{"id":3908,"date":"2022-09-19T22:01:30","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T19:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=3908"},"modified":"2022-09-22T09:58:50","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T06:58:50","slug":"field-practical-training-on-primate-survey-methods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-on-primate-survey-methods","title":{"rendered":"Field practical training on primate survey methods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The field practical training on primate survey methods was offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erasmuscontan.eu\/\">CONTAN project<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/\">Department of Ecosystems and Conservation<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sua.ac.tz\/\">Sokoine University of Agriculture<\/a> in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifi.it\/\">University of Florence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muse.it\/\">MUSE \u2013 Science museum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ku.dk\/\">University of Copenhagen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-bayreuth.de\/en\/\">University of Bayreuth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udsm.ac.tz\/\">University of Dar es Salaam<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mwekawildlife.ac.tz\/\">College of African Wildlife Management<\/a> conducted field practical training on primate survey methods as a part of the biodiversity assessment, monitoring, and conservation.<\/p>\n<p>On 19<sup>th<\/sup> September 2022, a total of 30 students studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/students\/postgraduate-students\/master-of-science-in-ecosystems-science-and-management\">MSc. Ecosystems Science and Management<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/postgraduate-degrees\/master-of-science-in-forestry\">MSc. Forestry<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/\">Department of Ecosystems and Conservation<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sua.ac.tz\/\">Sokoine University of Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0attended field practical training on the ecological methods for studying mammals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzaniaparks.go.tz\/national_parks\/udzungwa-mountains-national-park\">Udzungwa Mountains National park<\/a> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udzungwacentre.org\/\">Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzaniaparks.go.tz\/national_parks\/udzungwa-mountains-national-park\">Udzungwa Mountains National park<\/a> is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains that form a diversity of life. It is among 36 Biodiversity hotspots in the world harboring about 36% of endemic plants and animal species. It is home to famous endemic species such as Sanje mangabey\u00a0(<em>Cercocebus sanjei<\/em>), Udzungwa red colobus (<em>Piliocolobus gordonorum<\/em>), Udzungwa forest partridge\u00a0(<em>Xenoperdix udzungwensis<\/em>) and rufous-winged sunbird\u00a0(<em>Cinnyris rufipennis<\/em>) to mention few.<\/p>\n<p>Mammals such as primates are good indicators of healthy ecosystems. They play an important role in ecosystems by providing essential services such as regulating insect populations, seed dispersal, and pollination.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion of the field practical training students were able to;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply ecological different techniques for counting and surveying mammals and other related animals for ecological studies<\/li>\n<li>Set and use camera trapping techniques for collecting data on mammals<\/li>\n<li>Record field data from the survey for mammals\u2019 ecology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter
