{"id":6293,"date":"2023-05-04T12:47:31","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T09:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=6293"},"modified":"2023-05-04T12:47:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T09:47:33","slug":"study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change","title":{"rendered":"Study finds simple, cheap way to use forests to slow global climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of the Sunshine Coast Professor Jack (Francis) Putz is so buoyed by the finding that he and nine international co-authors have called for all countries with\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/tropical+forests\/\" rel=\"tag\">tropical forests<\/a>\u2014including Australia\u2014to include the simple practice in their national carbon policies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we are to scale\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/natural+climate+solutions\/\" rel=\"tag\">natural climate solutions<\/a>\u00a0at the pace needed to avoid a global climate catastrophe, we need effective, low-cost, no-regrets practices that can be implemented immediately,&#8221; said the Professor of Forest Ecology and Management who recently joined UniSC to continue his work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This research shows why we should cut lianas (woody climbing vines) and suggests how government and\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/private+landowners\/\" rel=\"tag\">private landowners<\/a>\u00a0can do it, to achieve benefits for the environment and the economy via the timber industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Widespread adoption of liana removal is more likely if it is incorporated into national carbon policy frameworks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Putz was senior author on a paper published on the research in\u00a0<i>Forest Ecology and Management<\/i>\u00a0with his previous University of Florida, as well as The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, Eastwood Forests in the United States and Science for Sustainability in Central America.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lianas are great in some ways, but they compete with trees and other vegetation for sunlight,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Liana infestations affect a quarter of the world&#8217;s one billion hectares of selectively logged forest, primarily in the tropics, and this is intensifying with human interventions and\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/climate+change\/\" rel=\"tag\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our research found that cutting lianas from a minimal number of trees destined for harvest\u2014just five trees per hectare\u2014would increase\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/carbon+sequestration\/\" rel=\"tag\">carbon sequestration<\/a>\u00a0and contribute to timber yields to improve local livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a title=\"Research Assistant Manager (Forester)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-assistant-manager-forester\">&#8220;Forest managers<\/a> with access to voluntary carbon markets could also diversify their incomes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the cost of the treatment estimated at less than $USD1 per ton of CO2, it&#8217;s an attractive opportunity for <a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">countries to both meet their climate action<\/a> goals and\u2014given current carbon market prices of $10\u201320 per ton of CO2\u2014boost the economic potential of selectively logged forests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said the same treatment could also benefit <a title=\"Biodiversity on a Changing Planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-on-a-changing-planet\">biodiversity<\/a> in forests not destined for logging.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mt-4 article-main\">\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div style=\"box-sizing: border-box; --tw-border-spacing-x: 0; --tw-border-spacing-y: 0; --tw-translate-x: 0; --tw-translate-y: 0; --tw-rotate: 0; --tw-skew-x: 0; --tw-skew-y: 0; --tw-scale-x: 1; --tw-scale-y: 1; --tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; --tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-color: rgb(59 130 246 \/ 0.5); --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000;\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2023\/study-finds-simple-che.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2023\/study-finds-simple-che.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: &lt;i&gt;Forest Ecology and Management&lt;\/i&gt; (2023).
