Nature-based solutions (NbS) have emerged as a powerful tool in the fight against these issues, offering a sustainable and holistic approach to restoring ecosystems and building a sustainable future for the planet. NbS works on the conviction that healthy and well-managed ecosystems have the ability to deliver critical benefits and services for survival of life on the planet such as food and fodder, clean water and air, carbon sequestration, and natural flood protection amongst a plethora of benefits. Working with, rather than against, nature, we can harness its power to <a title=\"Pilot Cities for Urban Ecosystem Restoration\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/pilot-cities-for-urban-ecosystem-restoration\">restore ecosystems<\/a>, mitigate climate change, enhance biodiversity, and ensure the well-being of communities worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From reforestation <a title=\"Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia \u2014 Project Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/reversing-environmental-degradation-in-africa-and-asia-project-grants\">projects to the creation of wetlands and the restoration of degraded<\/a> habitats, NbS focuses on reviving natural processes and methodologies in promoting the recovery of ecosystems. By doing so, it helps promote <a title=\"New Nature Restoration Law boosts biodiversity and climate action across Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-nature-restoration-law-boosts-biodiversity-and-climate-action-across-europe\">biodiversity in turn restoring<\/a> ecological balance, and enhancing the ecosystem resilience. In recent years, NbS has become an <a title=\"GMES &amp; Africa Strengthens Synergy with PolicyMakers to Address Climate Change Effects through EO Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/gmes-africa-strengthens-synergy-with-policymakers-to-address-climate-change-effects-through-eo-technologies\">effective tool in addressing climate change<\/a> and work towards mitigation and adaptation measures. Forests, for example, act as <a title=\"Extreme wildfires are turning the world\u2019s largest forest ecosystem from carbon sink into net-emitter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/extreme-wildfires-are-turning-the-worlds-largest-forest-ecosystem-from-carbon-sink-into-net-emitter\">carbon sinks<\/a>, absorbing vast amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. By <a title=\"AstraZeneca expands global AZ Forest initiative to boost ecological and community resilience in Ghana and Rwanda\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/astrazeneca-expands-global-az-forest-initiative-to-boost-ecological-and-community-resilience-in-ghana-and-rwanda\">restoring and expanding forested<\/a> areas, we can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, wetlands, mangroves, and seagrass beds are powerful carbon stores, with the potential to sequester and store even more carbon than <a title=\"FBE 603 Terrestrial Ecosystems\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbe-603-terrestrial-ecosystems\">terrestrial ecosystems<\/a>. Protecting and restoring these habitats can play a vital role in combating <a title=\"Climate change triggers sand storms, devastating desert communities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-triggers-sand-storms-devastating-desert-communities\">climate change<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nature based solutions for community wellbeing<br \/>\n<\/b><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NbS also presents an opportunity to improve the well-being of communities. In urban landscapes, <a title=\"Republican attacks on ESG aren\u2019t stopping companies in red states from going green\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/republican-attacks-on-esg-arent-stopping-companies-in-red-states-from-going-green\">green<\/a> spaces not only provide recreational areas but also improve air quality, reduce the risk of urban heat islands, and enhance mental and physical health. In Delhi, for example, which depends on neighbouring states for <a title=\"Area Water and Soil Resources Advisor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/area-water-and-soil-resources-advisor\">water<\/a> supplies leading to water deficits during the pre-monsoons, the government has been rejuvenating the existing lakes in Delhi and building new lakes wherever needed. This will address the <a title=\"Water, Climate, and Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/water-climate-and-biodiversity\">water woes and\u00a0 also support the revival of biodiversity<\/a>. In Andhra Pradesh, Zero-Budget Natural Farming, which completely depends on employing organic inputs to improve the resilience of both crops and land, has significantly reduced the health risks for people involved in agriculture, while enhancing their food &amp; nutritional security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the immediate benefits they provide, NbS also offers long-term economic advantages. Investing in NbS can lead to job creation and economic growth, particularly in sectors such as <a title=\"Building locally viable ecosystem restoration solutions in Africa.