{"id":10969,"date":"2025-04-12T14:35:37","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T11:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=10969"},"modified":"2025-04-12T14:35:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T11:35:37","slug":"climate-change-is-fueling-pollen-allergies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-is-fueling-pollen-allergies","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change is fueling pollen allergies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Seasonal allergy sufferers are being hit with more pollen over a longer season due to rising temperatures, but global warming is also triggering alarming extreme allergy events, say experts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">People could see the thunderstorm, but they couldn&#8217;t see what was going on inside it. Trillions of pollen particles, sucked up into the clouds as the storm formed, were now being splintered by rain, lightning and humidity into ever-smaller fragments \u2013 then cast back down to Earth for people to breathe them in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">It was around 18:00 on 21 November 2016 when the air in Melbourne, Australia, turned deadly. Emergency service phone lines lit up, people struggling to breathe began flooding into hospitals, and there was so much demand for ambulances that the vehicles were unable to reach patients stuck at home. Emergency rooms saw\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2815452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight times as many people turning up with breathing problems<\/a>\u00a0as they would normally expect. Nearly 10 times as many people with asthma were admitted to hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In total, 10 people died, including a\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/wild-weather\/melbourne-wild-weather-causes-unprecedented-thunderstorm-asthma-and-rips-roof-of-home\/7b9a8624-6446-4b31-a4fc-d8c236170314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20-year-old law student<\/a>\u00a0who passed away on her lawn, waiting for an ambulance while her family tried to resuscitate her. One survivor described how he had been breathing normally and then, within 30 minutes, found himself gasping for air. &#8220;It was insane,&#8221;\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nGKPC5JqqS4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he told reporters<\/a>\u00a0from his hospital bed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Paul Beggs, an environmental health <a title=\"Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist\">scientist<\/a> and professor at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, remembers the incident well. &#8220;It was an absolutely massive event. Unprecedented. Catastrophic,&#8221; he says. &#8220;The people in Melbourne, the doctors and the nurses and the people in pharmacies \u2013 they all didn&#8217;t know what was happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">It soon became clear that this was a massive case of &#8220;thunderstorm asthma&#8221;, which occurs when certain types of storms\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ajp6gTqMt6U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">break up pollen particles in the air, releasing proteins<\/a>\u00a0and showering them on unsuspecting people below. As temperatures rise, many regions \u2013 especially the US,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/all.13758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a>\u00a0and Australia \u2013 are seeing seasonal allergies affect an\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/full\/10.1289\/EHP173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing proportion of people<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/gcb.12755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over a longer season<\/a>\u00a0and with worse symptoms, say scientists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">This year, in the US,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/allergy-forecast-for-the-us-in-2025\/1756039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollen levels are predicted to be higher than the historical average across 39 states this season<\/a>. And that is\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11882-025-01201-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only likely<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/full\/10.1126\/sciadv.abd7658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get worse in the years to come<\/a>, experts warn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Pollen itself is an essential and ever-present part of our world. These microscopic particles pass between plants, enabling them to reproduce. While some plants spread their pollen with the help of insects, others rely on the wind, sending huge volumes of this powdery substance airborne. Many trees, grasses and weed species rely upon wind dispersal for their pollen. It is these that are especially likely to cause seasonal allergies, or hay fever.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">This occurs when your immune system mistakenly identifies the pollen as a harmful substance, triggering a response normally reserved for pathogenic bacteria or viruses. Common symptoms can include a runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. In some cases, seasonal allergies can trigger breathing difficulties when inflammation in the airways leads to swelling, making it hard to get enough air into the lungs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"quote-block\">\n<div class=\"sc-9967660-0 WkJHg\">\n<div class=\"sc-9967660-1 dBFvZy\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"sc-9967660-2 kcfPbO\">Every time we cranked up the carbon dioxide, the ragweed responded. There was some evidence they were producing a more allergenic form of pollen \u2013 Lewis Ziska<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">While\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/17534666231186726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melbourne has been the unlucky epicentre of thunderstorm asthma<\/a>, with seven thunderstorm asthma major events recorded since 1984, similar incidents have occurred around the world, from\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673685915107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a>\u00a0in the UK to\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/thorax.bmj.com\/content\/63\/7\/659.