{"id":9354,"date":"2024-02-23T12:40:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T09:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/?p=9354"},"modified":"2024-02-23T13:22:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T10:22:24","slug":"2-phd-scholarships-available-call-for-applications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2-phd-scholarships-available-call-for-applications","title":{"rendered":"2 PhD Scholarships Available \u2013 Call for Applications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism of the Sokoine University of Agriculture, in collaboration with Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, hereby invites interested and qualified citizens of Tanzania (holding Master\u2019s degree or equivalent) to submit applications for 2 PhD scholarships under the Danida financed project \u201cClimate, pollinator biodiversity, crop pollination and people\u00b4s livelihoods\u201d (CPBCPP). As the PhD projects are part of the CPBCPP project, the two PhD students will work closely together with a PhD student hired at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The two students will be enrolled at the Sokoine University of Agriculture, with research stays at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship duration is a maximum of four years, and will commence on July 1, 2024. The <a title=\"PhD position in remote sensing and biodiversity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-position-in-remote-sensing-and-biodiversity\">PhD<\/a> scholars will be supervised by a joint team of senior academics from the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism, TAFORI and the University of Copenhagen, and will be provided PhD level training in both university environments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements for the 2 scholarships:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a title=\"Call for Applications \u2013 PASET RSIF PhD scholarships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-applications-paset-rsif-phd-scholarships\">PhD scholarship<\/a> #1 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This PhD project will examine how changing climatic conditions influence pollinators diversity and pollination limitation of food crops grown by smallholder farmers along an elevation and climate gradient in the Eastern Arc Mountains (EAMs) in <a title=\"New publication: Predicting the distribution of critically endangered tree species Karomia gigas under climate change in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication-predicting-the-distribution-of-critically-endangered-tree-species-karomia-gigas-under-climate-change-in-tanzania\">Tanzania<\/a>. Along the elevation and <a title=\"Funding for Climate or Clean Energy Projects\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-for-climate-or-clean-energy-projects-3\">climate<\/a> gradient, the PhD candidate will estimate pollinator diversity and conduct pollinator experiments to estimate fruit-set of crops. To design <a title=\"Funding: Climate-resilient Action in African Countries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funding-climate-resilient-action-in-african-countries\">climate<\/a>-smart and pollinatorfriendly agricultural systems, the PhD student will also use future climate scenarios and species distribution models (SDMs) to model the future distribution of the pollinators of the crops grown in the EAMs. The PhD student should be <a title=\"Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Prepares to Celebrate its 42nd Graduation Ceremony at Edward Moringe Campus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/sokoine-university-of-agriculture-sua-prepares-to-celebrate-its-42nd-graduation-ceremony-at-edward-moringe-campus\">prepared to collect data for approximately 8 months and work closely together with other SUA PhD students and a University<\/a> of Copenhagen-based PhD student.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a title=\"DAAD PhD Scholarships\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/daad-phd-scholarships\">PhD scholarship<\/a> #2 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This PhD <a title=\"Technical Manager Climate Projects, Sustainable Technologies (ST) \u2013 Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/technical-manager-climate-projects-sustainable-technologies-st-africa\">project aims at testing the performance of beekeeping in increasing crop yield along an elevation and climate<\/a> gradient in the Eastern Arc Mountains (EAMs) in Tanzania. To do so, the <a title=\"PhD Candidate Post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-candidate-post\">PhD candidate<\/a> will randomly select 50 farms to implement beekeeping practices and 50 \u2018control\u2019 farms without beekeeping activities along the elevation\/climate gradient. On the farms to <a title=\"National Beekeeping Policy Implementation Strategy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/national-beekeeping-policy-implementation-strategy\">implement beekeeping<\/a> practices, TAFORI (with the help of selected PhD candidate) will be in charge of installing beehives. After approximately 6 months of letting the beehives develop, the PhD candidate will follow the same protocol as PhD scholarship #1 to estimate pollinator diversity and conduct the same pollinator experiments to estimate fruit-set. This will enable the PhD candidate to quantify the increase in fruit-set due to beekeeping along the <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate<\/a> gradient. The PhD student should be prepared to collect data for approximately 8 months and work closely together with other SUA PhD students and a University of Copenhagen-based PhD student.<\/p>\n<p>Interested applicants should submit a letter of application indicating the scholarship being applied for (#1 or 2), a Curriculum Vitae, a <a title=\"PhD Research Concept Note: Invasion, impacts and management of Prosopis and Water Hyacinth in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/phd-research-concept-note-invasion-impacts-and-management-of-prosopis-and-water-hyacinth-in-tanzania\">concept note<\/a> of a maximum of 2,000 words (outlining and justifying research questions\/objectives, describing relevant theories, and indicating study approach\/design and methods), scanned copies of certificates and names of two academic referees. Other important criteria for selection are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professional qualifications relevant to the CPBCPP <a title=\"Call for Projects 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-projects-2023\">project<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Interest in conducting fieldwork, including working remotely and in challenging field conditions<\/li>\n<li>Field work experience, preferably focused on plant-pollinator interactions and natural history<\/li>\n<li>Experience with quantitative analysis of data, preferably in R<\/li>\n<li>Good interpersonal skills, an interest in working within a team, openness to different cultures and a flexible mindset \u2022 Other professional activities<\/li>\n<li>A curious mindset with a strong interest in combining fieldwork <a title=\"Scientist in flood modelling and satellite EO data assimilation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/scientist-in-flood-modelling-and-satellite-eo-data-assimilation\">data with modelling<\/a> \u2022 A valid driving licence<\/li>\n<li>The grade point average achieved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If further clarification is needed, please contact Dr Rose Kicheleri at rose.kicheleri@sua.ac.tz.
