\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-factors-influencing-communitys-adoption-of-domestic-water-conservation-measures\">influenced by multiple direct and indirect socio-cultural and economic factors<\/a> as much as tenure systems which cause additional inequalities. Addressing the vulnerability of so-called local people through the lens of environmental justice and socio-cultural dynamics is essential to understand the underlying drivers of <a title=\"UN Environment Assembly Prioritizes Land Issues\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-environment-assembly-prioritizes-land-issues\">land<\/a> degradation in a holistic way. This also requires the inclusion of <a title=\"Managing the Eastern Arc Mountain forests for Carbon credits and emission trading; Local knowledge and climate change adaptation project (2007 \u2013 to date).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/managing-the-eastern-arc-mountain-forests-for-carbon-credits-and-emission-trading-local-knowledge-and-climate-change-adaptation-project-2007-to-date\">local and indigenous knowledge<\/a> both, on changing agricultural dynamics and on local practices to monitor land degradation.<\/p>\n<p>The call for this <a title=\"PhD Research Concept Note: Invasion, impacts and management of Prosopis and Water Hyacinth in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-research-concept-note-invasion-impacts-and-management-of-prosopis-and-water-hyacinth-in-tanzania\">PhD research<\/a> project is aimed at critically addressing some of these concerns and scientific knowledge gaps by empirically assessing questions of land degradation, environmental justice and socio-cultural dynamics in a case study in a selected country in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Call for PhD Applicants 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-phd-applicants-2020\">Applicants have to develop an individual PhD<\/a> research proposal narrowing down the research scope, suggesting a case study and outlining a suitable and feasible methodology. The proposal has to be submitted together with the application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The PhD scholarship call<br \/>\n<\/strong>Qualified applicants should be citizens of a country in Africa, and currently reside there. They should hold an excellent master&#8217;s or equivalent degree in social sciences, humanities, political sciences, development studies, or related disciplines from recognized institutions of higher education, and have outstanding proficiency in empirical and qualitative <a title=\"FSP 300 Research Project I: Research Methods and Proposal development\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fsp-300-research-project-i-research-methods-and-proposal-development\">research methods<\/a>. Experience in critical <a title=\"Research to Action Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-to-action-grants\">action and interdisciplinary research<\/a> is an asset. Fluency in English is mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"DAAD PhD Scholarships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/daad-phd-scholarships\">scholarship is funded by the DAAD<\/a>. It covers a scholarship for a two months language course in Germany from August 1, 2025, and a subsequent 40 months of a <a title=\"Junior Research Scientist in climate-smart forestry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/junior-research-scientist-in-climate-smart-forestry\">Junior Researcher<\/a> position at ZEF, University of Bonn, from October 1, 2025, and respective costs for travel and research.
