We should tackle it from the underlying causes\u201d, warned Jean Baptiste Havugimana, the Productive Sector director at the East African Community (EAC) secretariat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He said that despite last-minute rains during the last farming season, he was still worried that there would be sufficient rains during the coming season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Mr Havugimana challenged governments and other stakeholders in the EAC partner states to <a title=\"Funding: Waste Management in Developing Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-waste-management-in-developing-countries\">waste<\/a> no time in tackling the underlying causes of the crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He raised the alert here before a group of cyclists moving across the region to raise awareness of the impact of climate change at the Arusha Technical College (ATC).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>A programme manager with GIZ, a German aid agency, Max Middeke, said the situation was worrying because more than half of the bloc\u2019s population (63 percent) was food insecure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cIn <a title=\"Conservation and Wildlife in East Africa Story Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/conservation-and-wildlife-in-east-africa-story-grants\">East Africa<\/a>, climate change is causing devastating impacts on food security, leading to harvest failure and livestock losses,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He implored the regional leaders to act swiftly to help manage the adverse impacts of climate change \u201cand reduce the threat of food insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>In the EAC, Mr Middeke went on to say, the situation has reached a point where livelihoods have been threatened due to the severity of climate change impacts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Besides climate adversity, other reasons that are associated with increasing <a title=\"Yunus Environment Hub \u2014 Sustainable Food Systems in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/yunus-environment-hub-sustainable-food-systems-in-east-africa\">food insecurity in East Africa include violent conflicts and the global economic environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He added that GIZ would continue to support non-state actors in policy advocacy that promotes environmental sustainability and improves climate change adaptation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>One of the programmes, the EAC-GIZ SEAMPEC II, supports youth and women-focused activities that foster their involvement and engagement in the EAC Climate Change narrative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>This year\u2019s theme for the Great African Cyclists Safaris (GACs) is promoting people-centred integration through awareness creation on climate change and food security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Ms Jennifer Gathie, an EAC secretariat official in the agricultural production sector, said it was a pity that the region was still so dependent on rain-fed agriculture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>She said the <a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">climatic<\/a> conditions in some areas of the EA region had become so \u201c\u2019extremely volatile\u201d that irrigation was no longer a luxury but a necessity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cThe solution to the climate change crisis lies with irrigation systems, rainwater harvesting, and climate-smart agriculture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-page-ad_wrap desktop\">\n<div id=\"desktop-article-ad-3\" class=\"content-page-ad content-page-ad_desktop center-align-ad\" data-google-query-id=\"CI7co5P44IADFcJfFQgds2AINw\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>ATC Rector Dr Musa Chacha said human-induced activities rather than natural forces were to blame for climate change, a phenomenon associated with global warming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He said it should not surprise anybody that the college, which trains engineers and technicians, is a partner that agitates for food security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>This, according to him, was primarily because the training institution (ATC) was promoting renewable <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">energies<\/a> that safeguard the environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Failure to mitigate the effects of climate change was also cited by a regional business body as one of the reasons why agricultural production remains low in East Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The East African Business Council (EABC), in its report released last month, said the climate change factor cannot be overlooked as it has led to droughts and declining soil fertility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The same concerns were raised by the <a title=\"BIOPAMA: Medium Grants Eastern and Southern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biopama-medium-grants-eastern-and-southern-africa\">Eastern and Southern Africa<\/a> Small Scale Farmers\u2019 Forum (Esaff) in June this year, which cited natural calamities and conflicts as among the factors behind the food crisis in the region this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The conflict-torn DR Congo (DRC) is leading the pack, with about 25 million <a title=\"Blue foods face significant risks from climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/blue-foods-face-significant-risks-from-climate-change\">facing food<\/a> scarcity, the Morogoro-based lobby said in a report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>South Sudan, which has not fully recovered from years of civil war, has 7.7 million people at risk of not having enough food.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The alarming statistics on the looming food crisis in the region were made public during a discussion organized by Esaff on food security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The situation was equally alarming in Kenya, the region\u2019s largest economy, which has been subjected to a prolonged drought that has severely impacted agriculture and <a title=\"Livestock farming worsens climate change, says expert\"
