It currently operates in eight countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. BioInnovate Africa was established in 2010 with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is implemented by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (<em>icipe<\/em>) based in Nairobi, Kenya. The mission of BioInnovate Africa is to enable <a title=\"Senior Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/senior-scientist\">scientists<\/a> to translate innovative bioscience research ideas, inventions and technologies into practical uses that benefit society. This is crucial as the countries accelerate efforts towards achieving the <a title=\"Action Awards for Sustainable Development Goals\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/action-awards-for-sustainable-development-goals\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> 2030, and search for more sustainable solutions that conserve biodiversity, reduce carbon emissions, and mitigate and help the region adapt to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The BioInnovate <a title=\"Africa Fellowship Program 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/africa-fellowship-program-2023\">Africa Fellowship<\/a> for Women Scientists (BA-FWS) provides opportunities for early and mid-career women scientists to work with and learn from the diverse BioInnovate Africa bioeconomy projects and benefit from the vast networks in the region. The Fellows are hosted in BioInnovate Africa organisations outside their home countries for a period of three months, where they <a title=\"Funding Advances Biodiversity Net Gain Progress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-advances-biodiversity-net-gain-progress\">gain experience and establish networks to advance<\/a> their skills, innovation capacity and overall career progression.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Themes, projects and topics<br \/>\n<\/strong>Prospective applicants to the 2024 Fellowship call should select two topics from any of the following themes of BioInnovate Africa projects: <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Phytomedicine<\/li>\n<li>Food and nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Biomaterials<\/li>\n<li>Biopesticides<\/li>\n<li>Biofertilizers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bioeconomy policies<\/p>\n<p>Placement of a Fellow in a project is guided by the Fellow\u2019s choice of a theme of interest and an independent assessment by BioInnovate Africa <a title=\"Programme Officer \u2013 Planning, Coordination and Information Management (PO \u2013 PCIM) at EAMCEF\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/programme-officer-planning-coordination-and-information-management-po-pcim-at-eamcef\">Programme Management Office<\/a> (PMO) of their capacity to work in BioInnovate Africa supported project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What the Fellowship provides<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Fellowship package includes a round trip air ticket (from home country to country of host organisation), modest monthly stipend of US$ 1,000 and health insurance for the Fellows outside their home countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Benefits of becoming a BioInnovate Africa Fellow\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Practical experience: Each Fellow is placed in a BioInnovate Africa <a title=\"Local Project Support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/local-project-support\">supported project<\/a>, working alongside peers in biological based research and innovation. This <a title=\"Beekeeping Field Practical Training in Arusha: Hands-on experience in apiary management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/beekeeping-field-practical-training-in-arusha-hands-on-experience-in-apiary-management\">hands-on opportunity provides an all-rounded experience<\/a> in developing, testing, producing and commercializing impactful innovative biological based ideas and technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Career development: This fully supported Fellowship includes one-on-one mentorship by leading <a title=\"Junior Research Scientist in climate-smart forestry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/junior-research-scientist-in-climate-smart-forestry\">research scientists<\/a> and bio-innovators, as well as access to entrepreneurs and leaders in bio-innovation in eastern Africa and around the world.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge and skills improvement: The Fellowship ensures access to advanced <a title=\"FIELD PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR BSC. FORESTRY- FIRST YEAR STUDENTS UNDERTAKING COURSE OF FUNDAMENTALS OF ECOLOGY (FBL 102)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-for-bsc-forestry-first-year-students-undertaking-course-of-fundamentals-of-ecology-fbl-102\">training opportunities to nurture practical<\/a> skills in applying scientific knowledge for beneficial societal use, as well as leadership skills in managing innovation projects.