The summit\u2019s primary aim is to deliberate on the present status of biodiversity in Africa and promote the engagement of African youth in national-level biodiversity conservation and the execution of decisions made by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><strong>Summit Theme:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cFrom Awareness to Action: Empowering African Youth for Biodiversity Conservation\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The theme of AYSB 2023 is timely in light of the <a title=\"Recent scientific briefs provide information about the Global Biodiversity Framework goals.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/recent-scientific-briefs-provide-information-about-the-global-biodiversity-framework-goals\">recently held COP15 and the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework<\/a> (KMGBF).<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The theme emphasizes the need to move beyond simply raising awareness about <a title=\"Strengthening Protection of Parks Is Crucial for Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/strengthening-protection-of-parks-is-crucial-for-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation to taking concrete and meaningful actions to protect<\/a> and sustainably manage biodiversity in Africa. It recognizes that awareness alone is not enough, and that empowering African youth to take <a title=\"Conservation Action Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-action-fund-2\">action is crucial for achieving positive conservation<\/a> outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The theme also underscores the importance of youth empowerment in <a title=\"Biodiversity Conservation \u2013 Different Methods and Strategies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-conservation-different-methods-and-strategies\">biodiversity conservation<\/a>. African youth represent a significant demographic group with immense potential to make a difference in safeguarding biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The main objectives of the second African Youth Summit on Biodiversity are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To increase awareness about the Kunming-Montreal <a title=\"Adoption of a New Global Biodiversity Framework\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/adoption-of-a-new-global-biodiversity-framework\">Global Biodiversity Framework<\/a> and emphasize the significance of youth involvement in its implementation.<\/li>\n<li>To inspire and urge young people to participate in national-level initiatives, including the revision of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) and the creation of national reports.<\/li>\n<li>To provide a platform for youth from GYBN Africa chapters and other youth organizations to exchange their experiences, best practices, and innovative ideas in <a title=\"statutory review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/statutory-review-of-the-biodiversity-conservation-act-2016-nsw\">biodiversity conservation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>To empower youth to engage in and formulate recommendations for the inter-sessional CBD meetings.<\/li>\n<li>To strengthen the network of young people dedicated to biodiversity <a title=\"Small Grants for Conservation in Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/small-grants-for-conservation-in-africa\">conservation in Africa<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Expected Outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The expected outcomes of the African Youth Summit on Biodiversity are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased understanding of the Kunming-Montreal <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Capacity Enhancement Support Program 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-capacity-enhancement-support-program-2022\">Global Biodiversity<\/a> Framework and its objectives.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthened network of young people committed to <a title=\"Shared by Nature: From \u2018frog walk\u2019 to biodiversity conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/shared-by-nature-from-frog-walk-to-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation<\/a> in Africa and participating in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal GBF.<\/li>\n<li>Empowered Youth Leaders: The summit will empower young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to actively <a title=\"China has made significant contributions to biodiversity conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/china-has-made-significant-contributions-to-biodiversity-conservation\">contribute to biodiversity conservation<\/a> efforts in their respective communities and countries.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge Exchange: The summit will facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices among youth participants, experts, and organizations. This knowledge-sharing will foster innovative solutions and inspire new approaches to address <a title=\"The Impact of Natural History Museum Decline on Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-impact-of-natural-history-museum-decline-on-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation<\/a> challenges.<\/li>\n<li>Action-oriented Initiatives: The summit will serve as a platform for participants to develop and action-oriented initiatives that directly contribute to biodiversity <a title=\"Science Communication Course\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-communication-course\">conservation<\/a> in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Establishment of new connections and collaborations among participants and\/or organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Target Audience<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The summit will bring together young people aged between 18-35 from across Africa who are interested in biodiversity <a title=\"Conservation Tech Award\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-tech-award\">conservation<\/a>. Participants will include youth leaders, students, researchers, activists, and representatives from NGOs, <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">government<\/a> agencies, and the private sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Expected Number of Participants<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The anticipated number of participants is 100, who will be attending in-person. Among them, 54 participants will be funded, ensuring representation from at least one youth per <a title=\"Consultancy services on assessment of forest planning and management in different forest types in selected African countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/consultancy-services-on-assessment-of-forest-planning-and-management-in-different-forest-types-in-selected-african-countries\">African country<\/a>. Additionally, there will be 46 self-funded participants. The remaining participants will join the event online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proposed Date and<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Duration<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The African Youth Summit on Biodiversity is expected to take place in a hybrid format from September 26 to 28, 2023.
