Estimates suggest that approximately US$ 950 billion annually is needed for this crucial endeavor, essential for sustaining livelihoods and preserving biodiversity. However, the current allocation falls significantly short, with only an average of US$ 121 billion directed towards biodiversity conservation each year.<\/p>\n<p>Closing this financing gap is paramount, demanding concerted efforts from <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">governments<\/a>, the private sector, NGOs, and local communities. Collaboration on a global scale is essential to effectively mobilize resources and allocate them towards <a title=\"Shared vision for biodiversity conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/shared-vision-for-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation<\/a> initiatives. Governments play a crucial role in establishing policies and frameworks that incentivize <a title=\"Let\u2019s honor those who have protected Indiana\u2019s natural places through conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/lets-honor-those-who-have-protected-indianas-natural-places-through-conservation\">conservation<\/a> efforts and allocate sufficient funding. The private sector can contribute through corporate responsibility initiatives, sustainable investment practices, and partnerships with <a title=\"Oklahoma City Zoo &amp; Botanical Garden: Conservation Grants 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/oklahoma-city-zoo-botanical-garden-conservation-grants-2023\">conservation<\/a> organizations. NGOs play a vital role in advocacy, implementation of <a title=\"ONLINE COURSE: Designing Conservation Projects and Measuring Impact\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/online-course-designing-conservation-projects-and-measuring-impact\">conservation projects<\/a>, and community engagement. Local communities are key stakeholders whose involvement is essential for the success and sustainability of conservation efforts, as they often hold invaluable knowledge about their <a title=\"Ecosystems and Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystems-and-conservation\">ecosystems and can actively participate in conservation<\/a> activities.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, innovative financing mechanisms and partnerships are needed to unlock additional funding streams for <a title=\"Awards in Biodiversity Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/awards-in-biodiversity-conservation-2\">biodiversity conservation<\/a>. This could include leveraging private sector investments through mechanisms such as green bonds, impact investing, and payment for <a title=\"Ecosystem Services\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/ecosystem-services\">ecosystem services<\/a> schemes. Additionally, exploring avenues for debt-for-nature swaps, where a portion of a country&#8217;s debt is forgiven in exchange for investments in conservation, can provide alternative sources of <a title=\"Funguo Innovation Programme 2nd Funding Round\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/funguo-innovation-programme-2nd-funding-round\">funding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Investing in <a title=\"Increasing species coverage to support global biodiversity conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/increasing-species-coverage-to-support-global-biodiversity-conservation\">biodiversity conservation not only safeguards ecosystems and species<\/a> but also delivers a wide range of socio-economic benefits, including clean air and water, climate regulation, and sustainable livelihoods for communities dependent on natural resources. By closing the financing <a title=\"Biodiversity Research and Conservation Gaps\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/biodiversity-research-and-conservation-gaps\">gap and prioritizing biodiversity conservation<\/a>, we can ensure a resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its inception in 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biofin.org\/\" data-extlink=\"\">the United Nations Development Programme&#8217;s Biodiversity Finance Initiative<\/a>\u00a0(UNDP-BIOFIN) has played an important role in assisting 41 countries worldwide in developing biodiversity financing plans and mobilizing resources for conservation efforts. Its <a title=\"Calling for innovative ocean-minded startups\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/calling-for-innovative-ocean-minded-startups\">innovative<\/a> approach enables countries to measure current biodiversity expenditures,\u00a0determine financial needs, and identify suitable finance solutions to bridge national biodiversity finance gaps. In 2024, 91 more countries will embark on this journey with the help of the <a title=\"Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) invites proposals for project funding\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/global-biodiversity-information-facility-gbif-invites-proposals-for-project-funding\">Global Environment Facility<\/a> and UNDP-BIOFIN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annually, UNDP-BIOFIN organizes regional dialogues worldwide to exchange best practices and refine strategies, mechanisms, and methodologies. From 3-5 April, the 10th <a title=\"UNICEF: Climate change endangers 45M African children\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/unicef-climate-change-endangers-45m-african-children\">Africa<\/a> Regional Dialogue for Biodiversity Finance was held in\u00a0Blantyre,\u00a0Malawi. Over 70 biodiversity finance experts and government officials from 16 countries convened to share experiences, discuss the effective implementation of Biodiversity <a title=\"Vacant: Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Finance And Administration)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/deputy-vice-chancellor-planning-finance-and-administration\">Finance Plans<\/a>, and explore