That the ridges on whales\u2019 fins that create an aerodynamic flow in water inspired the shape of the modern wind turbine? That termites drilling holes in their mounds to cool down in the desert summers influenced a method for designing more energy-efficient buildings?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Biomimicry\u00a0has long been one of my favorite growing areas of science and <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2022\">sustainability \u2014<\/a> emulating models, systems or elements of nature to solve complex human problems. After all, mother nature has been around a lot longer than humans; she has a lot to teach us. So, as a specialist focused on\u00a0solar <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energy<\/a>, I\u2019ve often wondered what nature can teach us about how to capture our power from the sun. Enter solar tree<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"what_are_solar_trees\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What Are Solar Trees?<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A solar tree is a device resembling a tree in shape, but with photovoltaic (PV) panels in place of its crown. The \u201cleaves\u201d of the <a title=\"What we owe our trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/what-we-owe-our-trees\">tree<\/a> capture solar energy and convert it to electricity, with branches funneling that electricity down through a trunk and into a central battery within. In essence, they provide the same benefits as solar panels, but they use only a fraction of the surface area necessary for an array of solar panels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Solar trees are not a new invention, but they\u2019re enjoying a rising popularity. Most of our readers may recognize the most iconic solar trees in Singapore\u2019s stunning Gardens By the Bay, as seen in productions like Crazy Rich Asians and The Bachelor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As they exist today, more solar trees raise public awareness around sustainability than are used to generate residential or commercial power. What\u2019s more, the <a title=\"Researcher in Applied Entomology in Fruit Trees for the Sustainable Plant Protection Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-in-applied-entomology-in-fruit-trees-for-the-sustainable-plant-protection-program\">trees are still perceived as \u201cfuturistic,\u201d but it might be time we start shifting our mindset about these inventions by incorporating them into our vision of what sustainability<\/a> looks like in practice. Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"benefits_of_solar_trees\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Benefits of Solar Trees<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">At first glance, solar trees might seem impractical \u2014 more art than function when compared to the best solar panels. But solar trees offer a few surprising benefits over their\u00a0ground-mounted\u00a0counterparts, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Solar trees preserve land:<\/strong>\u00a0Since solar trees are\u00a0<strong>vertically integrated,\u00a0<\/strong>they require significantly less land than\u00a0solar farms. The same logic would apply to a high-rise being able to fit more residents than a one-story house. Plus, because of their greater heights, the panels may receive more sunlight than a ground-mounted or roof-mounted arrangement would.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They can provide habitat for rare flora and fauna:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0Solar trees like those in Singapore\u2019s Gardens By the Bay are large enough to host tropical flowers, vines and plants on its trunk and branches. These valuable habitats\u00a0<\/span>provide homes for plants and animals<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, <a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\">protecting biodiversity in urban areas<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Solar trees require little maintenance:\u00a0<\/strong>Besides\u00a0cleaning debris off the solar panels\u00a0every now and then, solar trees are standalone electrical units requiring little to no maintenance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The <a title=\"TREE Fund \u2014 Funding for Arboriculture and Urban Forestry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tree-fund-funding-for-arboriculture-and-urban-forestry\">trees cool heat islands:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>By creating shade in urban environments, solar trees reduce the\u00a0amount of thermal energy\u00a0that is reflected off of urban surfaces like asphalt, concrete and brick. This can combat the most deadly <a title=\"GMES &amp; Africa Strengthens Synergy with PolicyMakers to Address Climate Change Effects through EO Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/gmes-africa-strengthens-synergy-with-policymakers-to-address-climate-change-effects-through-eo-technologies\">effects of climate change<\/a> within cities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>They increase awareness of <a title=\"Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund \u2014 Clean Energy Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/africa-enterprise-challenge-fund-clean-energy-technologies\">clean energy:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>The striking structures are immediate attention-getters, conveying a message of creativity, resourcefulness, humility and the need to incorporate sustainability into everyday life. We see similar art installations at work across the world, such as the\u00a0Terra pavilion in Dubai.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"solar_trees_vs_solar_panels\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Solar Trees Vs. Solar Panels<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">We mentioned that solar trees serve essentially the same purpose as solar panels but require a much smaller footprint to do so. But are there any other significant differences outside the trees\u2019 widespread adoption? Let\u2019s dig in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Efficiency<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a title=\"Solar and Wind Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/solar-and-wind-energy-projects\">Solar panel efficiency\u00a0is a measure of how much energy<\/a> is produced relative to the amount of sunlight that strikes the panels. So, to compare a standard solar array and solar trees in terms of efficiency, we\u2019d need to know the specs of the solar cells used within the tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">However, when it comes to space efficiency, trees take the crown. This solar tree in West Bengal, India produces\u00a0enough energy to power five homes\u00a0in the U.S. Solar trees in Lynn Haven, Florida are capable of\u00a0powering six to seven homes. Instead of using an entire roof to produce this electricity, the trees do so using only\u00a0<strong>a few square feet of ground space.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cost<br \/>\n<\/strong>Since solar trees are still rare in the U.S., the average installation cost is high. According to top solar tree company Spotlight Solar advertises total pricing to be\u00a0$40,000 to $80,000. Based on current average solar costs, you could buy a 15-kW to 30-kW solar panel system (for context, the average home needs a system between 5 kW and 10 kW).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Of course, the complexity and size of the solar tree will influence the final price. Until solar trees reach the commercial mainstream, demand will limit their widespread availability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Storage and Distribution<br \/>\n<\/strong>Solar trees are used to produce electricity that will be used\u00a0<em>onsite<\/em>. Storing and distributing the energy generated by the trees (like solar farms and power plants do) would require larger\u00a0solar batteries\u00a0and complex systems of transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Utility<br \/>\n<\/strong>While solar panels are used primarily on rooftops or mounted on the ground, solar trees offer a different type of utility. In addition to energy, they provide shade and whimsy while taking up minimal surface area. A creative mind could find endless uses for these trees: shade for city sidewalks, parking lots, playgrounds, backyards and more. This brings us to\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span id=\"the_future_of_solar_trees\">The Future of Solar Trees<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The metallic, modern look of solar trees might turn off the average reader, but keep in mind that as the technology improves, investment flows and demand increases, they\u2019ll become much more similar in appearance to real trees or other plants. This modern mimicry will allow us to blend the <a title=\"FO 616 Forest Tree Improvement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fo-616-forest-tree-improvement\">trees into our forests<\/a>, yards, coastlines, parks and cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Apart from residential applications, here are a few of our favorite ideas for the uses of solar trees:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shade along highways or agricultural areas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Artistic installations in public parks, outdoor malls and garden<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Energy sources for carports and parking lots<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Solar trees may still be a few years from the mainstream, but relative to other solar panel alternatives like solar roads, they offer a lot more practical value. The efficiency and versatility of the <a title=\"Collaborative tree improvement expands \u2013 species\/clonal hybrid trials and breeding populations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/collaborative-tree-improvement-expands-species-clonal-hybrid-trials-and-breeding-populations\">trees make them ideal for cities and densely populated<\/a> areas, making us think they will be commonplace sooner than you might expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span id=\"looking_to_plant_a_solar_tree\">Looking to \u201cPlant\u201d a Solar Tree?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The options are still somewhat limited, but there are a number of organizations that can install solar trees throughout the U.S. We\u2019d recommend starting with these companies:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Smartflower<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Smartflower\u00a0offers stunning designs of solar devices in the shapes of trees and sunflowers, with solar petals tracking, opening and closing with the sun for optimal energy conversion. We\u2019re talking about premiere trees here.
