Why medical products undergo irradiation? Or how radiation can help turn plastic waste into new, high <a title=\"Value chain development for selected forest-based products to enhance community livelihoods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/value-chain-development-for-selected-forest-based-products-to-enhance-community-livelihoods\">value products<\/a> like floor tiles?<\/p>\n<p>Advancements in exciting topics like these will be highlighted at the IAEA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/events\/icarst-2025\">Third International Conference on Applications of Radiation Science and Technology\u00a0<\/a>(#ICARST2025), which started in Vienna today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRadiation <a title=\"Enhancing the revival of homegardens for improved utility and productivity through the use of proven agroforestry technologies in the Northern Highlands of Tanzania (2012-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/enhancing-the-revival-of-homegardens-for-improved-utility-and-productivity-through-the-use-of-proven-agroforestry-technologies-in-the-northern-highlands-of-tanzania-2012-2015\">technology improves<\/a> lives every day\u2014from safer food and medical tools to cleaner environments,\u201d said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, who opened the event.<\/p>\n<p>It sterilizes half of all medical equipment, protects food from parasites and spoilage, and can even help beat <a title=\"Unlocking the potential of bamboo and rattan as nature-based solution to tackle plastic pollution\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unlocking-the-potential-of-bamboo-and-rattan-as-nature-based-solution-to-tackle-plastic-pollution\">plastic pollution,&#8221;<\/a> he added. &#8220;Yet, in many places, access to these tools is still limited. To change that, we must tackle barriers in infrastructure, awareness, and financing\u2014so no country is left out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field-newsstory-section\">\n<div class=\"basicpage-section\">\n<div class=\"basic-page-section-item\">\n<h2>Radiation Science<\/h2>\n<div class=\"newsstory-section-body\">\n<p>Building on the momentum of two previous conferences in 2017 and 2022, ICARST-2025 will continue to serve as a key platform for around 1000 experts, policymakers and industry leaders attending the event. It will showcase how radiation science supports advances that drive the production of high-performance materials, enhance environmental <a title=\"Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Environments (RISE) Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/resilient-inclusive-and-sustainable-environments-rise-grant\">sustainability<\/a> and optimize industrial operations.<\/p>\n<p>With an increased focus on sustainable innovations, discussions will address the current state of radiation technology programmes in academia and industry, explore new research frontiers and <a title=\"CBD Events Discuss Inclusive Wealth, Nature-based Climate Solutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/cbd-events-discuss-inclusive-wealth-nature-based-climate-solutions\">discuss the benefits of \u00a0radiation-based solutions<\/a> for socioeconomic development. It will focus in particular on the\u00a0 food, health, water and industry, innovation, and infrastructure sectors, taking into account responsible consumption and production and <a title=\"Support for Climate Action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/support-for-climate-action\">climate action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"Call for applications for field surveyors for household survey &amp; key informant interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-for-field-surveyors-for-household-survey-key-informant-interview\">key feature will be radiation-based techniques for medical applications<\/a>, including sterilization processes and tissue banking. The role of these techniques in <a title=\"Celebration of World Food Safety Day \u2013 Theme: Food Safety, Everyone\u2019s business\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/celebration-of-world-food-safety-day-theme-food-safety-everyone-s-business\">food safety<\/a> will also be explored.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"basicpage-section\">\n<div class=\"basic-page-section-item\">\n<div class=\"basicpage-section-image width-100\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/full_page_width_landscape_16_9\/public\/icarst_20252.jpg?itok=kX9SNWP9\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"basicpage-section-image-caption\">\n<p>Around a thousand experts, policymakers and industry leaders will attend ICARST in 2025. Calma\/IAEA)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"newsstory-section-body\">\n<p>\u00a0ICARST-2025 will feature plenary presentations, panel discussions and poster sessions covering a wide range of topics, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>advances in radiation chemistry, science, and technology<\/li>\n<li>radiation-modified materials for industrial applications<\/li>\n<li>non-destructive testing applications, including ai-driven neutron and muon radiography<\/li>\n<li>dosimetry, standards, and quality <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Management of Specimen Data\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-management-of-specimen-data\">management of irradiation facilities<\/a><\/li>\n<li>environmental applications, such as radiation <a title=\"Degree Awardees for MSc Ecosystems Science, Management, and Forestry \u2013 May 23, 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/degree-awardees-for-msc-ecosystems-science-management-and-forestry-may-23-2024\">sciences for remediation and post-disaster management<\/a><\/li>\n<li>emerging radiation sources, including next-generation gamma rays, electron beams, and x ray technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, experts will present innovations in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/topics\/radiotracers\">radiotracers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/topics\/radiation-sources\/sealed-radioactive-sources\">sealed sources<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/topics\/nucleonic-gauging\">nucleonic control systems<\/a>\u00a0used for industrial process control and optimization.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond technical discussions, ICARST-2025 will also explore education, training and certification in radiation <a title=\"Employment Vacancies at Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/employment-vacancies-at-mbeya-university-of-science-and-technology-must\">science and technology<\/a>, ensuring that the next generation of experts is well-equipped to drive innovation in the field. Several side events and <a title=\"Columbia\u2019s Earth Networks: Collaborative Climate Change Solutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/columbias-earth-networks-collaborative-climate-change-solutions\">networking opportunities will further support knowledge sharing and collaboration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The conference proceedings, including recorded sessions and <a title=\"COP15: Five key takeaways from the UN biodiversity summit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/cop15-five-key-takeaways-from-the-un-biodiversity-summit\">key takeaways<\/a>, will be made available to participants and the broader scientific community. For those unable to attend in person and for anyone interested, the conference is being livestreamed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/events\/icarst-2025\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The IAEA helps countries maximize the benefits of radiation science and <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">technology through technical<\/a> cooperation, expert guidance and training programmes. The Agency also fosters knowledge transfer through initiatives such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/about\/partnerships\/collaborating-centres\">Collaborating Centres<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/services\/coordinated-research-activities\">Coordinated Research Activities<\/a>, while providing peer reviews, safety standards and technical documents.
