In this critical moment, with the global community converging to address climate challenges, ECW emphasizes the pivotal role of education as a life-saving intervention for children grappling with the impacts of emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, and ECW <a title=\"Re-advertisement: AAS Executive Director role\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/re-advertisement-aas-executive-director-role\">Executive Director<\/a>, Yasmine Sherif, join forces to underscore the profound impact of connecting climate action with education efforts. Connecting <a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climate<\/a> and education action emerges as a transformative pathway, fostering a generation that is not only environmentally aware but also equipped to contribute meaningfully to a sustainable and resilient future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one international language the world understands\u201d wrote Eglantyne Jebb, founder of Save the Children, \u201cis the cry of a child,\u201d and the evidence is accumulating that children are not only the innocent victims of conflict whose pleas need to be heard, but also the most vulnerable victims of <a title=\"Climate Change and Central Banks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-and-central-banks\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The climate crisis is an education crisis. Right here, right now, <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">climate change is robbing millions of children<\/a> and adolescents of their right to learn, their right to play and their right to feel safe and secure.<\/p>\n<p>In Pakistan deadly floods destroyed or damaged over 26,000 schools <a title=\"How forest loss has changed biodiversity across the globe over the last 150 years\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-forest-loss-has-changed-biodiversity-across-the-globe-over-the-last-150-years\">last year<\/a>. This exposed over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalprotectioncluster.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-11\/pakistan_protection-analysis_oct_2022_final_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">600,000 adolescent girls<\/a>\u00a0to higher risks of school dropout, gender-based violence, and child marriage. In Ethiopia, girls like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/unicefusa\/2023\/11\/06\/healthy-minds-healthy-bodies-in-ethiopia\/?sh=1faf7319818e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mellion<\/a>\u00a0are going hungry and risk dropping out of school forever as a result of the ongoing drought.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a title=\"WWF-T\u00fcrkiye urges protection of biodiversity amid climate crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/wwf-turkiye-urges-protection-of-biodiversity-amid-climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a> threatens the rights of every person on the planet, those who are enduring the brunt of its impact are the most vulnerable girls and boys already living in protracted crises settings due to armed conflicts, forced displacement and other crises. For them and their communities, <a title=\"Your Life\u2019s Experience with Climate Change?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/your-lifes-experience-with-climate-change\">climate change is already a daunting reality that can mean the difference between life<\/a> and death, between war and peace, between the chance to learn or not.<\/p>\n<p>Today, there are more than 224 million crisis-impacted children <a title=\"Prince Bernhard Nature Fund supporting Nature Conservation Worldwide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/prince-bernhard-nature-fund-supporting-nature-conservation-worldwide\">worldwide who urgently need education support<\/a>. New analysis by Education Cannot Wait (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationcannotwait.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECW<\/a>), the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, hosted by UNICEF, has found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationcannotwait.org\/resource-library\/futures-risk-climate-induced-shocks-and-their-toll-education-crisis-affected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">62 million<\/a>\u00a0of these children have been impacted by climate hazards such as droughts, floods, cyclones and other extreme weather events since 2020. That\u2019s close to the total populations of several G7 <a title=\"United Nations Development Programme \u2014 Pathfinder Award for Innovation in Nature Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-development-programme-pathfinder-award-for-innovation-in-nature-conservation\">nations such as the United<\/a> Kingdom, France or Italy.<\/p>\n<p>While these children have contributed least to the issue of <a title=\"Renewed red alert on food crisis in East Africa as climate change bites\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/renewed-red-alert-on-food-crisis-in-east-africa-as-climate-change-bites\">climate change<\/a>, they have the most to lose. Furthermore, over the last ten years, 31 million school-aged children have been displaced by the <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">climate<\/a> crisis, with 13 million in the last three years alone.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Global Climate Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-climate-fund\">climate crisis poses a real and present threat to global<\/a> security, economic prosperity and the very fabric of our societies. Climate impacts could cost the <a title=\"World Bank Group \u2014 Youth Summit 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/world-bank-group-youth-summit-2022\">world economy US$7.9 trillion by 2050, according to the World Bank<\/a>, and could force up to 216 million people to move within their own countries by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclones, typhoons, floods and droughts are increasing in severity and intensity. The number of disasters driven, in part, by <a title=\"What is Climate Change?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/what-is-climate-change\">climate change<\/a> has increased five-fold in the past 50 years.\u00a0Climate hazards are driving displacement directly, but also driving competition over scarce resources and threatening fragile peace in many parts of the world. Over 70% of refugees and internally displaced people on the move due to <a title=\"ICRC: Climate change and conflict combine to increase humanitarian needs in the Middle East\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/icrc-climate-change-and-conflict-combine-to-increase-humanitarian-needs-in-the-middle-east\">conflict and violence originally came from climate change<\/a> hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, these intersecting crises of <a title=\"Climate change and moisture recycling in the Amazon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-and-moisture-recycling-in-the-amazon\">climate change<\/a>, displacement and conflict are having a profound effect on education opportunities for millions of children and adolescents around the world.<\/p>\n<p>As we look at this year\u2019s Climate Talks in Dubai (<a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/what-can-we-expect-from-cop28-and-what-must-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COP28<\/a>) and the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, we must connect the dots between climate action and education action. It\u2019s our investment in our people, our planet and our future.<\/p>\n<p>To rise to this challenge, ECW is calling on donors, the private sector and other key partners to urgently mobilize\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationcannotwait.org\/resource-library\/climate-appeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US$150 million<\/a>\u00a0in additional resources. This is an important contribution towards ECW\u2019s overall resource mobilization target of US$1.5 billion toward the <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">Fund\u2019s<\/a> 2023-2026 strategic plan.<\/p>\n<p>We all know that education has a sound return on investment. Long-term investments in human capital \u2013 including education, skills training and overall health and well-being \u2013 offer<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/developmenttalk\/education-and-climate-change-critical-role-adaptation-investments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a010 times more return on investment<\/a>\u00a0than investments in physical capital. By investing in education today, we are investing in economic and social prosperity tomorrow, we are investing in an end to displacement and hunger, we are investing in a better world and children\u2019s futures.<\/p>\n<p>The climate crisis threatens to end human civilization as we know it today. Now is our time to <a title=\"How to Address the Complicated Issue of Water Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/how-to-address-the-complicated-issue-of-water-conservation\">address this issue<\/a> head on, and education plays a key role.
