Communities that suffered the direct effects of conflict are disproportionately impacted, with the most vulnerable far from ready to adapt to climate change\u2019s effects.<\/p>\n<p>In Yemen, it is not uncommon for people to flee their homes seeking safety from conflict, only to then leave their new location because the land cannot be farmed.<\/p>\n<p>Three out of four Yemenis rely on agriculture and livestock for their survival, and the <a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climate<\/a> crisis is pushing communities already reeling from eight years of conflict to the breaking point.<\/p>\n<p>Yemeni <a title=\"Enhancement of local farmers\u2019 adaptive capacity to climate stresses, livelihoods and biodiversity conservation through introduction of proven mushroom cultivation and preservation technologies in villages adjacent to Kilombero nature reserve in Kilombero\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/enhancement-of-local-farmers-adaptive-capacity-to-climate-stresses-livelihoods-and-biodiversity-conservation-through-introduction-of-proven-mushroom-cultivation-and-preservation-technologies-in-vill-2\">farmers have seen their livelihoods<\/a> destroyed by extreme drought, devastating flooding, and grinding conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis now-empty dam used to nourish our land. The consecutive dry seasons badly harmed farmers,\u201d said Yasser, who is from Abyan, Yemen. \u201cMany farmers had to leave their jobs and look for other work, as cultivating the land is no longer enough to sustain the basic needs of the families.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u2018We have been living here for generations. These areas were marshes full of <a title=\"Water, Climate, and Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/water-climate-and-biodiversity\">water<\/a> and the lands were fertile. We used to farm all year. Today it\u2019s a total desert\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Desertification affects 39 per cent of Iraq\u2019s territory, and in recent years the sustainability of the agricultural sector has been undermined by many factors, including the aftermath of conflict, water scarcity, increasingly rising temperatures, frequent droughts, and dust storms. As a result, communities residing in areas once known for agricultural activities are now struggling to survive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been living here for generations. These areas were marshes full of <a title=\"Capacity building on forest conservation and management of water sources in mount Lugala and mount Mosi village land forest reserves in Iringa Rural District (2013-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/capacity-building-on-forest-conservation-and-management-of-water-sources-in-mount-lugala-and-mount-mosi-village-land-forest-reserves-in-iringa-rural-district-2013-2015\">water and the lands<\/a> were fertile. We used to farm all year. Today it\u2019s a total desert,\u201d said Riyadh, who is from Al Qadasiya district in southern Iraq.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation: Pelagos Initiative\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prince-albert-ii-of-monaco-foundation-pelagos-initiative\">Climate action<\/a> remains extremely weak in areas affected by armed conflict. Humanitarian actors can play a key role in enabling conflict-affected countries and populations to bear the combined <a title=\"FBL 204: Ecological Impact Assessment and Environmental Planning\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbl-204-ecological-impact-assessment-and-environmental-planning\">impacts of environmental<\/a>, climate and conflict impacts on human health. To reach that it is imperative to invest in <a title=\"European School of Sustainability Science and Research- Doctoral Programme on Climate Change Adaptation by Publications\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-school-of-sustainability-science-and-research-doctoral-programme-on-climate-change-adaptation-by-publications\">adaptation programmes<\/a> that address needs across sectors.<\/p>\n<p>In a just-released report,\u00a0<em>Making Adaptation Work: Addressing the compounding impacts of <a title=\"Selling war amid climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/selling-war-amid-climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, environmental degradation and conflict in the Near and Middle East<\/em>, the ICRC and Norwegian Red Cross identified some of the major dynamics impacting the most vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n<p>The report also identifies opportunities as well as barriers to support <a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">climate adaptation and community resilience<\/a> in areas affected by armed conflict in the region. The report was <a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">developed with technical assistance from the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate<\/a> Centre.<\/p>\n<p><em>Saif Saleh, in Al-Hawta, Yemen, told the ICRC: \u201cI am 76 and I have never seen such heat as we see today. We are at war now. We move from one place to another, and after five years I came back to my house which I had abandoned and it has suffered from heavy rains \u2013 living in it is a hazard.
