Department of Environmental Management<\/a>\u00a0(DEM).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dem.ri.gov\/natural-resources-bureau\/agriculture-and-forest-environment\/forest-environment\/forest-health-2\">spongy moth<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 formerly called the European gypsy moth \u2014 has wreaked havoc across the state in past years, and it\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking for bare trees, sickly trees, discoloration and stuff like that and that\u2019s usually what cues me in for what I need to look further for an outbreak,\u201d said DEM\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dem.ri.gov\/natural-resources-bureau\/agriculture-and-forest-environment\/forest-environment\/forest-health\">Forest Health Program<\/a> Coordinator Alana Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Russell conducts statewide aerial surveys looking for potential threats to our environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe important thing to consider is monitoring your home and monitoring your population,\u201d she said. \u201cIn order to act on a spongy moth outbreak we need to know we have elevated levels so intervention isn\u2019t always needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spongy moth has been spotted in other states this year, but so far, not may have been seen across the <a title=\"Ocean Reporting Network\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ocean-reporting-network\">Ocean<\/a> State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Instead] we have an abundant pollution of the winter moth \u2013 that\u2019s another <a title=\"Maryland\u2019s top invasive plant species import harm to natives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/marylands-top-invasive-plant-species-import-harm-to-natives\">invasive<\/a> caterpillar from Europe but it feeds a little earlier than spongy moths,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>Winter moths are finishing up their feeding season while spongy moths will continue into late June, according to the DEM.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\"><a class=\"promo-link__link\" href=\"https:\/\/dem.ri.gov\/natural-resources-bureau\/agriculture-and-forest-environment\/forest-environment\/forest-health-2?ipid=promo-link-block2\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\">Additional information on spongy moths<\/a><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Russell is warning homeowners of the types of treatments that could cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of native species that feed on our trees, especially our oak <a title=\"Field Practical Training: Tree nursery management &amp; propagation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-tree-nursery-management-propagation\">trees so if were doing any management<\/a> we could actually be doing harm to our native species,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Another relatively new threat, according to the DEM, is the emerald ash borer \u2014 a beetle that feeds on bark and was first discovered in Rhode Island in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Job Opportunity at WWF, Wildlife Species Expert\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/job-opportunity-at-wwf-wildlife-species-expert\">Experts say that species<\/a> have a natural enemy, the parasitic wasp, which is harmless to humans but deadly to the emerald ash borer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping in the long term we see <a title=\"Mapping small holder\u2019s tree based systems in Rwanda\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/mapping-small-holders-tree-based-systems-in-rwanda\">small ash trees<\/a> recover with these beneficial wasps that attack the emerald ash borer,\u201d Russell said. \u201cNot all the activity you see on our trees is bad activity it\u2019s all a part of a healthy ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some invasive species are putting our local forests at risk, according to the\u00a0R.I.