<\/li>\n<li>Networking: Fellows are assured of interaction with other Fellows, <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">project<\/a> teams and researchers\/scientists in the host organisations. This widens their <a title=\"Columbia\u2019s Earth Networks: Collaborative Climate Change Solutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/columbias-earth-networks-collaborative-climate-change-solutions\">network and creates opportunities for scientific collaboration<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Expected outcomes of the Fellowship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioInnovate <a title=\"Call for Concept Notes for Regional Innovation Collaboration Projects in eastern Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-concept-notes-for-regional-innovation-collaboration-projects-in-eastern-africa\">Africa Fellows will continue to interact with each other and the teams they have networked with and be able to develop their ideas into bankable bio-innovation projects in the region<\/a>. Beyond the Fellowship, and upon return to their respective organisations, Fellows are expected to contribute to innovation <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystem<\/a> building, and serve as role models for other female scientists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eligibility\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Female nationals or residents of Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, <a title=\"New publication: Predicting the distribution of critically endangered tree species Karomia gigas under climate change in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-predicting-the-distribution-of-critically-endangered-tree-species-karomia-gigas-under-climate-change-in-tanzania\">Tanzania<\/a>, and Uganda.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Master of Forestry Degree Oral Defence\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/master-forestry-degree-oral-defence\">Master\u2019s degree<\/a> holder in any of the following fields: biological, chemical or environmental sciences, medicine, ICT, agriculture, engineering or any other closely related field.<\/li>\n<li>Early and mid-career female scientist affiliated to a university, research institute, or a legally registered private firm, which is currently participating in a BioInnovate Africa supported project (See list <a href=\"https:\/\/bioinnovate-africa.org\/implementing-partners\/#tab-45561\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bioinnovate-africa.org\/implementing-partners\/#tab-45561\">)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bioinnovate-africa.org\/implementing-partners\/#tab-45561\">.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Readiness to take up the Fellowship on a full-time basis, and in another BioInnovate Africa country. e. Not a previous Fellow.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>All applications <strong>MUST<\/strong> be accompanied by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A motivational essay of between 500- and 700-words detailing interest in the Fellowship, and how the <a title=\"AWARD One Planet Fellowship call for young climate researchers seeking career acceleration opportunity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/award-one-planet-fellowship-call-for-young-climate-researchers-seeking-career-acceleration-opportunity\">Fellowship will contribute to career<\/a> advancement. <a title=\"Call for Applications: Consultancy services on drivers of forest cover change and loss in different forest types in Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-consultancy-services-on-drivers-of-forest-cover-change-and-loss-in-different-forest-types-in-africa\">Applicants should <strong>clearly <\/strong>indicate the BioInnovate Africa<\/a> theme to which their idea applies. The idea <strong>should have<\/strong> potential to develop into a possible bio-innovation <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">project<\/a> on completing the Fellowship.<\/li>\n<li>An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae, which includes two referees with knowledge of the applicant\u2019s educational and professional qualifications and capabilities.<\/li>\n<li>A signed letter of support from the applicant\u2019s head of organisation or department, written on official letterhead. The letter should describe an applicant\u2019s suitability for the Fellowship and commitment by the organisation to <a title=\"Research Grants for Field Research 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-for-field-research-2024\">grant<\/a> sufficient leave to the Fellow to participate in the Fellowship.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Application and selection process\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2024\">\n<li>All applications should be made through the online application system http:\/\/grants.bioinnovateafrica.org\/forms\/womens_fellowship_2024.php. Only applicants recommended by heads of respective partner organisations will be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>The deadline for application is <strong>Tuesday, 16 January 2024, 23:59 hours <a title=\"Yunus Environment Hub \u2014 Sustainable Food Systems in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/yunus-environment-hub-sustainable-food-systems-in-east-africa\">East Africa<\/a> Time.<\/strong> Late applications will not be considered. Applications sent through email or post will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>After the application deadline, BioInnovate <a title=\"WeForest \u2013 Programme Director, Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/weforest-programme-director-africa\">Africa Programme<\/a> Management Office (PMO) will screen the applications received through the online system for completeness and eligibility. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Qualifying applications will be evaluated by an independent panel of experts set up by the PMO.
