{"id":7530,"date":"2023-07-14T14:34:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T11:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=7530"},"modified":"2023-07-14T14:34:08","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T11:34:08","slug":"livestock-farming-worsens-climate-change-says-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/livestock-farming-worsens-climate-change-says-expert","title":{"rendered":"Livestock farming worsens climate change, says expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-intro-heading\">Summary<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-intro-wrap\">\n<div class=\"article-intro\">\n<ul>\n<li>The summit was aimed at raising awareness that factory farming is also a climate culprit.<\/li>\n<li>They therefore called on the government to commit so as to cap the footprint of factory farming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Firewood, charcoal, kerosene are not the only major contributors to <a title=\"Blue foods face significant risks from climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/blue-foods-face-significant-risks-from-climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, World Animal Protection has said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the second Africa Protein Summit on Wednesday, <a title=\"WeForest \u2013 Programme Director, Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/weforest-programme-director-africa\">Director of World Animal Protection Africa<\/a> Tennyson Williams said agricultural emissions should be addressed the same way as fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The summit aimed at raising <a title=\"Public Awareness on Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/public-awareness-on-climate-change-2\">awareness that factory farming is also a major contributor to climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Factory farming is associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions through the clearing of <a title=\"Call for Proposals \u2013 Forest Management Planning for Village Land Forest Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-forest-management-planning-for-village-land-forest-reserves\">forest lands<\/a> to produce animal feeds. The high nutrient excretion in the manure because of overfeeding of animals favours the <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">emissions,&#8221;<\/a> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Director for the Directorate of Veterinary Services Jane Njuguna was also present at the summit and said factory-farmed animals are fed high-grain diets that utilise huge amounts of fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meat production has raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbl-204-ecological-impact-assessment-and-environmental-planning\" title=\"FBL 204: Ecological Impact Assessment and Environmental Planning\">environmental impacts<\/a> since it&#8217;s being practiced in many countries, contributes to soil erosion through overgrazing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Njuguna referred to a report released in 2019 which stated that meat demand is concentrated in urban areas mainly Nairobi and Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The carbon footprint of cell-cultured meat is still unclear but early evidence suggests this food source will be less carbon intensive than beef if produced with the use of clean <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energy,&#8221;<\/a> she said.<\/p>\n<p>They, therefore, called on the <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">government<\/a> to commit to capping the carbon footprint of factory farming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We call on the government to commit via Nationally Determined Contributions or National <a title=\"Forest Farm Producers in Nepal discussed to up-scale the best climate change adaptation practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-farm-producers-in-nepal-discussed-to-up-scale-the-best-climate-change-adaptation-practices\">Adaptation Plans to cap the footprint of factory farming<\/a> and transition out of land-intensive sectors altogether,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>The summit also called on the public and <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">climate<\/a> movements to push for a moratorium on factory farming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary The summit was aimed at raising awareness that factory farming is also a climate culprit.
