It aims at\u00a0<strong>empowering African Researchers (PhD or Master degree with extensive research experience) to carry out Earth Observation (EO) R&amp;D activities<\/strong>\u00a0relevant for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eo4society.esa.int\/eo-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EO AFRICA Initiative<\/a>. The African Research Fellows shall maximise the use of EO data in synergy with in-situ and state-of-the-art modelling approaches, in a cloud environment, to respond to the challenges the African continent is facing with respect to: water resources management and food security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With this call, ESA offers 1-year fellowships to four African Researchers to work at the ESA-ESRIN premises in Frascati (Rome, Italy) in collaboration with ESA\u2019s scientists.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"OBJECTIVE\"><strong>OBJECTIVE<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>EO AFRICA stands for African Framework for Research, Innovation, Communities and Applications Building an African-European R&amp;D partnership.<strong>\u00a0It aims to build an African-European R&amp;D partnership to facilitate the adoption of Earth Observation and related space technology in Africa,<\/strong>\u00a0in full coordination with the operational GMES &amp; Africa initiative led by the AUC. The initiative is driven by African user needs, and follows a long-term vision (&gt;10 years) for the emergent digital era in Africa. The new generation of African researchers can boost R&amp;D in Africa, and with this call they will be empowered to <a title=\"United Nations Industrial Development Organisation \u2014 Innovative Solutions towards Net-Zero\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-industrial-development-organisation-innovative-solutions-towards-net-zero\">develop innovative and reliable evidence-based solutions<\/a> exploiting EO data, enabling policy makers and the civil society to address social\/environmental\/economic policies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The African Research Fellowship aims to achieve this objective by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>R&amp;D activities<\/strong>\u00a0undertaken by the <a title=\"Climate Change Negotiations for Young African Negotiators Online Course\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-negotiations-for-young-african-negotiators-online-course\">young African<\/a> researchers with focus on major African challenges and knowledge gaps, which may support Africa and global environmental and development agendas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exploiting ICT capabilities<\/strong>\u00a0that help to maximise the use of Earth Observation data available over the continent, and promoting an open science approach where sharing data, results and knowledge is at the core of the <a title=\"Value chain development for selected forest-based products to enhance community livelihoods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/value-chain-development-for-selected-forest-based-products-to-enhance-community-livelihoods\">value chain<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"RESEARCH_AREAS\">RESEARCH AREAS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Candidates shall propose a 1-year R&amp;D proposal contributing to\u00a0<strong>Water <a title=\"New degree programme \u2013 Bachelor of Science Bee Resources Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/bachelor-of-science-bee-resources-management\">resources management\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>Food security\u00a0<\/strong>issues. Proposals focusing on smallholder needs (e.g.\u00a0farming, agricultural water use, regenerative agriculture, water productivity, irrigation systems, nutrients management, infestations\u2026) or\u00a0related to coastal processes (e.g. ecosystems,\u00a0coastal waters, coastal geomorphology and change, coastal urbanization, tourism\u2026) and\u00a0fisheries (e.g. aquaculture, <a title=\"Habitat suitability modelling and conservation implications for threatened Tanzania\u2019s puku antelope, Kobusvardonii in Kilombero valley, Tanzania (2014-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/habitat-suitability-modelling-and-conservation-implications-for-threatened-tanzania-s-puku-antelope-kobusvardonii-in-kilombero-valley-tanzania-2014-2015\">habitat suitability<\/a>, blooms, implications of climate change\u2026)\u00a0are especially welcome.<\/p>\n<p>The activity will be coordinated and aligned with the EO AFRICA R&amp;D Initiative which provide training opportunities and scientific tools for the <a title=\"Consultancy services on assessment of forest planning and management in different forest types in selected African countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/consultancy-services-on-assessment-of-forest-planning-and-management-in-different-forest-types-in-selected-african-countries\">selected African<\/a> research fellows. The EO AFRICA Space Academy and its Digital Campus will give access to a wide range of expertise and knowledge to be shared with <a title=\"Assistant Research Fellow (Natural Resources Management)(Re-Advertised) \u2013 2 Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/assistant-research-fellow-natural-resources-managementre-advertised-2-post\">research fellows<\/a>. Whereas the EO <a title=\"Call for Concept Notes for Regional Innovation Collaboration Projects in eastern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-concept-notes-for-regional-innovation-collaboration-projects-in-eastern-africa\">AFRICA Innovation Lab will allow the African research fellows directly collaborate<\/a> with European scientists and implement their research ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The needed documents to apply are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research Proposal (see template)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CV with most recent publication list. It allowed me using new Earth Observation technologies to analyse the shortage of water resources in Morocco. Indeed, I used the \u201cInnovation Lab\u201d of the EO Africa R&amp;D facility, to access and process a large dataset of <a title=\"Training on Remote Sensing and GIS-based analysis for land cover change assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/training-on-remote-sensing-and-gis-based-analysis-for-land-cover-change-assessment\">remote sensing<\/a> data. Then, after several exchanges and discussions with EO experts in ESRIN, I analysed the outputs and explained the potential sources of the water crisis in Morocco. The ARF <a title=\"Field practical training on entomology \u2013 hands-on learning experience with insects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-on-entomology-hands-on-learning-experience-with-insects\">experience allowed me also learning<\/a> about the workings of ESA, their politics and adding so many incredible individuals to my network of colleagues and friends.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wassim M. Baba<\/p>\n<p><em>Through ARF fellowship, my first four months at ESRIN has been a huge learning curve. EO AFRICA initiative has a robust <a title=\"International Environmental Governance Capacity Building\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/international-environmental-governance-capacity-building\">capacity building<\/a> programs that immediately introduced me to new methods and datasets that I could adopt in my own research, learn how to code in python, and work with cloud computing platform.
