{"id":6051,"date":"2023-04-11T01:10:55","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T22:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=6051"},"modified":"2023-04-11T01:56:18","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T22:56:18","slug":"prince-albert-ii-of-monaco-foundation-pelagos-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prince-albert-ii-of-monaco-foundation-pelagos-initiative","title":{"rendered":"Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation: Pelagos Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Covering 87,500 km2 between France, Monaco and Italy, the Pelagos Sanctuary is the first transboundary area in the Mediterranean dedicated to the protection of marine mammals. The area, particularly rich in plankton, is home to a remarkable biodiversity, including several species of whales and dolphins.<\/p>\n<p>The Pelagos initiative was launched in 2021 by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (PA2F), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas Network (MedPAN). This partnership between some of the key civil society players in the Mediterranean funds and promotes activities for the protection, conservation and awareness of the Sanctuary, with the goal to <a title=\"REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR HIGHER DEGREES TO SUPPORT ONLINE TRAINING AND MANAGEMENT OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AT SUA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/regulations-and-guidelines-for-higher-degrees-to-support-online-training-and-management-of-postgraduate-studies-at-sua\">support the implementation of the management<\/a> plan of the Pelagos Agreement, established by the three countries responsible for the Sanctuary: France, Italy and Monaco.<\/p>\n<p>The Mediterranean basin has been identified as climate-risk hotspot by the IPCC, with air and sea temperatures rising faster than in other regions, and with increasingly frequent marine heat waves, droughts and coastal flooding. When effectively managed, Marine Protected Areas can act as nature-based solutions, increasing the resilience of marine organisms and ecosystems to <a title=\"Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/climate-change\">climate change<\/a>. The higher the protection, the better will organisms and <a title=\"Ecosystem Services\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystem-services\">ecosystems be able to cope and continue to sustain productive fishing grounds and other ecosystem services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to protecting ecosystems, restoring degraded habitats, including blue carbon ecosystems such as Posidonia seagrass beds, can be part of the solution to <a title=\"Adaptation to Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/adaptation-to-climate-change\">adapt to climate change<\/a>. More recently, the value of preserving large marine mammals such as whales has been put forward in the <a title=\"AFF Community of Practice on \u2018advancing women in African forestry in the context of climate change\u2019\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/aff-community-of-practice-on-advancing-women-in-african-forestry-in-the-context-of-climate-change\">context of climate change<\/a>. A whale could sequester up to 33 tons of CO2 during its lifetime, and the average value of a whale in terms of <a title=\"Training on applied ethnobotany and the use of payments for ecosystem services\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/training-on-applied-ethnobotany-and-the-use-of-payments-for-ecosystem-services\">ecosystem services<\/a> has been estimated at 2 million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Within the framework of the Pelagos Initiative, the UBS Optimus Foundation and UBS Monaco are joining forces with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to support projects within the Sanctuary with a specific focus on climate action.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Themes of the \u201cClimate Action\u201d call for projects:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This call for projects encourages submissions of projects that may include knowledge acquisition, conservation and restauration measures, lobbying\/advocacy or <a title=\"European Commission \u2014 Awareness Raising in Renewable Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-commission-awareness-raising-in-renewable-energy\">awareness raising<\/a> projects. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowledge acquisition:\n<ul>\n<li>Potential for blue carbon-based <a title=\"Managing the Eastern Arc Mountain forests for Carbon credits and emission trading; Local knowledge and climate change adaptation project (2007 \u2013 to date).