S\/he will be offered continuous and careful mentoring aimed at strengthening her\/his skillset and boosting her\/his <a title=\"AWARD One Planet Fellowship call for young climate researchers seeking career acceleration opportunity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/award-one-planet-fellowship-call-for-young-climate-researchers-seeking-career-acceleration-opportunity\">career opportunities<\/a>, but also broad independence in research activities and unrestricted intellectual freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to enhance her\/his professional growth by benefitting from various <a title=\"Women in the Field skills based training program \u2013 call for participants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/women-in-the-field-skills-based-training-program-call-for-participants\">training programs and by participating<\/a> to scientific workshops and conferences. S\/he will be <a title=\"Research Grants for Field Research 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/research-grants-for-field-research-2024\">granted<\/a> access to state of the art computational facilities. Furthermore, the unique environment of the JRC will <a title=\"Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust \u2014 Grants for Research and Training 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stanley-smith-horticultural-trust-grants-for-research-and-training-2024\">grant<\/a> the successful candidate a privileged position to provide a concrete contribution to societal change by working at the very edge of science-policy interface.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d<\/p>\n<p><strong>We propose:<br \/>\n<\/strong>The vacancy is within the Exploratory Research Project \u201cREloading the Anthropocene to Decode Mass Extinction (README)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropogenic global change is causing dramatic <a title=\"Report Urges Financial Sector to Take Action and Reverse Biodiversity Loss\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/report-urges-financial-sector-to-take-action-and-reverse-biodiversity-loss\">biodiversity loss<\/a>, still there are fundamental knowledge gaps on extinction mechanisms and processes, and on the actual severity of the biodiversity crisis. Most studies on <a title=\"Climate Change &amp; Environmental Justice Fellowship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-environmental-justice-fellowship-2\">biodiversity change<\/a> face the unresolved challenge of identifying a proper frame of reference. This issue has critical implications for <a title=\"UK \u2013 France Global Roadmap launched to mobilise global nature finance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/uk-france-global-roadmap-launched-to-mobilise-global-nature-finance\">biodiversity<\/a> monitoring, conservation and restoration.<\/p>\n<p>\u200dThe project README aims at tackling this challenge by devising realistic models of <a title=\"Financial Flow Roadmap: Aligning with Global Biodiversity Framework\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/financial-flow-roadmap-aligning-with-global-biodiversity-framework\">global scale ecological dynamics to simulate planetary biodiversity<\/a> change from the onset of industrial revolution to present days. This will permit to: (1) obtain an accurate reconstruction of anthropogenic <a title=\"Whale Falls: Lessons on Biodiversity and Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/whale-falls-lessons-on-biodiversity-and-climate-change\">biodiversity change<\/a> in time and space; (2) advance knowledge on mass extinction drivers and mechanisms, revealing where, when and how humans have impacted the biosphere in the last centuries; (3) tackle the \u201cshifting baselines\u201d problem by providing a frame of reference to assess current and future biodiversity change, as well as to identify proper conservation and restoration targets.<\/p>\n<p>\u200dThe successful candidate will contribute to the development of realistic models of global scale ecological dynamics to simulate planetary <a title=\"Stone Walls &amp; Harbors: Surprising Biodiversity Havens\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/stone-walls-harbors-surprising-biodiversity-havens\">biodiversity<\/a> change from the onset of industrial revolution to present days. This will permit to: (1) obtain an accurate reconstruction of anthropogenic <a title=\"Funding Advances Biodiversity Net Gain Progress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-advances-biodiversity-net-gain-progress\">biodiversity<\/a> change in time and space; (2) advance knowledge on mass extinction drivers and mechanisms, revealing where, when and how humans have impacted the biosphere in the last centuries; (3) provide a frame of reference to assess current and future biodiversity change, as well as to identify proper conservation and restoration targets.