The Initiative invites applications for conservation partnerships from nonprofit entities and NGOs for projects in tropical Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Applying organizations may submit proposals for either a land purchase or a protected area designation. Applications to <a title=\"Rainforest Trust: Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/rainforest-trust-creating-new-protected-areas\">create new protected areas<\/a> are reviewed three times per year. Application deadlines are 01 February, 01 June, and 01 November each year.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforesttrust.org\/get-involved\/apply-for-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>About<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Partner with Rainforest Trust to Create Protected Areas<br \/>\n<\/strong>We partner with local conservation organizations to create new protected areas for safeguarding endangered species and exemplary intact landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>Join our partnership now to save species and <a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\">protect<\/a> our planet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps &amp; Deadlines for Applying for Rainforest Trust Support<br \/>\n<\/strong>Project development and review at Rainforest Trust is a dynamic process where partners work extensively with our Conservation Team to develop project proposals. To be considered, interested organizations must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Complete a short Eligibility Questionnaire<\/strong>\u00a0available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc1-Egk-wnTuO9ivNP_8yVorEsShEHQSIFu7jfaW-rS2ekW2A\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete and submit a <\/strong><a title=\"PhD Research Concept Note: Invasion, impacts and management of Prosopis and Water Hyacinth in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-research-concept-note-invasion-impacts-and-management-of-prosopis-and-water-hyacinth-in-tanzania\">Concept Note<\/a>.\u00a0If your organization and project are eligible, you will be provided our <a title=\"Call for Concept Notes for Regional Innovation Collaboration Projects in eastern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-concept-notes-for-regional-innovation-collaboration-projects-in-eastern-africa\">Concept Note<\/a> template to complete.\n<ul>\n<li>Concept notes are accepted anytime.<\/li>\n<li>However, if you are submitting a Concept Note for a <a title=\"Human activities impact wildlife, even in protected areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/human-activities-impact-wildlife-even-in-protected-areas\">Protected Area<\/a> Full Award and you would like it to be considered by the below Application deadlines (see Step 3),\u00a0<strong>we recommend submitting your Concept Note at least two months in advance of these deadlines.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Rapid Feasibility Awards have no deadlines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete and submit an Application<\/strong>.\u00a0Based on your Concept Note, if your <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">project<\/a> fits our criteria, you will be contacted to begin work on a more detailed Application.\n<ul>\n<li>The deadlines for submitting <a title=\"Call for applications: International Climate Protection Fellowships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-international-climate-protection-fellowships\">Applications for Protected<\/a> Area Full Awards are February 1, June 1 and November 1 of each calendar year. These Applications are then reviewed and approved by Rainforest Trust\u2019s Board of Directors. Approved Protected Area Full Awards typically start no earlier than 6 months after the above Application deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Rapid Feasibility Awards have no deadlines. Once Applications for Rapid Feasibility Awards are approved, they can begin soon thereafter. See the description of Rapid Feasibility <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility \u2014 Young Researchers Award 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-young-researchers-award-2023\">Awards below for more information<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>Final Application Deadlines for<br \/>\nProtected Area Full Awards:<br \/>\nFebruary 1 \u2022 June 1 \u2022 November 1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Project Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Project <a title=\"Research Grants for Field Research 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-for-field-research-2024\">Grant<\/a> Applications should meet the following criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clear focus on <a title=\"Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/creating-new-protected-areas\">creating a new protected area<\/a> or the expansion of existing protected areas.\n<ul>\n<li>This can be through land purchase, designation as a <a title=\"Botany and Ecology Field Practical Training at Saadani National Park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/botany-and-ecology-field-practical-training-at-saadani-national-park\">National Park<\/a> or other officially recognised protected area, conversion of logging concessions to reserve, long-term land lease, or land-titling or other mechanism of providing for indigenous ownership and management with the formal stipulation that the indigenous or community lands will be managed for conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Proposed sites must be currently unprotected. Use IUCN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.protectedplanet.net\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Database of Protected Areas<\/a>\u00a0to determine if the area is already recognized as protected (category 1-6). Exceptions: We do not consider Biosphere Reserves, <a title=\"UNESCO World Heritage Center \u2014 Requests for International Assistance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unesco-world-heritage-center-requests-for-international-assistance\">World Heritage<\/a> Sites or RAMSAR Reserves to be officially protected by virtue of these designations.<\/li>\n<li>Projects should have endorsement from project stakeholders, especially local <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>All <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) invites proposals for project funding\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-gbif-invites-proposals-for-project-funding\">projects are expected to obtain Free Prior and Informed<\/a> Consent (FPIC) of any impacted communities.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">Projects should seek to develop sustainable<\/a> financing mechanisms for long-term management of the proposed protected area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proposed sites qualify if they meet\u00a0one of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Protect globally significant populations of Critically Endangered (CR) or Endangered (EN) species on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IUCN Red List of Threatened Species<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Preference will be given to proposed sites that qualify as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) under criterion A1(a) (site regularly holds a globally significant proportion of the population of a Critically Endangered or Endangered species; see page 16 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/union\/sites\/union\/files\/doc\/a_global_standard_for_the_identification_of_key_biodiversity_areas_final_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KBA Standard<\/a>).