Applicants should normally be resident in Africa. The ABC Expedition Awards (up to \u00a35 thousand) take place within continental Africa or adjacent islands, with a strong base in conservation and birds. <a title=\"Applications for Admission into Masters and PhD programmes for the Academic Year 2018\/2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/applications-for-admission-into-masters-and-phd-programmes-for-the-academic-year-2018-2019\">Applications are reviewed multiple times a year<\/a>, with deadlines at the end of February, June, and October.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanbirdclub.org\/apply-for-an-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Link<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<header class=\"entry-header \">\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong>Apply for an Award<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Timing of applications<br \/>\n<\/strong>Before you apply to the African Bird Club (ABC) for a <a title=\"Conservation and Expedition Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-and-expedition-awards\">Conservation Award or an Expedition<\/a> Award, please note the following timetable for receiving and processing applications.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content clear\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Deadlines for receipt of applications<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Decision dates<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>end October<\/td>\n<td>February<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>end February<\/td>\n<td>June<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>end June<\/td>\n<td>October<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>A <a title=\"Managing the Eastern Arc Mountain forests for Carbon credits and emission trading; Local knowledge and climate change adaptation project (2007 \u2013 to date).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/managing-the-eastern-arc-mountain-forests-for-carbon-credits-and-emission-trading-local-knowledge-and-climate-change-adaptation-project-2007-to-date\">project must not start before the decision date<\/a> (i.e. before <a title=\"Whitley Fund for Nature \u2014 Whitley Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/whitley-fund-for-nature-whitley-awards-2023\">funding is awarded<\/a>, if the application is successful). For example, project proposals seeking a decision in February must be submitted by the end of the previous October (and have a start date after February). This is to ensure that there will be sufficient time for the Conservation Committee to review the proposal and request any further <a title=\"Call for applications for field surveyors for household survey &amp; key informant interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-for-field-surveyors-for-household-survey-key-informant-interview\">information they may need from the applicant<\/a>, and for ABC to ensure that adequate funds are in place.<\/p>\n<p>An applicant may only submit a single project proposal for a Conservation Award\u00a0<strong>or\u00a0<\/strong>an Expedition Award in any <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">funding round<\/a>. You may\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0apply for both at the same time.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>A detailed project proposal is required and applicants must complete and submit our standard application form, which can be downloaded here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanbirdclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ABC-Conservation-Award-Application-2022.doc.docx\">Conservation Award Application Form<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanbirdclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ABC-Expedition-Award-Application-2022.doc.docx\">Expedition Award Application Form<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Applicants must\u00a0<strong>only<\/strong>\u00a0use the application forms downloadable from this web page. ABC will\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0consider any other form of application.<\/p>\n<p>Expedition Awards are only available for larger, more ambitious projects\u00a0<strong>outside<\/strong>\u00a0the applicant\u2019s home country and should\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0be applied for to support <a title=\"Invitation for Students to Apply to Project Green Course\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invitation-for-students-to-apply-to-project-green-course\">projects that do not mee<\/a>t this criterion.<\/p>\n<p>Completed application forms should be submitted by e-mail to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:conservation_fund@africanbirdclub.org\">conservation_fund@africanbirdclub.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Expedition Award applications may include Appendices of up to 3 sides for maps, supporting documents, figures and\/or photos.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should look through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanbirdclub.org\/past-projects\/\">Past Projects<\/a>\u00a0pages of this website\u00a0to check if there has been a similar project undertaken previously. This will inform your application and allow you to contact others who have carried out relevant work. You should also ensure that you have <a title=\"Researcher in Applied Entomology in Fruit Trees for the Sustainable Plant Protection Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-in-applied-entomology-in-fruit-trees-for-the-sustainable-plant-protection-program\">researched the subject thoroughly before applying<\/a>, including past work contained in other published literature.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should\u00a0also consider, and address where possible, fieldwork ethics (e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/researchsupport.admin.ox.ac.uk\/files\/ethicalfieldworkcodeofconductpdf-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ethicalfieldworkcodeofconductpdf-1 (ox.ac.uk)<\/a>\u00a0and the environmental impacts and carbon footprint of their proposed project.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Important note<\/em><\/strong><em>: we discourage the inclusion of high project overhead or administration charges. If we consider these to be excessive, that will weigh against our selection of the project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>All<\/strong>\u00a0applications should include the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This should give a brief description of the aims of the project, the people and organizations involved, the location, and an outline of the methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This section is extremely important, as ABC cannot fund every application it receives and has to target high-priority <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) invites proposals for project funding\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-gbif-invites-proposals-for-project-funding\">projects<\/a>. You should include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For species-based projects, the IUCN <a title=\"Species Conservation Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/species-conservation-grant\">conservation status of the species<\/a> involved.<\/li>\n<li>For site-based projects, a description of the habitat types, current threats and whether the area has any designation such as that of a <a title=\"Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/creating-new-protected-areas\">protected area<\/a> or Important Bird Area.