Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun\u2019s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2021\/08\/09\/ar6-wg1-20210809-pr\/\">human activities have been the main driver of climate change<\/a>, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p>Burning fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun\u2019s heat and raising temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>The main greenhouse gases that are causing climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. These come from using gasoline for driving a car or coal for heating a building, for example. Clearing land and cutting down forests can also release <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon<\/a> dioxide. Agriculture, oil and gas operations are major sources of methane <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">emissions<\/a>. Energy, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and land use are among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/interactive\/six-sector-solution-climate-change\/\">main sectors<\/a>\u00a0causing greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/2021\/08\/feeling-the-heat.jpg\" alt=\"The Earth is feeling the heat.\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Humans are responsible for global warming<br \/>\n<\/strong>Climate scientists have showed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/downloads\/outreach\/IPCC_AR6_WGI_SummaryForAll.pdf\">humans are responsible<\/a>\u00a0for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years. Human activities like the ones mentioned above are causing greenhouse gases that are warming the world faster than at any time in at least the last two thousand years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2021\/08\/09\/ar6-wg1-20210809-pr\/\">The average temperature of the Earth\u2019s surface is now about 1.1\u00b0C warmer<\/a>\u00a0than it was in the late 1800s (before the industrial revolution) and warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/press-release\/2020-was-one-of-three-warmest-years-record\">last decade (2011-2020) was the warmest on record<\/a>, and each of the last four decades has been warmer than any previous decade since 1850.<\/p>\n<p>Many people think climate change mainly means warmer temperatures. But temperature rise is only the beginning of the story. Because the Earth is a system, where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence changes in all others.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg2\/resources\/press\/press-release\">consequences of climate change<\/a>\u00a0now include, among others, intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea levels, flooding, melting polar ice, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/2021\/08\/earth-asking-for-help.jpg\" alt=\"The Earth is asking for help.\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>People are experiencing climate change in diverse ways<br \/>\n<\/strong>Climate change can affect our health, ability to grow food, housing, safety and work. Some of us are already more vulnerable to climate impacts, such as people living in small island nations and other <a title=\"Funding: Waste Management in Developing Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-waste-management-in-developing-countries\">developing countries<\/a>. Conditions like sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion have advanced to the point where whole <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a> have had to relocate, and protracted droughts are putting people at risk of famine. In the future, the number of \u201cclimate refugees\u201d is expected to rise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every increase in global warming matters<br \/>\n<\/strong>In a series of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/assessment-report\/ar6\/\">UN reports<\/a>, thousands of scientists and government reviewers agreed that limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5\u00b0C would help us avoid the worst climate impacts and maintain a livable climate. Yet policies currently in place point to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/emissions-gap-report-2022\">2.8\u00b0C temperature rise<\/a>\u00a0by the end of the century.<\/p>\n<p>The emissions that cause climate change come from every part of the world and affect everyone, but<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/40932\/EGR2022_ESEN.pdf?sequence=8\">\u00a0some countries produce much more than others<\/a>.The seven biggest emitters alone (<a title=\"China releases renewed citizens\u2019 10 dos and don\u2019ts for environment protection, underlining knowledge on biodiversity, climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/china-releases-renewed-citizens-10-dos-and-donts-for-environment-protection-underlining-knowledge-on-biodiversity-climate-change\">China<\/a>, the United States of America, India, the European Union, Indonesia, the Russian Federation, and Brazil) accounted for about half of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone must take <a title=\"Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation: Pelagos Initiative\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prince-albert-ii-of-monaco-foundation-pelagos-initiative\">climate action<\/a>, but people and countries creating more of the problem have a greater responsibility to act first.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/2021\/09\/climatechange11.jpg\" alt=\"Photocomposition: an image of the world globe looking worried to a thermometer with raising temperatures\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We face a huge challenge but already know many solutions<br \/>\n<\/strong>Many climate change solutions can deliver economic benefits while improving our lives and protecting the environment. We also have global frameworks and agreements to guide progress, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/17-goals-to-transform-our-world\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-convention\/what-is-the-united-nations-framework-convention-on-climate-change\">UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a>. Three broad categories of action are: cutting emissions, <a title=\"Forest Farm Producers in Nepal discussed to up-scale the best climate change adaptation practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-farm-producers-in-nepal-discussed-to-up-scale-the-best-climate-change-adaptation-practices\">adapting to climate<\/a> impacts and financing required adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>Switching energy systems from fossil fuels to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/raising-ambition\/renewable-energy\">\u00a0renewables like solar or wind<\/a>\u00a0will reduce the emissions driving climate change. But we have to act now. While a growing number of countries is committing to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/net-zero-coalition\">net zero emissions<\/a>\u00a0by 2050,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg3\/resources\/press\/press-release\/\">emissions must be cut in half by 2030<\/a>\u00a0to keep warming below 1.5\u00b0C. Achieving this means huge declines in the use of coal, oil and gas: over two-thirds of today\u2019s proven reserves of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/ebe15dfb-30c8-42cf-8733-672b3500aed7\/WEO2012_free.pdf\">fossil fuels need to be kept in the ground<\/a>\u00a0by 2050 in order to prevent catastrophic levels of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/2021\/08\/climatechange10.jpg\" alt=\"Growing coalition\" \/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/climate-adaptation\">Adapting<\/a>\u00a0to climate consequences protects people, homes, businesses, livelihoods, infrastructure and natural ecosystems. It covers current impacts and those likely in the future. Adaptation will be required everywhere, but must be prioritized now for the most vulnerable people with the fewest resources to cope with <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">climate<\/a> hazards. The rate of return can be high. Early warning systems for disasters, for instance, save lives and property, and can deliver benefits up to 10 times the initial cost.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We can pay the bill now, or pay dearly in the future<br \/>\n<\/strong>Climate action requires significant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/raising-ambition\/climate-finance\">financial investments<\/a>\u00a0by governments and businesses. But <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate<\/a> inaction is vastly more expensive. One critical step is for <a title=\"United Nations Industrial Development Organisation \u2014 Innovative Solutions towards Net-Zero\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-industrial-development-organisation-innovative-solutions-towards-net-zero\">industrialized countries to fulfil their commitment to provide $100 billion a year to developing countries so they can adapt and move towards<\/a> greener economies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/2021\/08\/financial-investment.jpg\" alt=\"Climate finance\" \/><\/div>\n<p>To get familiar with some of the more technical terms used in connection with climate change, consult the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatepromise.undp.org\/news-and-stories\/climate-dictionary-everyday-guide-climate-change\">Climate Dictionary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.