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlanta<\/a>\u00a0in the US. Although these are still rare events, climate change may be increasing the likelihood of thunderstorm asthma incidents, in part because it is\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/gcb.12755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extending pollen seasons<\/a>, but also because it is increasing the\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.0705494104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frequency of extreme weather events<\/a>, including storms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">While it isn&#8217;t possible to determine exactly how much <a title=\"European School of Sustainability Science and Research- Doctoral Programme on Climate Change Adaptation by Publications\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-school-of-sustainability-science-and-research-doctoral-programme-on-climate-change-adaptation-by-publications\">climate change<\/a> influenced the 2016 thunderstorm asthma incident in Melbourne, Beggs is &#8220;reasonably certain&#8221; it had some impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">&#8220;We know that climate change is\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(19)30015-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading to greater amounts of pollen in the atmosphere<\/a>,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s changing the seasonality of the pollen. It&#8217;s changing the types of pollen that we&#8217;re exposed to.&#8221; Beggs, who has researched thunderstorm asthma extensively, published a paper in 2024\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2815452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that examined the links between this phenomenon and climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 eLrdPC\" data-component=\"callout-block\">\n<section class=\"sc-e11d1f0-0 eVThlc\">\n<div class=\"sc-e11d1f0-1 kDQByp\">\n<p class=\"sc-e11d1f0-3 fBWdkT\">How thunderstorms supercharge pollen<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-e11d1f0-2 ewSByo\">\n<div class=\"sc-e11d1f0-4 gxuhBx\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Exactly how thunderstorms trigger or exacerbate asthma in this way is still not fully understood. The leading theory is that cold air downdrafts that occur during thunderstorm weather systems generate strong cross winds that blow at ground level,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/ukhsa.blog.gov.uk\/2022\/03\/18\/thunderstorm-asthma-and-public-health-looking-back-to-move-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whipping up pollen grains and fungal spores from grass and plants<\/a>. These then get carried high into the storm system by updrafts, where moisture in the clouds causes them to\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/cea.12709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swell and break apart into smaller fragments<\/a>, massively increasing the number of allergen particles in the air. The strong electric field that <a title=\"Value chain development for selected forest-based products to enhance community livelihoods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/value-chain-development-for-selected-forest-based-products-to-enhance-community-livelihoods\">develops during thunderstorms may also enhance<\/a> the rupture of the pollen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-e11d1f0-4 gxuhBx\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">This smaller particle size makes it easier for the pollen fragments to get into the airways as they are carried back to ground-level by cold down-draft winds. Pollen levels seem to spike during the first\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/cea.12709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20-30 minutes of a thunderstorm<\/a>, according to studies on the phenomenon.\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.ersnet.org\/content\/erj\/64\/suppl68\/pa1262\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Younger people seem to be particularly affected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Thankfully, major thunderstorm asthma <a title=\"2023 Heat Events Break Records, Not Rare Anymore\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2023-heat-events-break-records-not-rare-anymore\">events remain rare<\/a>. But <a title=\"Trees and People: Resilience in a Changing Climate \u2013 John G. Bene Fellowship 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trees-and-people-resilience-in-a-changing-climate-john-g-bene-fellowship-2020\">climate change is increasing people&#8217;s<\/a> risk of pollen exposure in other ways, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">For one thing, rising temperatures mean that pollen seasons \u2013 when plants emit pollen, typically during spring and summer \u2013 are starting earlier and lasting longer, says Elaine Fuertes, a <a title=\"Climate change threatens public health and increases foodborne diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-threatens-public-health-and-increases-foodborne-diseases\">public health<\/a> scientist who focuses on the environment and allergic disease at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, UK. &#8220;You&#8217;re going to get people who experience symptoms earlier in the year, for a longer period of time,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">In parts of the world, including the US and Europe, one of the key culprits is ragweed \u2013 a widespread group of flowering plants that many people consider to be weeds. There are various species of ragweed around the world but they can produce mind-bending amounts of pollen. A single plant is capable of\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/allergies\/pollen-allergy\/ragweed-allergy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emitting one billion pollen grains<\/a>, for example. Ragweed grows in gardens and farmland but also in nooks and crannies in <a title=\"PhD Candidate \u201cHigh-tech sensing for turbulent and radiant heat exchange in urban environments\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-candidate-high-tech-sensing-for-turbulent-and-radiant-heat-exchange-in-urban-environments\">urban environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Allergies to ragweed pollen already\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/types-of-allergies\/pollen-allergy\/ragweed-pollen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect some 50 million people in the US alone<\/a>. A study analysing data from 11 locations in <a title=\"Forest fires: North America\u2019s boreal forests are burning a lot, but less than 150 years ago\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-fires-north-americas-boreal-forests-are-burning-a-lot-but-less-than-150-years-ago\">North America<\/a> between 1995 to 2015 found that 10 of those locations experienced longer ragweed pollen seasons \u2013 sometimes much longer.