opportunities for finance solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, we have catalyzed US$400 million and unlocked US$1 billion in <a title=\"New publication\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/new-publication\">public<\/a> finance for conservations purposes. We collaborate with local communities, civil society, <a title=\"Botany and Ecology Field Practical Training at Saadani National Park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/botany-and-ecology-field-practical-training-at-saadani-national-park\">national parks<\/a>, private entities, and government organizations to secure the financing needed to achieve biodiversity objectives on the ground,&#8221; said Bruno Mweemba, BIOFIN\u2019s Technical Advisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malawi joined the global BIOFIN partnership in 2018 and identified a need for US$93 <a title=\"36-Million-Year Cycle Drives Biodiversity, Say Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/36-million-year-cycle-drives-biodiversity-say-scientists\">million<\/a> from 2020-2025 to meet national and sub-national biodiversity targets outlined in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). The BIOFIN <a title=\"United Nations Development Programme \u2014 Pathfinder Award for Innovation in Nature Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-development-programme-pathfinder-award-for-innovation-in-nature-conservation\">programme in Malawi developed<\/a> a Biodiversity Finance Plan, outlining priority finance solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biodiversity is a major economic and <a title=\"Social Innovations for the Developing World\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/social-innovations-for-the-developing-world\">social development<\/a> driver in Malawi, contributing significantly to food security, ecotourism, social benefits, recreation, and sectoral job creation within various sectors. Despite its importance, biodiversity was not previously prioritized. BIOFIN&#8217;s National Biodiversity Expenditure Review facilitated full integration of biodiversity into national <a title=\"Tackling Biodiversity loss in England through the planning system\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tackling-biodiversity-loss-in-england-through-the-planning-system\">planning agendas and financial systems<\/a>. We have identified 11 finance solutions to generate US$6.3 million between 2021-2025 in Malawi,&#8221; Hilton Msamali,\u00a0stated the National BIOFIN Technical Coordinator in Malawi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his remarks the Minister of Natural Resources and <a title=\"Grassroots Multilateralism for Tackling Climate Change and Beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grassroots-multilateralism-for-tackling-climate-change-and-beyond\">Climate Change<\/a>, Hon. Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi commented, \u201cconservation has a huge cost, it costs money to recruit human resources that protect our biodiversity hotspots; remove invasive alien species; reduce poaching; prevent <a title=\"Invasive moths, beetles putting local forests at risk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/invasive-moths-beetles-putting-local-forests-at-risk\">deforestation<\/a> and sustain the ecosystem services.\u201d He further said, \u201cincreasing budget expenditure for biodiversity conservation is not only a moral imperative but also an investment in our collective future. We need to act swiftly and decisively to prioritize biodiversity <a title=\"High Extinction Risks in Atlantic Forest Trees: Comprehensive conservation assessments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/high-extinction-risks-in-atlantic-forest-trees-comprehensive-conservation-assessments\">conservation<\/a> in the national budget and demonstrate our country&#8217;s commitment to preserving the rich biodiversity for sustainable economic development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regional dialogue covered diverse financing opportunities for biodiversity, including financial sector participation, positive incentives, <a title=\"coLABS Impact Investing Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/colabs-impact-investing-fund\">impact investments<\/a>, repurposing harmful subsidies and community engagement. Participants discussed payments for <a title=\"FBE 606 Assessment and Mapping of Ecosystem Services t\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbe-606-assessment-and-mapping-of-ecosystem-services-t\">ecosystem services<\/a>, digital finance solutions and other topics. At the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), countries committed to update their <a title=\"Multi-stakeholder workshop for the National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/multi-stakeholder-workshop-for-the-national-bamboo-development-strategy-and-action-plan\">national biodiversity strategies and action<\/a> plans and biodiversity financing plans, which are crucial for closing biodiversity financing gaps and implementing the CBD at the national level. Participants discussed how countries can maximize their impact on biodiversity conservation efforts by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biofin.org\/knowledge-product\/how-can-biodiversity-finance-plans-support-nbsaps\" data-extlink=\"\">integrating these two plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing biodiversity finance is critical for environmental <a title=\"Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Environments (RISE) Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/resilient-inclusive-and-sustainable-environments-rise-grant\">sustainability<\/a>, human well-being, and the achievement of global development goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The imperative to restore and protect the imperiled ecosystems of our planet is clear, requiring substantial financial investment.
