More than 1 billion people rely heavily on forests for their livelihoods, and they are the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than half of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">Forests also play a vital role in global climate<\/a> regulation through the sequestration and storage of carbon.<br \/>\nBut despite increased awareness of their importance, forests are experiencing escalating <a title=\"Human activities impact wildlife, even in protected areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/human-activities-impact-wildlife-even-in-protected-areas\">impact from human activities<\/a>. In recent years we have lost over 3.5 million hectares of primary forest annually, and yet more forests are becoming <a title=\"Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia \u2014 Project Grants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/reversing-environmental-degradation-in-africa-and-asia-project-grants\">degraded<\/a> or fragmented. It has been calculated that the deforestation of <a title=\"Why Tropical Forests Are Important for Our Well-Being\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/why-tropical-forests-are-important-for-our-well-being\">tropical forests<\/a> is responsible for about 20 percent of current global carbon emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we will support:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under our Tropical Rainforests programme, preference will be given to initiatives working to protect\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\"><em>tropic<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em><strong>al\u00a0rainforests<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0for their value to the climate, communities and biodiversity, principally through avoided deforestation. We will consider both practical local <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">projects<\/a>, and strategic initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Local Project Support\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/local-project-support\"><strong>Local projects<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Applications for practical local projects that we will consider would typically be working on a specified tropical rainforest area, defined in hectares. We will generally only accept applications for the <a title=\"Rainforest Trust: Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/rainforest-trust-creating-new-protected-areas\">protection of areas<\/a> larger than 10,000 hectares. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their project involves:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Exposing, addressing and overcoming the <a title=\"Invasive moths, beetles putting local forests at risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invasive-moths-beetles-putting-local-forests-at-risk\">local drivers of deforestation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Management of the specified area<\/li>\n<li>Methods to measure and monitor the <a title=\"Rainforest Trust: Creating New Protected Areas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/rainforest-trust-creating-new-protected-areas\">protected area<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Sustainable livelihoods for forest-dependent <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Securing land rights or management rights for forest-dependent <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communities<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waterloofoundation.org.uk\/EnvironmentExamplesTropicalRainforestsLocal.html\">here<\/a>\u00a0for examples of local projects we have funded through our Tropical Rainforests programme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategic projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will consider <a title=\"Call for applications: International Climate Protection Fellowships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-international-climate-protection-fellowships\">applications for strategic projects that are working on addressing the drivers of deforestation on a wider or international<\/a> scale. These could include:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Working on international or regional <a title=\"Science without Borders Challenge 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/science-without-borders-challenge-2024\">forest<\/a> policy<\/li>\n<li>Campaigning for <a title=\"Call for consultancy services on strengthening capacity for policy change to improve REDD+ implementation and integration in Africa: capitalizing on best practices and lessons learnt in an evolving environment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-on-strengthening-capacity-for-policy-change-to-improve-redd-implementation-and-integration-in-africa-capitalizing-on-best-practices-and-lessons-learnt-in-an-evolving-en\">improved practices<\/a> in commerce<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Calling for innovative ocean-minded startups\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/calling-for-innovative-ocean-minded-startups\">Innovative<\/a> ways of reducing deforestation e.g. financial systems or solutions based on the value of <a title=\"Forest ecosystems of Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/knowledge-base\/forest-ecosystems-of-tanzania\">forest ecosystem<\/a> services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strategic project applicants will have to <a title=\"Recent scientific briefs provide information about the Global Biodiversity Framework goals.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/recent-scientific-briefs-provide-information-about-the-global-biodiversity-framework-goals\">provide the following information:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Evidence of previous successful strategic programmes e.g. an attributable <a title=\"Re-advertised: Consultancy services to enhance African REDD+ implementation and policy change capacity.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/re-advertised-consultancy-services-to-enhance-african-redd-implementation-and-policy-change-capacity\">change in policy<\/a> or improved supply chain. We may ask to see a full copy of the supporting <a title=\"Spatial Data Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/spatial-data-scientist\">data<\/a> and evaluation at a later stage;<\/li>\n<li>For your <a title=\"GBIF Call for proposals for the 2020 Capacity Enhancement Support Programme\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/gbif-call-for-proposals-for-the-2020-capacity-enhancement-support-programme-2\">proposed programme<\/a>, the specific measurable outcomes that you expect the programme to achieve, and the methods you will use to monitor these outcomes;<\/li>\n<li>The strategy put in place to ensure the <a title=\"European School of Sustainability Science and Research- Doctoral Programme on Climate Change Adaptation by Publications\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/european-school-of-sustainability-science-and-research-doctoral-programme-on-climate-change-adaptation-by-publications\">sustainability of the programme\u2019s<\/a> objectives for the long term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waterloofoundation.org.uk\/EnvironmentExamplesTropicaRainforestsStrategic.html\">here<\/a>\u00a0for examples of strategic projects we have funded through our Tropical Rainforests programme<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>WHAT WE WILL NOT FUND<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We are\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>able to offer <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">funding<\/a> for:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><a title=\"Is tree planting truly effective in combating climate change?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/is-tree-planting-truly-effective-in-combating-climate-change\">Tree planting<\/a> projects<\/li>\n<li>Projects focused solely on the use of fuel-efficient stoves<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Small Grants for Conservation Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/small-grants-for-conservation-projects-2023\">Projects with animal conservation<\/a> as the sole focus<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Vacancy: Research Project Manager\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/vacancy-research-project-manager\">Research projects<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Projects focusing on <a title=\"Grants for Environmental Education\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grants-for-environmental-education\">environmental education<\/a><\/li>\n<li>We are currently not accepting proposals for <a title=\"Following the REDD+ money\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/following-the-redd-money\">REDD<\/a> and carbon finance projects<\/li>\n<li>Projects based in countries that are not secure and politically stable.
