This was one of the main messages of a side event, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Government of China, convened during the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 15) in Montreal, Canada.<span id=\"more-413706\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 17 December\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enb.iisd.org\/high-level-breakfast-soil-biodiversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High-Level Breakfast on Soil Biodiversity<\/a>\u00a0saw the launch of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalsoilbiodiversity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Soil Biodiversity Observatory (GLOSOB)<\/a>, which aims to forecast the status of soil biodiversity and soil health.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, Zhao Yingmin, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, China, called GLOSOB\u2019s launch timely for contributing to implementation of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). He highlighted national measures to address soil <a title=\"Biodiversity on a Changing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-on-a-changing-planet\">biodiversity<\/a>, including a national soil census, which is expected to be completed in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In a keynote presentation, George Brown, on behalf of members of the International Network on <a title=\"Call for proposals to mobilize data on soil biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-to-mobilize-data-on-soil-biodiversity\">Soil Biodiversity<\/a> (NETSOB), emphasized that soil degradation affects the delivery of key soil services such as climate and flood regulation, the discovery of important pharmaceuticals, and the habitat of a vast \u201cunderground universe\u201d of soil organisms.<\/p>\n<p>Lifeng Li, FAO, outlined GLOSOB\u2019s mission of providing <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Data Papers on Freshwater Species\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-data-papers-on-freshwater-species\">global soil biodiversity data and information<\/a> for guiding evidence-based decision making. He explained that under the GLOSOB, countries will be responsible for measuring, monitoring, and sharing <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Capacity Enhancement Support Program 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-capacity-enhancement-support-program-2022\">biodiversity information on hotspots in line with NETSOB\u2019s harmonized protocols and country capacities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers also highlighted, among others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the role of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/global-soil-partnership\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Soil Partnership<\/a>\u00a0in supporting food security and addressing biodiversity loss;<\/li>\n<li>the convening, by the African Union, of a summit on <a title=\"FBE 610 Forest Soils \u2013 Fertility and Plant Nutrition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbe-610-forest-soils-fertility-and-plant-nutrition\">fertilizer and soil<\/a> health in 2023 in Senegal;<\/li>\n<li>a proposed EU <a title=\"FBA 606: Soil and Water Management in Agroforestry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fba-606-soil-and-water-management-in-agroforestry\">soil health law, which aims to accord soil the same level of protection as water<\/a>, air, and the marine environment; and<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/global-soil-partnership\/resources\/highlights\/detail\/en\/c\/1627617\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plan of Action of the International Initiative for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Soil Biodiversity<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other 17 December events focused on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/enb.iisd.org\/deepening-synergies-post-2020-gbf-sendai-framework-drr-2030-agenda-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deepening synergies<\/a>\u00a0between the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement on climate change, convened by UNDRR; and<\/li>\n<li>green and blue finance solutions for conservation and sustainable management and use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enb.iisd.org\/green-blue-finance-solutions-road-sustainable-belize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodiversity in Belize<\/a>, organized by the Government of Belize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB)<\/em>\u00a0covered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enb.iisd.org\/un-biodiversity-conference-oewg5-cbd-cop15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selected side events<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0UN Biodiversity\u00a0Conference, which convened from 7-19 December\u00a02022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Loss of soil biodiversity remains one of the main global threats to food security in many regions of the world and is likely greater than estimated due to a lack of data.
