{"id":7784,"date":"2023-07-25T21:14:31","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T18:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=7784"},"modified":"2023-07-25T21:14:32","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T18:14:32","slug":"indigenous-trees-to-constitute-40-of-rwandas-forests-in-carbon-trading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/indigenous-trees-to-constitute-40-of-rwandas-forests-in-carbon-trading","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Trees to Constitute 40% of Rwanda&#8217;s Forests in Carbon Trading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda is planning to plant more trees, of which 40 per cent must be indigenous species, in order to access the carbon market,\u00a0<i>The New Times<\/i>\u00a0has learnt.<\/p>\n<p>The country plants 30-40 million tree seedlings every year.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are carrying out experiments on restoring 20 degraded indigenous (native) tree species so as to recommend those that are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/article\/1630\/news\/environment\/rwanda-to-restore-drought-resistant-trees-amid-rising-temperatures\">resistant to drought<\/a>\u00a0and can sequester large quantities of carbon dioxide to cope with climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Concorde Nsengumuremyi, the Director General of Rwanda Forestry Authority, said the carbon market framework to help Rwanda compete on the international carbon market has been completed and is awaiting approval in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>The carbon market allows nations to finance carbon-cutting <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">projects in other countries and count the avoided emissions towards their own climate<\/a> targets.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon credit<\/a> is a kind of permit that represents one tonne of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda targets to reduce <a title=\"Agriculture Dept. to Invest 0M in Measuring Greenhouse Emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agriculture-dept-to-invest-300m-in-measuring-greenhouse-emissions\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a> by 38 per cent by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have decided to ensure 40 per cent of all trees to be <a title=\"Maryland\u2019s top invasive plant species import harm to natives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/marylands-top-invasive-plant-species-import-harm-to-natives\">planted be native species<\/a>. We have recommended all partners such as NGOs, districts and others involved in <a title=\"Tree planting for environmental conservation and nutritional supplement around MkambaraniUzima homeless children centre, Morogoro, Tanzania (2014-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/tree-planting-for-environmental-conservation-and-nutritional-supplement-around-mkambaraniuzima-homeless-children-centre-morogoro-tanzania-2014-2015\">tree planting<\/a> comply with the directive. This is because native trees have the potential to sequester large quantities of carbon dioxide and, therefore, can help Rwanda tap into the carbon market,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The native trees to be <a title=\"Restoring a transitional cloud forest in Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-a-transitional-cloud-forest-in-costa-rica\">restored<\/a> are also expected to resist weather conditions such as drought, diseases, and pests, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a title=\"Stopping Invasive Tree Species in Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stopping-invasive-tree-species-in-africa\">tree species<\/a> in Rwanda are dominated by Eucalyptus. If Eucalyptus is attacked by any disease, the country could become a desert. That is why having different tree species is very important so that when one species is attacked, others can survive,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Nsengumuremyi said indigenous tree species are recommended as they also have an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/article\/12027\/News\/farmers-target-frw800m-from-ornamental-trees-alone\">ornamental role<\/a>\u00a0in both rural and urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to beautifying the country, these trees can be mixed with crops, meaning they can be planted in all parts of the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conservation scientists gather in Kigali<br \/>\n<\/b>Speaking during the opening of the International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB 2023) in Kigali on Sunday, July 23, Jeanne d\u2019Arc Mujawamariya, the Minister of Environment, said over the last three decades, Rwanda has made significant strides in protecting and restoring diverse ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2019, Rwanda reached its goal of increasing <a title=\"Call for Applications: Consultancy services on drivers of forest cover change and loss in different forest types in Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-consultancy-services-on-drivers-of-forest-cover-change-and-loss-in-different-forest-types-in-africa\">forest cover<\/a> to 30 per cent of all land area.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts were put into the protection and restoration of degraded ecosystems, such as wetlands, lakes, and <a title=\"Postdoc \u2013 3D Modeling and Virtual Reality Creation of Natural Forest Environments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/postdoc-3d-modeling-and-virtual-reality-creation-of-natural-forest-environments\">natural forests<\/a>, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"The contribution of the forest sector to the national economy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-contribution-of-the-forest-sector-to-the-national-economy\">forest sector<\/a>, she said, has contributed to the reduction of land degradation, erosion control, and reduction of the intensity of landslides and floods in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>However, she stated that there is still more work to be done, as <a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">forests continue to be cut down every year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch more needs to be done for sustainability. <a title=\"Tanzania Fund for Tree Planting and Beekeeping 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tanzania-fund-for-tree-planting-and-beekeeping-2022\">Tree planting<\/a> continues. As we replace those cuts, we have to consider native trees,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the conference in Kigali is a platform to share experiences, exchange knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Beth Kaplin, a <a title=\"statutory review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/statutory-review-of-the-biodiversity-conservation-act-2016-nsw\">biodiversity conservation scientist who is also Acting<\/a> Director for the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resources Management at the University of Rwanda, said investments are needed to build capacity for monitoring biodiversity, especially using bioindicators.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed that there is a need to support Rwanda\u2019s <a title=\"Recent scientific briefs provide information about the Global Biodiversity Framework goals.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/recent-scientific-briefs-provide-information-about-the-global-biodiversity-framework-goals\">biodiversity information system which enables data access and helps the country meet its targets in the global biodiversity framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we say we have <a title=\"Pilot Cities for Urban Ecosystem Restoration\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/pilot-cities-for-urban-ecosystem-restoration\">restored ecosystems<\/a>, we need evidence of what worked and what didn\u2019t work to embrace an adaptive approach, and we need to use indicators of healthy functioning ecosystems and prioritisation of native species,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The conference has brought together <a title=\"Strengthening Protection of Parks Is Crucial for Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/strengthening-protection-of-parks-is-crucial-for-biodiversity-conservation\">conservation scientists from around the world who are using the latest technologies and approaches to conserve biodiversity<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda is planning to plant more trees, of which 40 per cent must be indigenous species, in order to access the carbon market,\u00a0The New Times\u00a0has learnt.
