Bee campaigners are also asking people everywhere to do more to help and <a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\">protect<\/a> the special insects.<\/p>\n<div>World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20 to mark the birth anniversary of Anton Jansa, who has mastered the skill of <a title=\"California storms hit beekeepers, but honey outlook\u2019s sweet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/california-storms-hit-beekeepers-but-honey-outlooks-sweet\">beekeeping<\/a>. The <a title=\"United Nations Development Programme \u2014 Pathfinder Award for Innovation in Nature Conservation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/united-nations-development-programme-pathfinder-award-for-innovation-in-nature-conservation\">United Nations<\/a> established this day in 2017 after understanding the critical role of bees in ensuring food security, biodiversity and sustainable agriculture.<\/div>\n<div>The annual event, World Bee Day, is celebrated to make people aware of the role of bees and other pollinators in maintaining the <a title=\"Climate change creates health risks for 70% of global workers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-creates-health-risks-for-70-of-global-workers\">health<\/a> of our planet and ensuring food security. It also aims to promote <a title=\"Why mitigating biodiversity loss matters\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/why-mitigating-biodiversity-loss-matters\">biodiversity<\/a> and sustainable agriculture. May 20 marks the birth anniversary of Anton Jansa, a pioneer of modern <a title=\"Tech Enriches Beekeepers in Beijing\u2019s Miyun\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/tech-enriches-beekeepers-in-beijings-miyun\">beekeeping<\/a>, born in 1734. With the Slovenian Government and NGO Apimondia\u2019s support, the UN General Assembly adopted this <a title=\"World Bee Day 2022 in Tanzania\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/world-bee-day-2022\">day to honour the significance of bees<\/a> and other pollinators. The first World Bee Day was celebrated on May 20, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Bee Day 2024: Significance<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bees play a vital role in the environment by pollinating plants, supporting agriculture, promoting biodiversity, and also ensuring the survival of many plant species. Beekeeping plays a significant role in providing a livelihood for millions of people across the world. Unfortunately, the bee population is reducing significantly due to factors such as habitat loss, pesticide use, and <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate change<\/a>. World Bee Day highlights the need to protect these essential creatures and promotes sustainable practices to protect their future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The theme for World Bee Day 2024 is &#8220;Bee Engaged with Youth.&#8221; The theme highlights that the youth can play in protecting bees and other pollinators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is World Bee Day 2024 celebrated?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Every year, World Bee Day is celebrated in different ways to spread awareness and support for bees and beekeeping:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People visit local beekeepers to learn more about their work and the importance of bees.<\/li>\n<li>Set up small bee farms in gardens or terraces to support the bee population.<\/li>\n<li>Dress up like bees in costume and compete in bee-related activities. It spreads awareness through fun competitions and events.<\/li>\n<li>Support <a title=\"Hobbyists Vital for Bee Industry Success\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/hobbyists-vital-for-bee-industry-success\">beekeeping charities and organisations that solely focus on bee<\/a> conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interesting facts about bees<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Honeybees can fly up to six miles at 15 miles per hour.<\/li>\n<li>An average bee produces a teaspoon of <a title=\"Honey production sweetens snow leopard conservation in Kyrgyzstan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/honey-production-sweetens-snow-leopard-conservation-in-kyrgyzstan\">honey<\/a> in its lifetime.<\/li>\n<li>For one kg of honey, bees fly around 90,000 miles and visit around two million flowers.<\/li>\n<li>Only <a title=\"Grants for Female Early-Career Scientist\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/grants-for-female-early-career-scientist-2\">female<\/a> bees sting and they die after stinging.<\/li>\n<li>There are over 20,000 different species of bees in the world except for Antarctica.<\/li>\n<li>Bees are the only social insects which are partially domesticated by humans.<\/li>\n<li>A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a single collection trip.<\/li>\n<li>Bees don&#8217;t have knees, they have jointed legs.<\/li>\n<li>Bees communicate through dancing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Tanzania, World Bee Day is celebrated annually on May 20, 2024, in the capital city, Dodoma, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of bees and other pollinators for <a title=\"Call for Project Grant 2021: Sustainable development and climate change.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-project-grant-2021-sustainable-development-and-climate-change\">sustainable development<\/a>, biodiversity, and food security. This event often garners attention from various stakeholders in the environmental and agricultural sectors, including retired and current officials who have significantly contributed to these fields. The celebration in Dodoma, Tanzania, saw the attendance of notable figures such as Dr. Felician Kilahama, Dr. Ezekiel Mwakalukwa (currently from the <a title=\"First batch of Postgraduate students selected 2022\/2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/first-batch-of-postgraduate-students-selected-2022-2023\">Department of Ecosystems and Conservation<\/a>), Monica Kagya,
