This annual programme aims to foster and recognize innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by graduate students whose master\u2019s and doctoral studies rely on GBIF-mediated data.<\/p>\n<p>The 2023 programme will provide a pair of \u20ac5,000 prizes recognizing the work of two early-career researchers\u2014preferably, one master\u2019s and one PhD candidate\u2014who receive formally nominations from the heads of delegation or node managers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">GBIF Participant countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A jury organized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/contact-us\/directory?group=scienceCommittee\">GBIF Science Committee<\/a>\u00a0will select two award recipients from the pool of nominees whose names are received by the GBIF Secretariat by\u00a0<strong>19 June 2023<\/strong>. In addition, candidates must be\u00a0<strong>either<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a) citizens of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">country participating in GBIF<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>or<\/strong><br \/>\nb) students at an institution located in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">GBIF participant country<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nominations can come from the GBIF delegation or node of\u00a0<strong>either<\/strong>\u00a0the candidate&#8217;s country of citizenship\u00a0<strong>or<\/strong>\u00a0the country of the candidate\u2019s host institution.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_submission-process-and-deadlines\"><span id=\"Submission_process_and_deadlines\">Submission process and deadlines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Students seeking nomination must apply to the Head of Delegation or node manager of a GBIF Voting or Associate Participant country (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/the-gbif-network\">see the complete list<\/a>). National participants are responsible for establishing their own deadlines and processes for receiving and processing student applications. As a result, graduate students who seek nomination should <a title=\"Consultancy Opportunity: National Consultant to Develop an Access to Finance Guide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/consultancy-opportunity-national-consultant-to-develop-an-access-to-finance-guide\">consult the websites of their national<\/a> GBIF Participants or contact the Head of Delegation or node manager directly.<\/p>\n<p>Student proposals are first reviewed and prioritized at the national level. GBIF national nodes are encouraged to work closely with the <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> communities and higher education institutions in their countries and to reach out to relevant university programmes and research groups.<\/p>\n<p>National Heads of Delegation and\/or node managers may submit a maximum of two nominees per country to the GBIF Secretariat to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:gradresearchersaward@gbif.org\">gradresearchersaward@GBIF.org<\/a>\u00a0by the deadline for submissions:\u00a0<strong>19 June 2023<\/strong>. Heads of Delegations in cooperation with node managers will ensure that submissions are complete and include all the elements listed below. Submissions of incomplete proposals will not be considered.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"_award-nomination-packet\"><span id=\"Award_nomination_packet\">Award nomination packet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Candidates should prepare their proposal and nomination packets to include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Research summary<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>200 words<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project description<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>maximum 5 pages, 12-point Arial<\/em>) that describes<br \/>\na. How the research advances <a title=\"Biodiversity on a Changing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-on-a-changing-planet\">biodiversity<\/a> informatics and\/or the conservation of biological diversity.<br \/>\nb.\u00a0<strong>The role of data accessed through GBIF in addressing these questions<\/strong>. Research <a title=\"Call for proposals to mobilize data on soil biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-to-mobilize-data-on-soil-biodiversity\">proposals must clearly demonstrate how the study incorporates data mobilized<\/a> through GBIF. Students with questions about GBIF-enabled data should work with academic advisors, their GBIF national node, the GBIF Secretariat or members of the Science Committee to increase their understanding.<br \/>\nc. The research scope, plan, methodologies, relevant literature citations and timetable.<br \/>\nd. If relevant, a description or an excerpt from a <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Management of Specimen Data\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-management-of-specimen-data\">data management<\/a> plan that outlines how data related to the research is published or will be prepared for publication through the GBIF network to GBIF.org.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curriculum vitae<\/strong>\u00a0of the student <a title=\"Call for applications for field surveyors for household survey &amp; key informant interview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-for-field-surveyors-for-household-survey-key-informant-interview\">applicant including full contact information<\/a> at the home institution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting documents<\/strong><br \/>\na. An official letter from the student\u2019s faculty mentor\/supervisor certifying that the <a title=\"Applications for Admission into Masters and PhD programmes for the Academic Year 2018\/2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/applications-for-admission-into-masters-and-phd-programmes-for-the-academic-year-2018-2019\">applicant is a student in good standing in the graduate programme<\/a> of the university.<br \/>\nb. At least one, and no more than three, letters of support from established <a title=\"Doctoral Researchers\/PhD Students (9 positions) in the field of forest biodiversity research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/doctoral-researchers-phd-students-9-positions-in-the-field-of-forest-biodiversity-research\">researchers active in a field that encompasses and incorporates biodiversity<\/a> informatics (e.g., genetics, species composition and traits, biogeography, ecology, systematics, et al.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"_selection-process-and-criteria\"><span id=\"Selection_process_and_criteria\">Selection process and criteria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/contact-us\/directory?group=scienceCommittee\">GBIF Science Committee<\/a>\u00a0will review the nominations and select winners of the Graduate Researchers Award.<\/p>\n<p>The criteria for the awards include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Originality and innovation<\/li>\n<li>Use of and strategic significance for data accessed through GBIF<\/li>\n<li>Measurable effectiveness and impact in advancing biodiversity informatics and\/or the conservation of <a title=\"Convention on Biological Diversity \u2014 Bio-Bridge Initiative\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/convention-on-biological-diversity-bio-bridge-initiative\">biological diversity<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proposals that are not selected may be updated and resubmitted for consideration in subsequent years.<\/p>\n<p>Awardees are expected to acknowledge GBIF support when disseminate research results via peer-reviewed publications, presentations at professional meetings, and other media.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On behalf of the network of national Participants, the GBIF Secretariat is pleased to invite nominations for the\u00a02023 Graduate Researchers Award.
