UN climate chief Simon Stiell has said he hopes to see fewer people attend the annual COP climate negotiations after participants at COP28 in Dubai last December hit a\u00a0record high<\/a>\u00a0of nearly 84,000.<\/p>\n Stiell said this month that he personally \u201cwould certainly like to see future COPs reduce in size\u201d, telling an audience at London\u2019s Chatham House think-tank that\u00a0\u201cbigger doesn\u2019t necessarily mean better\u201d.<\/p>\n In Dubai, where the 2023 summit was held from November 30 to December 13, the Expo City site was so large that important delegates were ferried around on golf buggies while electric scooters were available to get around the public area, known as the Green Zone.<\/p>\n \u201cSize does not necessarily translate to the quality of outcomes,\u201d Stiell said in London, noting that the UN climate change<\/a> secretariat (UNFCCC) is discussing the issue with the hosts of COP29 in Azerbaijan this year and COP30 next year in Brazil.<\/p>\n
