The programme is aimed at young scientists who are getting established in their country or are about to return home to an academic position. Under this scheme, grants can be awarded for <a title=\"On-Going Research projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/on-going-research-projects\">research projects<\/a> in Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Information Computer Technology, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Physics to Principal Investigators in the African countries lagging in science and technology identified by TWAS, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI)<\/strong>\u00a0aims to support early-career scientists in <a title=\"BID call for proposals: Sub-Saharan Africa 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/bid-call-for-proposals-sub-saharan-africa-2020\">Sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>, with particular emphasis on Least Developed Countries (LDCs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI)<\/strong>\u00a0is fully funded by\u00a0<strong>The German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Programme Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SG-NAPI<\/strong>\u00a0Grants are awarded to high-level promising <a title=\"FSP 300 Research Project I: Research Methods and Proposal development\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fsp-300-research-project-i-research-methods-and-proposal-development\">research projects<\/a> in\u00a0<strong>Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Information Computer Technology, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Physics\u00a0<\/strong>carried out by Principal Investigators (PI) in the African countries lagging in science and technology identified by TWAS.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Research Grants 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-2023-2\">Research Grants<\/a> to research units amount to a maximum of USD 67,700.<\/li>\n<li>The grants, which are normally provided for a period of 24 months, may be used to purchase scientific equipment, consumables, which can include fieldwork partially and maintenance of equipment and specialized literature (textbooks and proceedings only). <a title=\"Training &amp; Travel Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/training-travel-grants\">The\u00a0<strong>grant does not cover salaries<\/strong>\u00a0of the Principal Investigator or travel<\/a> expenses unless they are clearly related to one of the conference and\/or mobility components mentioned below. Please note that the\u00a0<strong>purchase of fuel, fees for experts or consultants, laptops, tablets, drones and laboratory animals<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>not supported<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Awarded PIs may also <a title=\"Local Project Support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/local-project-support\">support MSc student as part of the project<\/a>, request funding for international conference grant, industrial link grant, mobility grant and open access publication grant.\u00a0<strong>Full details of each component are laid out in the guidelines<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The programme has an additional component which seeks to enhance the productivity of female scientists returning to academia after a maternity leave,\u00a0<em>scientist-after-child<\/em>\u00a0grant. Full details of this component can be found in the guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applying\u00a0<em>Principal Investigators<\/em>\u00a0must be nationals of an eligible country, who holds a <a title=\"PhD Research Scholarship 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-research-scholarship-2020\">PhD and has good research<\/a> experience. The <a title=\"Call for proposals to support Africa\u2019s Science Granting Councils in funding and managing research and innovation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-to-support-africas-science-granting-councils-in-funding-and-managing-research-and-innovation\">grant should operate within a university or a research institution in one of the African countries lagging in science<\/a> and technology.<\/li>\n<li>The PI must be 40 or under. Any applicant turning 41 in the year of application is not eligible.<\/li>\n<li>The PI must have obtained their Ph.D. within the last 5 years in a country other than their home country.<\/li>\n<li>The PI must have returned to their home country (refer to list in the guidelines) within the last 36 months or will return home before the end of 2023.<\/li>\n<li>The PI must hold, be offered or be in the process of accepting a position at an <a title=\"Academic Staff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/staff\/academic\">academic<\/a> and\/or research institution (including international research centers) in their home country.<\/li>\n<li>The PI <a title=\"Employment Vacancies at Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/employment-vacancies-at-mbeya-university-of-science-and-technology-must\">must be national of an eligible African country that is lagging in science and technology<\/a> (refer to list in the giudelines).<\/li>\n<li>Applicant must at the time of application NOT have an active <a title=\"Research Grants 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-2023\">research grant<\/a> with TWAS or OWSD Early Career Women Scientists (ECWS) Fellowship.<\/li>\n<li>Applications from women scientists and those working in Least Developed Countries are especially encouraged.<\/li>\n<li>The applicant must submit a strong Research Proposal, you may find further information on how to write a strong proposal by visiting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.authoraid.info\/en\/resources\/?topic=Grant+proposal+writing&amp;language=English\">AuthorAID<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Please be advised that <a title=\"Applications for Admission into Masters and PhD programmes for the Academic Year 2018\/2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/applications-for-admission-into-masters-and-phd-programmes-for-the-academic-year-2018-2019\">applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year<\/a> in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunities\/visiting-scientist\">Visiting Scientists<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunities\/visiting-scientist\/professors\">Visiting Professor<\/a>\u00a0programmes. One exception: The head of an institution who\u00a0<em>invites\u00a0<\/em>an external scholar to share his\/her expertise under the TWAS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunities\/visiting-scientist\/professors\">Visiting Professor<\/a>\u00a0programme or the TWAS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunity\/twas-visiting-expert-programme\">Visiting Expert<\/a>\u00a0programme may still apply for another programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If selected, a trilateral written agreement is drawn up between TWAS, the Principal Investigator and the home institution. The institution undertakes to administer the grant according to the agreement and to provide laboratory space, salaries and other facilities necessary for the project. Equipment, consumables and literature provided for the project through the SG-NAPI <a title=\"CALL FOR PROPOSALS: GEF SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-gef-small-grants-programme\">grant programme<\/a> remain the property of the home institution after the project is completed.<\/li>\n<li>In general, the grant funds are kept at TWAS for the purchase of items requested by the grant holder. TWAS places the orders with the supplier(s) upon receipt of proforma invoices submitted by the grant holder in accordance with the approved itemized budget.<\/li>\n<li>The agreement will also provide details on how to activate other benefits of the <a title=\"Research Support Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-support-grants\">grant such as support<\/a> for MSc students, international conference grant, industrial link grant, mobility grant, open access publication grant and\u00a0<em>scientist-after-child<\/em>\u00a0grant.<\/li>\n<li>Grant holders must submit a final report within one year from the date of the last purchase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Ensure that you have read and fully understood the guidelines.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>SG-NAPI grant applications, once the call opens will need to be submitted online by clicking on the\u00a0<strong>\u201cApply Now\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0link at the bottom of this page.\u00a0<em>Please note the link will only be active once the call opens and not before (or after it is closed).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Please note that a researcher may only submit one application at a time and for only one kind of grant (as an\u00a0<a title=\"TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences: Individuals\" href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunity\/twas-research-grants-programme-basic-sciences-individuals\">individual applicant<\/a>, as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunity\/twas-research-grants-programme-basic-sciences-groups\">research unit<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twas.org\/opportunity\/isdb-twas-research-grant\"><strong>IsDB\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><strong>or the OWSD Early Career Women Scientists (ECWS) Fellowship).