<\/li>\n<li>How the proposed project will benefit the species or the area in which it is found.<\/li>\n<li>A description of any <a title=\"Women in the Field skills based training program \u2013 call for participants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/women-in-the-field-skills-based-training-program-call-for-participants\">training or skills<\/a> transfer involved in the project.<\/li>\n<li>For education projects, what the benefits of the proposed project will be.<\/li>\n<li>For Expedition Awards, reference to any relevant published <a title=\"National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/development-of-the-national-bamboo-development-strategy-and-action-plan\">action plans<\/a>, e.g. <a title=\"Call for Proposals \u2013 Forest Management Planning for Village Land Forest Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-forest-management-planning-for-village-land-forest-reserves\">reserve management plans<\/a>, biodiversity action plans, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Conservation Committee will look for the following points:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A description of the methods to be used.<\/li>\n<li>Why these methods are being used.<\/li>\n<li>A timetable of the various stages of the project, including the dates when the preliminary and final reports will be produced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Expedition Awards, the Conservation Committee will\u00a0<strong>in addition<\/strong>\u00a0look at:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The time that will be spent in the host country, e.g. preparatory work, familiarisation period, survey work, writing preliminary reports, presenting results to government departments or agencies of the host country, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Whether the project has the approval of the host country\u2019s government or leading <a title=\"Call for project: Forest Conservation through Local and Indigenous Action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-forest-conservation-through-local-and-indigenous-action\">conservation NGO and whether local<\/a> counterparts from the relevant government department or agency\/NGO will work with the project team.<br \/>\nPlease provide copies of letters of support from the host country government, affiliated <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> institution, conservation NGO or recognised natural history or bird club in the Appendices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Project outputs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give details of reports, workshops, educational materials, training, etc. undertaken or produced, and how these outputs will be disseminated to <a title=\"Ways forest conservation can benefit local communities and wildlife\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ways-forest-conservation-can-benefit-local-communities-and-wildlife\">local communities<\/a>, government officials, and conservationists.<br \/>\nFor Expedition Awards, also include any scientific papers to be produced.<br \/>\nQuantify these outputs where possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"ONLINE COURSE: Designing Conservation Projects and Measuring Impact\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/online-course-designing-conservation-projects-and-measuring-impact\">Conservation impact<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Describe how your <a title=\"Funding for Conservation Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-conservation-projects\">project will benefit conservation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications of Project Proponents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give the names and brief summaries of the qualifications and experience relevant to the proposal of the key personnel. For example, if your project involves mist-netting and ringing, give details of accreditation to a national ringing scheme.<br \/>\nFor Expedition Awards, please provide a one-page CV\u00a0of the named applicants in the Appendices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Referee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Give the name, address, email, and phone number of someone who can comment knowledgeably on the application. This could be an ABC Country Representative (email addresses are published in the\u00a0<em>Bulletin of the African Bird Club<\/em>\u00a0and on this website), a <a title=\"Department of Ecosystems and Conservation Staff Meeting 2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/department-of-ecosystems-and-conservation-staff-meeting-2019\">staff member of a BirdLife Partner or other conservation<\/a> organisation, or someone from an academic institution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Provide a list of the main references used to produce the project proposal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Budget<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Provide a complete breakdown in table format of the costs of the project including materials, transport, living allowances, report production, etc. Give costs in local currency and show the conversion rate to pounds sterling (GBP).<br \/>\nIf the application is part of a larger project, indicate the total cost and clearly identify the elements you are asking ABC to support.<br \/>\nPlease also explain what will happen to any equipment bought with ABC funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bank account details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awards will usually be paid by ABC by bank transfer to a reputable third party such as the local BirdLife Partner, a <a title=\"Enhancement of local farmers\u2019 adaptive capacity to climate stresses, livelihoods and biodiversity conservation through introduction of proven mushroom cultivation and preservation technologies in villages adjacent to Kilombero nature reserve in Kilomber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/enhancement-of-local-farmers-adaptive-capacity-to-climate-stresses-livelihoods-and-biodiversity-conservation-through-introduction-of-proven-mushroom-cultivation-and-preservation-technologies-in-villag\">locally registered conservation<\/a> NGO or an academic institution.<br \/>\nPlease provide the beneficiary account name, the name of the beneficiary bank, and the last four digits only of the bank account.<br \/>\nSuccessful applicants will be contacted by email and asked to supply the full bank account details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final project report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A condition of all awards that ABC makes is that the successful applicants must submit a final project report (including a financial summary) to us, which we may choose to publish on the Past Projects pages of this website and\/or in the\u00a0<em>Bulletin of the African Bird Club<\/em>. We <a title=\"Award for Biosphere Reserve Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/award-for-biosphere-reserve-management\">reserve<\/a> the right to reclaim the full amount of an award made to a successful applicant who does not submit a final project report to us. Any such applicant will also be excluded from consideration for future awards.<\/p>\n<p>All successful applicants must also send us up to five images (in .jpeg format) with their report, which we may use to publicise the results.