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/building-locally-viable-ecosystem-restoration-solutions-in-africa\">ecosystem restoration<\/a>, sustainable agriculture, and ecotourism. In Assam, members from the Bodo and Mising communities in Sonitpur and Jorhat districts have been <a title=\"Restoring Degraded Forests Could Bring Back Lost Rainfall, Cooler Temperatures\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-degraded-forests-could-bring-back-lost-rainfall-cooler-temperatures\">restoring degraded forest<\/a> lands and introducing agroforestry with crops such as king chillis and lemons as a means of mitigating human-elephant conflict. <a title=\"Restoring a transitional cloud forest in Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-a-transitional-cloud-forest-in-costa-rica\">Restoring nearby forest<\/a> areas not only reduces the likelihood of crop loss and damage due to elephant incursions, but gain higher value from agroforestry crops \u2013 while also enriching the soil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NbS and Economy<br \/>\n<\/b><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate challenges are just the \u2018tip of the iceberg\u2019 we face today. <a title=\"Species on the Move: How Climate Change Is Re-Making Ecosystems\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/species-on-the-move-how-climate-change-is-re-making-ecosystems\">Ecosystem destruction and biodiversity loss compound the risks posed by climate change:<\/a> by 2050 2% of India\u2019s annual GDP is expected to be lost to climate change. NbS with its multidimensional approach becomes an effective tool to cushion the economy by restoring ecosystems, mitigating <a title=\"Climate Change &amp; Environmental Justice Fellowship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-environmental-justice-fellowship-2\">climate change and enhancing biodiversity<\/a>. The NbS focuses on building resilience through stocking up on <a title=\"Assistant Research Fellow (Natural Resources Management)(Re-Advertised) \u2013 2 Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/assistant-research-fellow-natural-resources-managementre-advertised-2-post\">natural resources<\/a> aka natural capital. By maintaining healthy ecosystems using the NbS model, we can build a regenerative economy, there is a $26 trillion opportunity for a sustainable, equitable future for people &amp; <a title=\"Biodiversity at Stake: The Dark Side of Our Food Production System\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-at-stake-the-dark-side-of-our-food-production-system\">biodiversity<\/a> by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NbS also offers a significant push to global <a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">climate<\/a> goals. Optimization of farmland and enhancement of forest health can contribute to national climate goals for <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon<\/a> sequestration. For example \u2013 The North East Region of India which is well-endowed with natural resources offers an incredible opportunity to scale up the NbS model to build a sustainable future. Estimates suggest that rewilding lands in the North East might bring in up to INR 450,544 crores per year on maturation through <a title=\"Uganda Encourages Bamboo Farming to Combat Deforestation &amp; Promote Sustainability\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/uganda-encourages-bamboo-farming-to-combat-deforestation-promote-sustainability\">sustainable bamboo<\/a> and agroforestry products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, it becomes pertinent that the NbS are seen as part of a broader strategy that includes actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to renewable <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energy<\/a> sources, and adopting sustainable practices across various industries. The post-COVID union budgets of <a title=\"Indian government introduces draft for Green Credits, to reward environmental initiatives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/indian-government-introduces-draft-for-green-credits-to-reward-environmental-initiatives\">India have seen a major push into rebuilding the agriculture sector as well as other green initiatives<\/a> aimed at transitioning towards a net-zero economy. The upcoming budgets and policies should focus on hand-holding businesses that are nature based and actively <a title=\"Africa\u2019s land and forest restoration initiative gathers pace\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/africas-land-and-forest-restoration-initiative-gathers-pace\">restore degraded land or forests<\/a>. Incentives and input capital to take up regenerative economic activities like <a title=\"Agroforestry Group to Attend International Agarwood Conference ISSA 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agroforestry-group-to-attend-international-agarwood-conference-issa-2023\">agroforestry<\/a>, sustainable fisheries and horticulture, organic and low-carbon handicrafts, recycling and upcycling industries will help create green jobs. While there are strategies in place to boost the <a title=\"The contribution of the forest sector to the national economy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-contribution-of-the-forest-sector-to-the-national-economy\">national economy<\/a>, it is equally important that investments be made in regional and sub-regional priorities based on the true potential of the region. For instance \u2013 the North Eastern Region can become the center for innovation in the field of sustainable forestry and <a title=\"Putting local communities at the heart of forest restoration\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/putting-local-communities-at-the-heart-of-forest-restoration\">forest restoration<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the long run, NbS has the potential to reduce the costs associated with environmental damage and <a title=\"Forest Farm Producers in Nepal discussed to up-scale the best climate change adaptation practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-farm-producers-in-nepal-discussed-to-up-scale-the-best-climate-change-adaptation-practices\">climate change adaptation<\/a>, making them a cost-effective approach. But in order to fully harness the power of NbS, collaboration and partnerships are crucial. <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">Governments<\/a>, businesses, communities, and civil society organizations must work together to develop and implement NbS on a large scale. This requires the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and resources to ensure the success and scalability of NbS initiatives.