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d<strong>More specifically, s\/he will contribute to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The collection and harmonization of environmental, <a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climatic<\/a> and ecological data;<\/li>\n<li>The development of a global scale multispecies community model to simulate <a title=\"Tropical Trees Employ Social Distancing for Biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tropical-trees-employ-social-distancing-for-biodiversity\">biodiversity<\/a> processes at high temporal and spatial resolution;<\/li>\n<li>The simulation of global scale <a title=\"Biodiversity offsets under fire as EU updates green finance taxonomy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-offsets-under-fire-as-eu-updates-green-finance-taxonomy\">biodiversity<\/a> dynamics from the second industrial revolution to modern days, with the aim of pinpointing the onset of the Anthropocene in space and time;<\/li>\n<li>Various side research activities aimed, amongst the others, at improving our understanding of extinction mechanisms through the use of in-silico Artificial Life simulations and the analysis of <a title=\"Record Trillion in Fossil Fuel Subsidies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/record-7-trillion-in-fossil-fuel-subsidies\">fossil<\/a> data;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Recent scientific briefs provide information about the Global Biodiversity Framework goals.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/recent-scientific-briefs-provide-information-about-the-global-biodiversity-framework-goals\">Provide regular and accurate reports on scientific<\/a> activities every twelve months and a final report;<\/li>\n<li>Report to the Project Leader on progress, achievements and potential problems in a timely manner;<\/li>\n<li>Provide feedback and maintain interactive <a title=\"Community rights and REDD+ in Indonesia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/community-rights-and-redd-in-indonesia\">communication<\/a> with colleagues;<\/li>\n<li>Explain the research activities and achievements to third parties, such as scientific <a title=\"Post-COP28 questions linger for climate-impacted communities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/post-cop28-questions-linger-for-climate-impacted-communities\">communities<\/a> and the general public;<\/li>\n<li>Write, disseminate and <a title=\"Papers published during 2014\/2015 by staff in various international journals;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/papers-published-during-2014-2015-by-staff-in-various-international-journals\">publish results in peer-reviewed journals<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We look for:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A highly motivated scientist with the following essential qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A doctoral diploma in ecology, environmental sciences, <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystem<\/a> modelling or related fields. Alternatively, completed university studies of at least three <a title=\"FIELD PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR BSC. FORESTRY- FIRST YEAR STUDENTS UNDERTAKING COURSE OF FUNDAMENTALS OF ECOLOGY (FBL 102)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/field-practical-training-for-bsc-forestry-first-year-students-undertaking-course-of-fundamentals-of-ecology-fbl-102\">years attested by a diploma and at least five years professional experience in a field<\/a> relevant to the position;<\/li>\n<li>Extensive knowledge and experience in the collection and analysis of large geospatial environmental and <a title=\"Postdoctoral Fellow in Ecological Outcome Assessment in Complex Social-Ecological Systems\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/postdoctoral-fellow-in-ecological-outcome-assessment-in-complex-social-ecological-systems\">ecological<\/a> datasets;<\/li>\n<li>Have an analytical mind-set and solid modelling skills to collect and make sense of large volumes of information, and make decisions or recommendations based on solid analysis;<\/li>\n<li>Broad knowledge of ecological theory and experience in <a title=\"Why mitigating biodiversity loss matters\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/why-mitigating-biodiversity-loss-matters\">biodiversity<\/a> analysis and modelling (e.g. ecological niche models, <a title=\"FBE 616 Ecosystem Modelling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbe-616-ecosystem-modelling\">ecosystem modelling<\/a>, metacommunity pattern analysis);<\/li>\n<li>Strong experience with numerical computing languages (e.g. Python, R, Julia);<\/li>\n<li>Basic knowledge of cloud, parallel and GPU computing;<\/li>\n<li>Solid record of research activities documented by <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">publications<\/a> in international peer-reviewed journals;<\/li>\n<li>Good oral and written communication skills in English (B2).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In addition, the following competences will be considered an advantage:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Familiarity with network science (e.g. ecological network analysis, food-web modelling);<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of low level programming languages (e.g. C++, C#, COBOL);<\/li>\n<li>Multidisciplinary interests and mindset (e.g. math, physics, social sciences, astrobiology etc.);<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work in a team and in a multi-cultural environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The candidate is expected to be creative and work independently<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/jobderef\/1007724\/https%3A%2F%2Fec.europa.eu%2Fjrc%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Joint Research Centre (JRC)<\/a>\u00a0provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.<\/p>\n<p>\u200dThe vacancy is within the Directorate for Sustainable Resources.