<br \/>\n<a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforesttrust.org\/get-involved\/rainforest-trust-partners\/key-biodiversity-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LEARN MORE ABOUT KBAS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There must be recent, verifiable evidence that <a title=\"Call for proposals \u2013 Citizen Science for Species Discovery\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-proposals-citizen-science-for-species-discovery\">species assessed as CR or EN occur within the proposed<\/a> site.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"African Elephant Conservation Fund invites project proposal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/african-elephant-conservation-fund-invites-project-proposal\">Projects proposed<\/a> under this criterion may encompass various habitat types (not only rainforests).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Protect an Intact Landscape according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforesttrust.org\/intact-landscape-project-criteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attached criteria<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Priority landscapes for Rainforest Trust include: Amazonia, the <a title=\"The Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) Flash News 09\/2019 Newsletter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-congo-basin-forest-partnership-cbfp-flash-news-09-2019-newsletter\">Congo Basin Forests<\/a>, Southern African Miombo, and the islands of Borneo and New Guinea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a title=\"Climate change mitigation: reducing emissions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-mitigation-reducing-emissions\">Mitigate global climate change<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Landscapes with a high capacity for <a title=\"The story behind a Carbon Credit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/the-story-behind-a-carbon-credit\">carbon<\/a> sequestration (e.g. tropical peat swamps, mangroves, p\u00e1ramo).<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">Projects which substantially reduce CO2 emissions<\/a> (Carbon offset eligible).<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Carbon Trading Projects in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/carbon-trading-projects-in-tanzania\">Projects which store in perpetuity a very large quantity of carbon<\/a> at a reasonable cost (e.g. designations of extensive tall hardwood forests as <a title=\"Field practical Training in Wetlands Conservation at Tarangire National Park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/ichthyology-conservation-of-wetlands-ichthyology-at-tarangire-national-park\">national parks<\/a> at a low cost\/acre).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>An online Rainforest Trust priority setting application that incorporates Rainforest Trust metrics can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rainforesttrust.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=1a9c053c54064baf8e2c2b1038ce7296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. The information button (\u201ci\u201d) in the upper left corner will provide further detail on the metrics.<\/p>\n<p>Rainforest Trust partner support focuses on direct conservation action. We are unable to assist with the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overhead costs<\/li>\n<li>Long-term <a title=\"entomology field training continues at the Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biology-systematics-taxonomy-and-evolution-of-insects-field-training-continues-at-the-udzungwa-ecological-monitoring-centre\">ecological monitoring<\/a> or research<\/li>\n<li>Habitat <a title=\"Restoring a transitional cloud forest in Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/restoring-a-transitional-cloud-forest-in-costa-rica\">restoration<\/a> (e.g., tree planting)<\/li>\n<li>International travel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Project Review Process<br \/>\n<\/strong>Project development and review at Rainforest Trust is a dynamic process where partners work extensively with Rainforest Trust conservation staff to develop project proposals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"-large\">Before submitting a partnership application please complete the<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc1-Egk-wnTuO9ivNP_8yVorEsShEHQSIFu7jfaW-rS2ekW2A\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0eligibility questionnaire\u00a0<\/a>below. If your project is deemed to be a good fit for Rainforest Trust one of our staff members will contact you and work with you to develop the partnership application.<\/p>\n<p>Deadlines for draft applications are February 1, June 1 and November 1 of each year, but please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/donate.rainforesttrust.org\/Default.aspx?tsid=10100\">contact us<\/a>\u00a0at any time with any questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rapid Feasibility Awards<br \/>\n<\/strong>Applications for Rapid Feasibility Awards are reviewed on a rolling basis. Rainforest Trust provides Rapid Feasibility Awards to encourage conservationists and researchers to evaluate important potential sites for creating new Protected Areas. Awards average $5,000.<\/p>\n<p>Successful applications should exhibit clear intent to establish a new Protected Area and one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assess whether a site qualifies as an A1(a) KBA;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"FBL 205: Soil survey, classification and Land Evaluation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbl-205-soil-survey-classification-and-land-evaluation\">Evaluate land<\/a> tenure of unprotected A1(a) KBAs;<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the presence and abundance of CR and EN species within unprotected A1(a) KBAs;<\/li>\n<li>Investigate legal processes for potentially designating the site as a <a title=\"Tallin-based 1MT Nation raises \u20ac1 million to restore degraded lands in Africa by planting bamboo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tallin-based-1mt-nation-raises-e1-million-to-restore-degraded-lands-in-africa-by-planting-bamboo\">nationally recognized protected area or acquiring the long-term lease of gazetted land<\/a>, where appropriate;<\/li>\n<li>Negotiate land prices and gauge willingness to sell privately owned land.<\/li>\n<li>Assessments of <a title=\"Vermont House passes Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection bill (H126)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vermont-house-passes-community-resilience-and-biodiversity-protection-bill-h126\">community and government interest in Protected<\/a> Area creation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rainforest Trust partners with local conservation organizations to create new protected areas and expand existing ones for Critically Endangered and Endangered species.
