Creating protected areas, green and blue infrastructure, restoring ecosystems, rewilding and facilitating nature-based solutions to climate change can all contribute to reversing biodiversity loss in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Many vital species, habitats and ecosystems in Europe are threatened by\u00a0<strong>urban sprawl, unsustainable farming and forestry, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/in-depth\/pollution\">pollution<\/a><\/strong>. Roads, railways, urban areas and agricultural land fragment Europe\u2019s landscape, hindering the movement of species.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/signals\/signals-2021\/infographics\/state-of-nature-in-europe-habitats\/image\/image_view_fullscreen\">EEA\u2019s report State of Nature in the EU 2020,<\/a>\u00a0only 15% of Europe\u2019s habitats and 27% protected species are in a\u00a0<strong>good conservation status.\u00a0<\/strong>We need an overhaul of our key systems, including agriculture and production, in order to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity and ensure that nature continues to provide vital ecosystem services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU nature directives\u2014such as the <a title=\"Grants for Research on Neotropical Birds\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grants-for-research-on-neotropical-birds\">Birds<\/a> and the Habitats Directives\u2014offer protection to around 2000 species and habitats. At the heart of EU conservation efforts is the EU\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Natura 2000 network<\/strong>\u00a0of <a title=\"Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/creating-new-protected-areas\">protected areas<\/a>, which currently makes up\u00a0<strong>18% of the EU\u2019s land area<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>10% of its marine territory<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nature protection<\/strong>\u00a0needs to be complemented by\u00a0<strong>nature restoration\u00a0<\/strong>efforts, through actions such as removing barriers on rivers and rewilding. To this end, the European Commission has proposed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/nature-and-biodiversity\/nature-restoration-law_en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nature Restoration Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A healthy <a title=\"Postdoc \u2013 3D Modeling and Virtual Reality Creation of Natural Forest Environments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/postdoc-3d-modeling-and-virtual-reality-creation-of-natural-forest-environments\">natural environment<\/a> can also provide us solutions. Some of the\u00a0<strong>impacts of <\/strong><a title=\"Public Awareness on Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/public-awareness-on-climate-change-2\">climate change<\/a>, such as heat islands and urban flooding, can be mitigated through\u00a0<strong>nature-based solutions<\/strong>, including green spaces in cities.<\/p>\n<p>The EEA monitors the state of nature based on the data submitted under nature directives. Member States submit, among other things, extensive <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Data Papers on Freshwater Species\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-data-papers-on-freshwater-species\">information on habitats and species<\/a> every six years. According to our latest assessments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ui bulleted list\" role=\"list\">\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\">Only 27% of\u00a0<strong>protected species<\/strong><a title=\"Species Conservation Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/species-conservation-grant\">\u00a0indicate a good conservation<\/a> status, whilst 63% have a poor or bad status. <a title=\"Amphibian and Reptile Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/amphibian-and-reptile-conservation\">Reptiles and vascular plants have the highest proportion of good conservation<\/a> status.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\">On average, 6% of all species assessments (mostly mammals, vascular plants and fish) show an\u00a0<strong>improving trend<\/strong>\u00a0in conservation status.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\"><strong>Agricultural activities<\/strong>\u00a0were the most frequently reported pressures that had a negative impact on the state of species.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\">15% of\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Habitat suitability modelling and conservation implications for threatened Tanzania\u2019s puku antelope, Kobusvardonii in Kilombero valley, Tanzania (2014-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/habitat-suitability-modelling-and-conservation-implications-for-threatened-tanzania-s-puku-antelope-kobusvardonii-in-kilombero-valley-tanzania-2014-2015\">habitats\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>have a good conservation status, with 81% having poor (45%) or bad (36%) conservation status at EU level.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\"><a title=\"FO 616 Forest Tree Improvement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fo-616-forest-tree-improvement\"><strong>Forests<\/strong>\u00a0exhibit the most improving<\/a> trends. The highest number of deteriorating trends is that for grasslands, dune habitats and bogs, mires and fens.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/ims\/marine-protected-areas-in-europes-seas\">Marine protected area coverage<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0more than doubled, to 12.1%, between 2012 and 2021. However, efforts will need to increase significantly to achieve the EU <a title=\"Biodiversity on a Changing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-on-a-changing-planet\">biodiversity<\/a> strategy target of protecting at least 30% of EU seas by 2030, while also ensuring that all protected areas are effectively managed.