However, the diversity of the forests is threatened by man-made disturbances, including the introduction of non-native plant species. Here, we assessed the current extent and drivers of the spread of the <a title=\"Stopping Invasive Tree Species in Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stopping-invasive-tree-species-in-africa\">invasive neotropical tree<\/a>, <i>Cedrela odorata<\/i>\u00a0L., introduced to Kimboza Forest Reserve in 1957 and 1960. We also assessed the impacts of the <a title=\"Maryland\u2019s top invasive plant species import harm to natives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/marylands-top-invasive-plant-species-import-harm-to-natives\">invasion on the composition of native<\/a> tree recruitment (height\u2009&lt;\u20090.5\u00a0m). The extent of <a title=\"Invasive species versus native counterparts: nature\u2019s doppelg\u00e4ngers.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invasive-species-versus-native-counterparts-natures-doppelgangers\">invasion<\/a> and drivers was assessed in 107 square plots (10\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u00a0m) and 240 subplots (2\u2009\u00d7\u20092\u00a0m) distributed systematically throughout the forest. The impact of\u00a0<i>C. odorata<\/i>\u00a0was assessed in 24 paired square sample plots (10\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u00a0m) that were established in forest patches invaded and uninvaded by\u00a0<i>C. odorata.<\/i>\u00a0By 2017, adult\u00a0<i>C<\/i>.\u00a0<a title=\"What we owe our trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/what-we-owe-our-trees\"><i>odorata<\/i>\u00a0trees<\/a> (diameter at breast height (DBH)\u2009\u2265\u200910\u00a0cm) occurred in 43% of plots and comprised, on average, 32% of the stems of all tree species and 28% of the basal area. The occurrence of\u00a0<i>C. odorata<\/i>\u00a0in the <a title=\"Extreme wildfires are turning the world\u2019s largest forest ecosystem from carbon sink into net-emitter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/extreme-wildfires-are-turning-the-worlds-largest-forest-ecosystem-from-carbon-sink-into-net-emitter\">forest was significantly associated with the occurrences of wildfire<\/a> and illegal logging, and significantly affected the density of native tree recruitments,\u00a0<i>Sorindeia madagascariensis<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Rinorea arborea<\/i>\u00a0but did not affect the species diversity.
