to be the world&#8217;s warmest month on record, say scientists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">So hot has the month been to date that researchers are confident the 2019 record will be broken, even with several days to go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">UN chief Antonio Guterres said the planet is entering an &#8220;era of global boiling&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Scientists agree the extra heat is mainly linked to fossil fuel use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">US President Joe Biden described climate change as an &#8220;existential threat&#8221; The best guess is around 1.5C. Provisional data for July 2023 is about 1.5C above the average\" width=\"1024\" height=\"960\" \/><\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><a title=\"Vacant: Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research And Consultancy)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacant-deputy-vice-chancellor-academic-research-and-consultancy\">Researchers<\/a> work out the global air temperature by taking readings from weather stations dotted around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">However there are not enough stations to give a completely accurate global picture so scientists feed all of these readings &#8211; plus some measurements from the atmosphere itself &#8211; into computer models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">These allow scientists to create a &#8220;map without gaps&#8221;, meaning the global temperature can be reliably estimated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">By combining these datasets with global weather forecasts for the next few days, scientists can come up with a reliable estimate of the global temperature even before the end of the month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">While July is likely to be the warmest in records dating back around 150 years or so, some <a title=\"3-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/3-year-postdoctoral-research-fellowship-2\">researchers believe the final temperature may be the warmest in tens of thousands of years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">To work out these ancient figures, scientists use records like the air trapped in polar ice cores, or sediments in the deep <a title=\"Ocean Reporting Network\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ocean-reporting-network\">ocean<\/a>. These capture a signal of the <a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climate<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">From this evidence, while scientists can&#8217;t pinpoint specific months going that far back, they say the <a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">last time the world was similarly warm was about 120,000 years<\/a> ago &#8211; when sea levels were around 8m higher than today, and hippos were present as far north as Britain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-19w8cxh-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<p id=\"Why-are-these-records-happening\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\" tabindex=\"-1\"><strong><span role=\"text\">Why are these records happening?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>Researchers are confident that emissions of fossil fuels from human activities are mostly to blame for the levels of warming we are now seeing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;The extreme weather which has affected many millions of people in July is unfortunately the harsh reality of climate change and a foretaste of the future,&#8221; said the World Meteorological Organization&#8217;s Secretary-General Prof Petteri Taalas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;The need to reduce <a title=\"Agriculture Dept. to Invest 0M in Measuring Greenhouse Emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/agriculture-dept-to-invest-300m-in-measuring-greenhouse-emissions\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a> is more urgent than ever before,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Climate action is not a luxury but a must.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Experts believe that July&#8217;s temperature record will not be the last one broken this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">As well as the ongoing impact of greenhouse gases, there&#8217;s the growing effect of the\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-64192508\">El Ni\u00f1o weather system<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a natural event where oceans warm in the east Pacific and release heat into the atmosphere. This is likely to push temperatures even higher and may make 2023 or 2024 the warmest year yet recorded, because scientists warn we&#8217;re yet to see its full impacts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">There are other factors that have might have added to global temperatures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">New shipping rules have led to a smaller amount of pollutants being released, and until recently levels of Saharan dust in the atmosphere have been low.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e1aol6dh1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">These airborne particles, called &#8220;aerosols&#8221;, typically reflect some of the sun&#8217;s <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energy<\/a> back into space &#8211; although the science is very complicated.