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/managing-the-eastern-arc-mountain-forests-for-carbon-credits-and-emission-trading-local-knowledge-and-climate-change-adaptation-project-2007-to-date\">adaptation to climate change<\/a> in the Sanctuary (e.g. mapping of <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystems<\/a>, development of methodology for assessment\/quantification\/certification of blue carbon ecosystems and\/or cetaceans);<\/li>\n<li>Impacts of <a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> on marine mammal populations and their habitats within the Pelagos Sanctuary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Conservation and <a title=\"Restoring a transitional cloud forest in Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-a-transitional-cloud-forest-in-costa-rica\">restoration<\/a> measures:\n<ul>\n<li>Direct protection of whales (e.g., geolocation of whales by acoustics or artificial intelligence to avoid collisions, measures to avoid by-catch);<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of the impact of maritime traffic (e.g., speed limits, use of alternative fuels);<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of other stressors, such as noise pollution, to increase the resilience of cetaceans to <a title=\"Public Awareness on Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/public-awareness-on-climate-change-2\">climate<\/a> change;<\/li>\n<li>Protection and\/or <a title=\"Forest ecosystem restoration in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-ecosystem-restoration-in-tanzania\">restoration of ecosystems<\/a> within the Sanctuary, such as Posidonia seagrass beds (e.g., installation of ecological moorings).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Lobbying\/advocacy:\n<ul>\n<li>Assessment of and lobbying actions to reduce overfishing, bycatch and destructive fishing, such as bottom trawling;<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of and advocacy actions around harmful subsidies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Awareness-raising actions:\n<ul>\n<li>Development of tools and activities to raise awareness about climate change and climate action in the Pelagos Sanctuary;<\/li>\n<li>Development of tools and activities to raise awareness about blue carbon as a <a title=\"Unlocking the potential of bamboo and rattan as nature-based solution to tackle plastic pollution\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unlocking-the-potential-of-bamboo-and-rattan-as-nature-based-solution-to-tackle-plastic-pollution\">potential nature-based solution<\/a> in the Pelagos Sanctuary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Coordinating Committee will select projects according to the criteria below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Call for Project Proposal: Access to Renewable Energy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-proposal-access-to-renewable-energy\">Projects must be consistent with the themes of the call<\/a> for projects above;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Vacancy: Research Project Manager\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacancy-research-project-manager\">Projects that show a clear contribution to the implementation of the management<\/a> plan of the Pelagos Agreement (2022-2027) will be prioritized;<\/li>\n<li>Projects must be located within the Pelagos Sanctuary. Priority will be given to projects covering at least 2 countries that are signatories to the Agreement;<\/li>\n<li>Priority will be given to <a title=\"ONLINE COURSE: Designing Conservation Projects and Measuring Impact\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/online-course-designing-conservation-projects-and-measuring-impact\">projects which contain measurable<\/a> mitigation and adaptation outcomes;<\/li>\n<li>Priority will be given to <a title=\"Local Project Support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/local-project-support\">projects actively engaging\/involving local<\/a> communities;<\/li>\n<li>Priority will be given to projects aiming to create synergies (between countries, between MPAs, between themes, between actors&#8230;);<\/li>\n<li>Possible support ranges from 100 000\u20ac and 300 000\u20ac per project;<\/li>\n<li>Typical project duration should be 3 years;<\/li>\n<li>The financial <a title=\"Research Support Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-support-grants\">support granted<\/a> should not exceed 75% of the total budget of the project (projects with a minimum co-financing of 25% will be prioritized);<\/li>\n<li>Start date of projects: first quarter of 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Project selection process and timeline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submission of pre-application form: between\u00a0<strong>21 March and 21 May 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Selected projects will be notified by the end of June. <a title=\"African Elephant Conservation Fund invites project proposal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/african-elephant-conservation-fund-invites-project-proposal\">Project leads will be invited<\/a> to submit a complete application form, including a detailed budget, by\u00a0<strong>15 September 2023<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Selected <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) invites proposals for project funding\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-gbif-invites-proposals-for-project-funding\">projects will be considered for funding<\/a> starting from the first quarter of 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>To apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please download and complete the Pre-application form.<\/p>\n<p>The application must be sent before\u00a0<strong><u>21 May 2023<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>\u200bHow to submit your project:<\/h3>\n<h2>1.
