Grants are to local forest communities, indigenous federations, and NGOs active in rainforest zones worldwide. Grants generally do not exceed US$5 thousand. Applications can be submitted at any time.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.ran.org\/protect-an-acre-grant-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Protect an Acre<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>RAN established Protect-an-Acre (PAA) in 1993 to protect the world\u2019s forests and support the rights of their inhabitants through <a title=\"CALL FOR PROPOSALS: GEF SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-gef-small-grants-programme\">small grants<\/a> to traditionally under-funded organizations and communities in forest regions. PAA is a grassroots alternative to \u201cbuy-an-acre\u201d programs that seek to provide rainforest protection by buying tracts of land, but which often fail to address the priorities or rights of <a title=\"Ways forest conservation can benefit local communities and wildlife\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ways-forest-conservation-can-benefit-local-communities-and-wildlife\">local Indigenous and forest communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Please read below about the criteria which qualifies <a title=\"Request for Proposals: Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/request-for-proposals-illegal-wildlife-trade-challenge-fund\">requests for funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To inquire regarding the possibility of funding for your organization and to request an online version of the application, please contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:paa@ran.org\">paa@ran.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top priority is given to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Projects emphasizing grassroots organizing, education, training and <a title=\"International Environmental Governance Capacity Building\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/international-environmental-governance-capacity-building\">capacity building<\/a> to develop skills, increase awareness and\/or build alliances towards protection of forests and increased community control over local resources<\/p>\n<p>2. Projects emphasizing community-driven, strategic use of non-violent direct action that <a title=\"Local Project Support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/local-project-support\">supports local<\/a> resistance to destructive development activities such as logging, oil extraction, dam construction and the expansion of monoculture plantations.<\/p>\n<p>3. Projects supporting Indigenous communities securing or maintaining legal land title recognition (demarcation of territory, GPS mapping, resource inventories and <a title=\"Call for Proposals \u2013 Forest Management Planning for Village Land Forest Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-forest-management-planning-for-village-land-forest-reserves\">management plans<\/a>, meetings with neighboring communities, etc.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also supported:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4. Environmentally and socially sound <a title=\"Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Environments (RISE) Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/resilient-inclusive-and-sustainable-environments-rise-grant\">sustainable<\/a> economic alternative initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>5. Travel and other opportunities that amplify community voices in regional, <a title=\"Consultancy Opportunity: National Consultant to Develop an Access to Finance Guide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/consultancy-opportunity-national-consultant-to-develop-an-access-to-finance-guide\">national and international forums and provide access<\/a> to decision makers.<\/p>\n<p>6. <a title=\"Research Grants for Field Research 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-for-field-research-2024\">Field studies and original research<\/a> used to hold companies accountable for their on-the-ground activities<\/p>\n<p>7. Seed money for emerging grassroots organizations<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applications are evaluated on the following criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Applicant\u2019s capacity to carry out proposed activities.<\/p>\n<p>2. Project <a title=\"National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/development-of-the-national-bamboo-development-strategy-and-action-plan\">strategy and urgency\/includes well-defined objectives and planned<\/a> activities.<\/p>\n<p>3. Scale and scope of community participation, including when <a title=\"Call for MSc and PhD Applications 2020\/2021 \u2013 Africa Center of Excellence for Climate Smart Agriculture and Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-msc-and-phd-applications-2020-2021-africa-center-of-excellence-for-climate-smart-agriculture-and-biodiversity-conservation\">applicable that the community where the project is centered<\/a> and\/or that will be impacted by the initiative be engaged in the decision-making process related to the activities.<\/p>\n<p>4. Ecological\/cultural significance of forest\/local environment.<\/p>\n<p>5. Project honors and upholds diversity and equity.<\/p>\n<p>6. Activities would be significantly enhanced by a small grant\/applicant\u2019s annual budget (under $150,000 is prioritized), overall access to resources and previous funding from RAN.<\/p>\n<p>Although grants are made in all regions and unsolicited proposals are <a title=\"Welcome\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/\">welcome<\/a>, geographic priority areas are Southeast Asia and South and North America (Native American\/First Nations applications are prioritized in the U.S. and Canada). Applicants from other regions are encouraged to contact paa@ran.org prior to submitting an application to inquire regarding the possibility of funding.<\/p>\n<p>PAA does not support individual, governmental, or exclusively <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> projects. Grants generally do not exceed $5,000. Certain components of <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) invites proposals for project funding\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-gbif-invites-proposals-for-project-funding\">projects with larger budgets can be funded<\/a> when those components significantly contribute to the project\u2019s final outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Only completed applications will be considered. <a title=\"Call for applications for field surveyors for household survey &amp; key informant interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-for-field-surveyors-for-household-survey-key-informant-interview\">Applicants will be informed<\/a> within 4 weeks if their application has been short-listed or declined. The final decision on short-listed projects can take a couple of weeks longer, depending on how quickly references come back and how long it takes to resolve any inquiries regarding the application.