\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climate-indicators\/climate-change-indicators-ragweed-pollen-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">During that 20-year period<\/a>, the season lengthened by 25 days in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 21 days in Fargo, North Dakota and 18 days in Minneapolis, Minnesota.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The winter warms, the springs are starting earlier, and the falls are being delayed, and so the time that you spend outdoors in contact with allergic pollen is definitely going up,&#8221; says Lewis Ziska, associate professor of environmental health science at Columbia University, in New York, US, and one of the <a title=\"Junior Research Scientist in climate-smart forestry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/junior-research-scientist-in-climate-smart-forestry\">scientists who researched<\/a> the ragweed pollen season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">These <a title=\"Climate change wreaks havoc through large parts of Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-wreaks-havoc-through-large-parts-of-africa\">changes get more drastic in northern parts<\/a> of North America, Europe and Asia, Ziska says. But also in Australia and the <a title=\"BIOPAMA: Medium Grants Eastern and Southern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biopama-medium-grants-eastern-and-southern-africa\">southern parts of South America and Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Without immediate cuts to <a title=\"Homeworld Collective: Biotech in Greenhouse Gas Removal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/homeworld-collective-biotech-in-greenhouse-gas-removal\">greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions, the effect is likely to only get worse. It is also that the amount of allergens in the air are increasing in many parts of the world. In the 2000s, the pollen season in the continental US started three days earlier than it did during the 1990s, but crucially,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/gcb.12755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the amount of pollen in the air was also 46% higher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">This is partly because carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere are rising, due to emissions from <a title=\"Human activities impact wildlife, even in protected areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/human-activities-impact-wildlife-even-in-protected-areas\">human activities<\/a>. And many of the most bothersome plants for hay fever sufferers thrive on CO2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">When researchers\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0111712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grew a certain type of grass<\/a>\u00a0under different CO2 levels, for example, they found that plants grown in an atmosphere containing CO2 at 800 parts per million (ppm) had flowers that produced about 50% more pollen than plants grown in air containing 400ppm. The latter mimics current levels of CO2 in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Similarly, other <a title=\"Scientists grow space seeds to adapt to Earth\u2019s climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientists-grow-space-seeds-to-adapt-to-earths-climate-change\">scientists have also experimented with growing<\/a> different types of oak tree, the pollen from which often causes hay fever in countries such as South Korea. Under a 720ppm CO2 scenario, they found that\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00484-018-1558-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">each oak tree had an average pollen count 13 times what the trees had under a 400ppm scenario<\/a>. Even at 560ppm, pollen production was 3.5 times higher than current levels.<\/p>\n<p>Ziska, who authored the 2022 book\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/greenhouse-planet\/9780231206709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenhouse Planet<\/a>, ran similar experiments with ragweed. His results mirror those of other researchers. &#8220;Every time we cranked up the carbon dioxide, the ragweed plants responded. They grew more. They produced more pollen,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And there was some evidence that they were producing a more allergenic form of the pollen, one that could induce your immune system to respond even to a greater extent than had been in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">The spread of <a title=\"Invasive Species\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/invasive-species\">invasive species<\/a> across new parts of the world is also triggering allergic reactions in new populations of people. While originally from North America, ragweed, for example, has\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/1365-2664.12156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spread across Europe<\/a>, as well as into Australia,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-540-71318-0_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia<\/a>\u00a0and South America. Even in parts of Europe where ragweed pollen is virtually absent at present, including southern UK and Germany, &#8220;pollen loads become substantial&#8221; under both moderate or high-end climate scenarios, researchers wrote in a 2015 study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">About one-third of the increase is due to the continuing spread of the invasive species, the <a title=\"PhD Research Concept Note: Invasion, impacts and management of Prosopis and Water Hyacinth in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-research-concept-note-invasion-impacts-and-management-of-prosopis-and-water-hyacinth-in-tanzania\">researchers note<\/a>. The remaining two-thirds is specifically <a title=\"UNICEF: Millions of children globally face water scarcity due to climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unicef-millions-of-children-globally-face-water-scarcity-due-to-climate-change\">due to climate change<\/a>, including the lengthening of the growing season as temperatures warm. &#8220;So it&#8217;ll be an earlier season, a longer season, as well as a more intense season for those who experience allergic symptoms \u2013 and then a higher risk of new sensitisation for a previously unexposed population,&#8221; Fuertes says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Not every region in the world will see more pollen production. Some researchers have