{"id":8106,"date":"2023-08-29T21:46:59","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T18:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=8106"},"modified":"2023-08-29T22:10:22","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T19:10:22","slug":"columbias-earth-networks-collaborative-climate-change-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/columbias-earth-networks-collaborative-climate-change-solutions","title":{"rendered":"Columbia&#8217;s Earth Networks: Collaborative Climate Change Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do plastic pollution, storytelling, and mental health have in common?<\/p>\n<p>These are all pathways Columbia scholars and students are taking to tackle the climate crisis, from different areas of expertise, through the\u00a0Earth Networks\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change and related environmental challenges are a messy, \u201cwicked\u201d problem that touches on many aspects of the way we live today: energy, consumption, biodiversity, water, inequality, technology and much more. Networks promote novel approaches to research, education, and impact in alignment with the <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">Climate School\u2019s mission to \u201cfurther knowledge and educate leaders to equitably and justly address the changing<\/a> climate and other sustainability challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In spring of 2023, the first cohort of Earth Networks completed the three-year program. These four networks pursued topics as wide-ranging as the soil that grows our food to distant planets, and have launched an extraordinary range of initiatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">The\u00a0Climate Mobility\u00a0Network developed<\/a> a new team-taught course at the\u00a0M.A. in <a title=\"Study finds simple, cheap way to use forests to slow global climate change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/study-finds-simple-cheap-way-to-use-forests-to-slow-global-climate-change\">Climate and Society\u00a0program and is building a partnership with the\u00a0Global<\/a> Centre for Climate Mobility.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Habitable Planets\u00a0Network submitted a proposal for the development of a planetary habitability program within the <a title=\"Stanford Law School Policy Lab and Bezos Earth Fund report recommends climate-smart forestry practices\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stanford-law-school-policy-lab-and-bezos-earth-fund-report-recommends-climate-smart-forestry-practices\">Climate School and produced a manuscript critiquing the application of Earth-based environmental practices<\/a> to other planets.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Healthy and <a title=\"Yunus Environment Hub \u2014 Sustainable Food Systems in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/yunus-environment-hub-sustainable-food-systems-in-east-africa\">Sustainable Food Systems\u00a0Network<\/a> developed and supported two graduate level courses and one undergraduate summer course (the latter in partnership with\u00a0Stone Barns Center for Agriculture\u00a0and Barnard College); a funded proposal on sustainable protein systems, which yielded four peer-reviewed journal articles (OneEarth); and a synthesis report to be launched at\u00a0Climate Week\u00a02023.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Environmental Justice and <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">Climate Just Cities\u00a0Network received a Columbia University Catalyst grant to develop a proposal for an Environmental Justice Center and forged a partnership with\u00a0WEACT for Environmental Justice\u00a0to support an Environmental Protection Agency Technical<\/a> Advisory grant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spring 2023 also marked the launch of three new networks.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Sustainability, <a title=\"Energy Globe Award for Sustainability \u2014 Awards 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/uncategorized\/energy-globe-award-for-sustainability-awards-2023\">Energy<\/a>, and Entertainment Network\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-107915 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-303x303.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001-303x303.png 303w, https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image001.png 544w\" alt=\"Smiling man in suit jacket and tie\" width=\"181\" height=\"181\" \/>(\u201cSEEN\u201d)\u00a0<\/strong>network, led by M.S. <a title=\"Facilitating stakeholders to apply multi-sectoral forum for mitigating conflicting interests for sustainable management of mangroves (2013-2015).\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/research\/facilitating-stakeholders-to-apply-multi-sectoral-forum-for-mitigating-conflicting-interests-for-sustainable-management-of-mangroves-2013-2015\">in\u00a0Sustainability Management\u00a0alum\u00a0Shaun<\/a> Hoyte, aims to create a coalition across entertainment industries to promote knowledge sharing on best practices for reducing their environmental footprint. The Network will focus initial efforts on the sports industry, and includes members from Columbia Sports Management, Columbia Alumni Affairs and several external groups.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">The\u00a0<strong>Climate Education for a Resilient<\/strong><\/a> Future\u00a0Network will explore climate education in the K-12 sector, with leadership from\u00a0Dannie Dinh,\u00a0Radhika Iyengar, and\u00a0Laurel Zaima-Sheehy. In the United States, students spend an average of just two hours per year learning<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-107917 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dannie-Radhika-Laurel.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dannie-Radhika-Laurel.jpg 329w, https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Dannie-Radhika-Laurel-277x303.jpg 277w\" alt=\"Three women's headshots\" width=\"246\" height=\"269\" \/>\u00a0about the <a title=\"WWF-T\u00fcrkiye urges protection of biodiversity amid climate crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/wwf-turkiye-urges-protection-of-biodiversity-amid-climate-crisis\">climate crisis; network members estimate that figures in many other countries are not much better<\/a>. Given this need for stronger climate education for younger learners, this network aims to identify, map, and establish a database of ongoing and active programs, collaborators, and best practices, as well as <a title=\"Value chain development for selected forest-based products to enhance community livelihoods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/value-chain-development-for-selected-forest-based-products-to-enhance-community-livelihoods\">develop products<\/a>, resources, and tools to support climate learners and educators around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The third new network,\u00a0<strong>Foundations for the Social Climate<\/strong>,<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-107919 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image006.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image006.png 472w, https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image006-298x303.png 298w\" alt=\"Black and white headshot of smiling man\" width=\"166\" height=\"169\" \/>\u00a0seeks to accelerate understanding of climate mental health as a <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">community<\/a> phenomenon, create greater social resilience in impacted communities, and bring mental health and social resilience into broader resilience planning. Led by\u00a0Gary Belkin, this network will connect with the\u00a0BillionMinds\u00a0project and the\u00a0United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Race to Resilience, bringing Columbia <a title=\"European School of Sustainability Science and Research- Doctoral Programme on Climate Change Adaptation by Publications\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-school-of-sustainability-science-and-research-doctoral-programme-on-climate-change-adaptation-by-publications\">researchers and scholars from public<\/a> health, psychology, risk management, and resilience into collaborations around mental health, social resilience, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these networks \u2014 whether mature or brand new \u2014 have one thing in common. They unite diverse, interdisciplinary teams from across the Columbia community to work together on a shared topic. The Earth Networks <a title=\"SwedBio Collaboration Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/swedbio-collaboration-program\">program as a whole provides an entry point to the Climate School for collaborators<\/a> from across the University; each team is provided support from the Climate School Office of Interdisciplinary Engagement, including tailored workshops to develop key skills and to advance projects.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in 2023 the Healthy and Sustainable <a title=\"Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/seeding-the-future-global-food-system-challenge\">Food Systems<\/a> Network participated in an Office of Interdisciplinary Engagement workshop series led by expert facilitator\u00a0Kirya Traber. The group identified their core values and goals. They spent time discussing power dynamics and identifying action areas in a workshop on \u201cCentering Justice.\u201d They had several \u201cRadical Collaboration\u201d working sessions to move their <a title=\"Call for Concept Notes for Regional Innovation Collaboration Projects in eastern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-concept-notes-for-regional-innovation-collaboration-projects-in-eastern-africa\">project<\/a> forward, and they honed their ability to share their work with non-expert audiences in a \u201cStorytelling\u201d workshop.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, please visit the Earth Networks page\u00a0here.