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" role=\"listitem\">The\u00a0<strong>biodiversity strategy for 2030\u00a0<\/strong>aims to restore at least 25,000 km of free-flowing rivers by 2030 by removing barriers, constructing bypasses for migrating fish and re-establishing sediment flow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"eight wide computer twelve wide mobile eight wide tablet column column-blocks-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"styled-tabs_block styled\">\n<div id=\"38b81c58-6367-4eaa-b5e6-ced0cd302e37\" class=\"tabs-block accordion light flex-start\">\n<div class=\"styled-tab styled\">\n<div tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tab\">\n<div class=\"RRT__container\">\n<div id=\"panel-e3e6b879-fef4-4a88-9436-5f0064698270\" class=\"RRT__panel ui bottom attached segment tab active\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"tab-e3e6b879-fef4-4a88-9436-5f0064698270\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"rah-static rah-static--height-auto\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div>\n<p>Along with the Birds and the Habitats Directives, the\u00a0<strong>EU <a title=\"Mapping of the remaining un-protected natural forests and assessment of their resources and threats as a roadmap to conserve eastern afromontane biodiversity hotspot in Ludewa, Tanzania (2015-2016).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/2-mapping-of-the-remaining-un-protected-natural-forests-and-assessment-of-their-resources-and-threats-as-a-roadmap-to-conserve-eastern-afromontane-biodiversity-hotspot-in-ludewa-tanzania-2015-2016\">biodiversity strategy<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for 2030 plays a central role in protecting nature in Europe. The <a title=\"Request for Proposal on Analysis of Public Sector Climate, Forest, and Land Use Strategies and Determination of Investment Readiness Score\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/request-for-proposal-on-analysis-of-public-sector-climate-forest-and-land-use-strategies-and-determination-of-investment-readiness-score\">strategy aims to\u00a0<strong>increase the protected area<\/strong>\u00a0to at least 30% of EU land<\/a> and 30% of surrounding seas by 2030. One-third of this, areas of very high <a title=\"Call for MSc and PhD Applications 2020\/2021 \u2013 Africa Center of Excellence for Climate Smart Agriculture and Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-msc-and-phd-applications-2020-2021-africa-center-of-excellence-for-climate-smart-agriculture-and-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity and climate<\/a> value, should be under strict protection. Primary and old-growth forests and other carbon-rich <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystems<\/a> like peatlands and grasslands will be the focus of strict protection.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy also calls for\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Forest ecosystem restoration in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-ecosystem-restoration-in-tanzania\">restoring ecosystems<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and planting additional trees to support biodiversity and ecosystem restoration. <a title=\"Call for Proposals \u2013 Forest Management Planning for Village Land Forest Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-forest-management-planning-for-village-land-forest-reserves\">More\u00a0<strong>forests<\/strong>\u00a0will also be managed<\/a> to promote biodiversity-friendly practices.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the <a title=\"European Commission \u2014 Awareness Raising in Renewable Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-commission-awareness-raising-in-renewable-energy\">European Commission<\/a> proposed the\u00a0<strong>Nature Restoration Law,<\/strong>\u00a0which takes a holistic approach to restore all EU land and sea. The first milestone is set for 2030 when 20% of all EU land and sea must be under restoration measures, while the ultimate target is for 2050 when all EU land and sea in need of restoration must be under restoration measures.<\/p>\n<p>Other initiatives include the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/themes\/biodiversity\/green-infrastructure\/building-a-coherent-trans-european\">trans-European nature network<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/bern-convention\/emerald-network\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emerald Network<\/a>\u00a0by the Council of Europe, to which the EU contributes via Natura 2000 sites.<\/p>\n<p>The EEA regularly assesses the state of nature in Europe, including <a title=\"Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund \u2014 Grants in Support of Endangered and Critically Endangered Species\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/mohamed-bin-zayed-species-conservation-fund-grants-in-support-of-endangered-and-critically-endangered-species\">conservation status of key habitats and species<\/a>, as well as assessments on protected areas and on other topics such as landscape connectivity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"styled-callToActionBlock secondary right has--align--right has--theme--secondary align styled\">\n<div class=\"block call-to-action align right\"><a class=\"ui button secondary\" title=\"See the EU policies we support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/about\/policy-corner-eu-policies-we-support\">See the EU policies we support<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"four wide computer twelve wide mobile four wide tablet column column-blocks-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"styled-accordion secondary has--backgroundColor--ffffff has--theme--secondary styled styled-with-bg\">\n<div class=\"accordion-block\">\n<div class=\"accordion ui secondary\">\n<div class=\"title accordion-title align-arrow-right\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe has set ambitious policy goals to allow nature to recover and flourish.