found that southern California, for example, will experience earlier\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/bg.copernicus.org\/articles\/11\/1461\/2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">but less productive pollen seasons<\/a>, largely as a result of reduced rainfall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">But these predictions don&#8217;t account for all the potential <a title=\"Restoring and Mitigating Climate Change Effects on Forest Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-and-mitigating-climate-change-effects-on-forest-biodiversity\">effects of climate change<\/a> on airborne allergens. There could also be health impacts from the\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10176314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased likelihood of wildfires, for example, because this raises the risk of both asthma and allergy symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Relatively speaking, the amount of pollen in the air will still vary from year to year, Fuertes points out. But that may not be of much help to hay fever sufferers. &#8220;Once you&#8217;re sensitised and go on to develop allergic symptoms, you&#8217;ll still likely experience symptoms during years when pollen levels may be lower than average,&#8221; she says. &#8220;You&#8217;ll react to the pollen that&#8217;s around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">So, what can people do about this? Cutting carbon emissions would help to avert some of the worst <a title=\"Global Climate Impacts of 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-climate-impacts-of-2024\">climate impacts<\/a> and other strategies might also mitigate the problem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">It might be possible to make some drastic but direct interventions, for example. A century ago, some US cities even set up commissions to tackle ragweed.\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1932\/08\/12\/archives\/chicago-employs-1350-in-hay-fever-fight-jobless-used-to-cut-down.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Chicago employs 1,350 in hay fever fight,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0blares one headline from 1932. Today, it is in <a title=\"New Nature Restoration Law boosts biodiversity and climate action across Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-nature-restoration-law-boosts-biodiversity-and-climate-action-across-europe\">Europe where you can find coordinated action<\/a> ongoing. In Berlin, workers have been dispatched to\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/aacijournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1710-1492-10-42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">find and eliminate ragweed around the city<\/a>, while\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bafu.admin.ch\/bafu\/en\/home\/topics\/biotechnology\/dossiers\/changes-to-regulation-on-invasive-alien-plants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switzerland banned the import or sale of the plant in 2024<\/a>\u00a0and established\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/sci-tech\/invasive-species-in-switzerland-_foreign-elements-endangering-swiss-biodiversity\/44978842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteer groups patrolling public parks<\/a>\u00a0to pull it out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Other solutions lie in smarter urban design. &#8220;We should definitely green our cities,&#8221; Fuertes says. &#8220;But we do need to do it thoughtfully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Planting of exotic species, for example,\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S016920461100137X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can trigger new allergies<\/a>. Opting for the male, pollen producing trees in some species over &#8220;messy&#8221; fruit and seed producing female ones \u2013 so-called &#8220;botanical sexism&#8221; \u2013 can also increase pollen levels in urban areas, although studies have shown the effect of this bias is\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/nrs\/pubs\/jrnl\/2024\/nrs_2024_katz_001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relatively small in major cities such as New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">It is also important to monitor and forecast pollen levels, <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">scientists say<\/a>. &#8220;We need to know what we&#8217;re breathing in. That&#8217;s a pretty fundamental thing in terms of our health,&#8221; says Beggs, who points out that while most people take it for granted that they can get reliable, real-time, validated information on metrics like <a title=\"Restoring Degraded Forests Could Bring Back Lost Rainfall, Cooler Temperatures\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-degraded-forests-could-bring-back-lost-rainfall-cooler-temperatures\">temperature or rainfall<\/a> in their area, relatively few can say the same for airborne allergens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">But even those services that are modelling pollen counts in an extensive, detailed way \u2013\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41597-024-03686-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as the Finnish Meteorological Institute<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 aren&#8217;t monitoring or modelling airborne allergen levels, which are more accurate as each pollen grain can release different amounts of allergens and they can vary by the weather conditions. These are a different measurement, Fuertes points out, and\u00a0<a class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 beIoQm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacionline.org\/article\/S0091-6749(23)01469-0\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one that she&#8217;s shown is more closely linked to allergy symptoms<\/a>. &#8220;Nobody is measuring allergen levels on a routine basis,&#8221; Fuertes says. &#8220;We should be moving towards that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fezwLZ\">Overall, <a title=\"Livestock farming worsens climate change, says expert\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/livestock-farming-worsens-climate-change-says-expert\">experts say<\/a>, the science is clear. Without concrete, coordinated action, <a title=\"Global Soil Moisture Declining Due to Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-soil-moisture-declining-due-to-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> will continue to make hay fever worse across many regions of the world. This might include more dramatic, deadly events like thunderstorm asthma.
