The\u00a0Department of Ecosystems and Conservation<\/a>\u00a0at Sokoine University of Agriculture offers a variety of courses, one of which is\u00a0Wildlife Management and Beekeeping<\/a>. This specific\u00a0course<\/a>\u00a0is offered as part of the\u00a0BSc Forestry<\/a>\u00a0program in the second year.<\/p>\n

From 24th to 28th March\u00a0 2025, students who were enrolled in BSc Forestry<\/a>\u00a0Year 2 participated in field practicals at SUA Training Forest, located in Ngaramtoni, Arusha. The objective of this\u00a0practical training was to provide hands-on experience<\/a>\u00a0to the students. During the training, the students successfully produced six Tanzanian Top-bar hives and established an apiary.<\/p>\n

Upon completion of this field practical training in beekeeping, the students gained several key competencies and knowledge, including:<\/p>\n

  1. Understanding the basic principles of beekeeping: The students were able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles involved in beekeeping. This includes knowledge of bee biology, hive management techniques,\u00a0honey production<\/a>, and other relevant aspects.<\/li>\n
  2. Familiarity with the legal frameworks of the beekeeping sector in Tanzania:<\/a> The students acquired knowledge regarding the legal regulations and policies governing beekeeping in Tanzania. This includes understanding the permits, licenses, and regulations that beekeepers<\/a> must adhere to when engaging in beekeeping activities.<\/li>\n
  3. Ability to plan and conduct ecological studies of bees: The\u00a0students gained the skills necessary to plan and carry out ecological<\/a>\u00a0studies related to bees. This involves studying the behavior, habitat preferences, and ecological interactions of bees in order to better understand their\u00a0conservation<\/a>\u00a0and management.<\/li>\n
  4. Application of knowledge and skills in managing beekeeping<\/a> projects: The students learned how to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during the course to effectively manage beekeeping projects. This includes aspects such as hive maintenance, honey harvesting,\u00a0pest<\/a>\u00a0and disease control, and sustainable beekeeping practices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    By completing this practical training in beekeeping, the students are now equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in beekeeping activities, contribute to the\u00a0conservation<\/a> of bees, and potentially pursue careers in the beekeeping sector in Tanzania and beyond.<\/p>\n
