Despite efforts, extreme weather, pollution and <a title=\"Call for consultancy services: recruitment of experts to review and synthesise information on the nexus between climate change, forests and trees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-recruitment-of-experts-to-review-and-synthesise-information-on-the-nexus-between-climate-change-forests-and-trees\">climate change<\/a> are threatening children&#8217;s right to a happy and healthy life. Children and young people across South Asia, and globally, are demanding urgent action to <a title=\"Protected and Conserved Area Fund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/protected-and-conserved-area-fund\">protect<\/a> their rights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field_component_sec_blocks-item even\">\n<div class=\"text--block-content section-block-content\">\n<div class=\"comp-txt\">\n<div class=\"field paragraph field_component_text_content odd-t text_long\">\n<p><strong>How are children&#8217;s rights affected by climate change?<br \/>\n<\/strong>South Asia is a climate hotspot. The most impacted are those least responsible for this crisis &#8211; the nearly 660 million children and nearly 350 million young people who <a title=\"2024 Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program Applications Open\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2024-jacobs-foundation-research-fellowship-program-applications-open\">call<\/a> this region their home.<\/p>\n<p>The region is increasingly battered by record-breaking heatwaves, devastating floods, frigid temperatures, catastrophic storms, and prolonged droughts.<\/p>\n<p>76 per cent of children in this region are grappling with rising temperatures and dangerous pollution, while nearly 350 million face a lack of clean <a title=\"Researcher \u2013 Integrated Water Modeling and Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/researcher-integrated-water-modeling-and-assessment\">water<\/a>. In fact, every child in South Asia is affected by at least one climate-related hazard, shock or stress.<\/p>\n<p>These back-to-back disasters have uprooted millions of children from their homes, disrupting their learning and depriving them of lifesaving healthcare, including vaccines. Many such children are contending with multiple challenges, including the deaths of loved ones, poverty, abuse and exploitation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>What is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and a General Comment?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an important agreement by countries to promote and protect children&#8217;s rights. The Convention explains who children are, all their rights, and the responsibilities of <a title=\"Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/forest-governance-scholarship-for-phd\">governments<\/a> to protect, promote and fulfill children&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p>A General Comment provides legal guidance on what these rights imply for a specific topic or area of legislation. For example, General Comment No. 26 explains to governments how children&#8217;s rights are related to the environment and <a title=\"Enhancing Climate Challenge Mitigation Through Improved Monitoring in East Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/enhancing-climate-challenge-mitigation-through-improved-monitoring-in-east-africa\">climate change<\/a>, and what governments must do to protect them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field_component_sec_blocks-item even\">\n<div class=\"text--block-content section-block-content\">\n<div class=\"comp-txt\">\n<div class=\"field paragraph field_component_text_content odd-t text_long\">\n<h4><strong>How does General Comment No. 26 guide governments on children&#8217;s rights?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In August <a title=\"2023: Warmest Year on Record\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/2023-warmest-year-on-record\">2023<\/a>, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child consolidated the views and ideas of over 16,000 children from 121 countries to create General Comment No. 26 (GC26).<\/p>\n<p>GC26 affirms every child&#8217;s right to a clean, healthy and <a title=\"Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Environments (RISE) Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/resilient-inclusive-and-sustainable-environments-rise-grant\">sustainable environment<\/a> and the need to promote and protect it at all costs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hrbodies\/crc\/gcomments\/gc26\/2023\/GC26-Child-Friendly-Version_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is how the GC26 protects every child&#8217;s right to survive and thrive.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field_component_sec_blocks-item even\">\n<div class=\"text--block-content section-block-content\">\n<div class=\"comp-txt\">\n<div class=\"field paragraph field_component_text_content odd-t text_long\">\n<p><strong>What is the GC26 calling upon governments to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Governments <a title=\"Climate Change Impact on Beaches: Need for Green Thinking\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-impact-on-beaches-need-for-green-thinking\">need to reduce the impact of climate change<\/a> by taking urgent action.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure children and young people have a seat at the table while developing adaptation plans and decisions to <a title=\"UN Urges States to Protect Children\u2019s Rights Amidst Climate Change\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/un-urges-states-to-protect-childrens-rights-amidst-climate-change\">protect children affected by climate change<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Provide financial and technical support to countries facing losses and damages affecting children&#8217;s rights.<\/li>\n<li>Hold businesses accountable for reducing their <a title=\"Trends and projections: limited rebound in EU emissions amid post-pandemic recovery and energy crisis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/trends-and-projections-limited-rebound-in-eu-emissions-amid-post-pandemic-recovery-and-energy-crisis\">emissions and supporting renewable energy<\/a>. Also, ensure that investments made to <a title=\"GMES &amp; Africa Strengthens Synergy with PolicyMakers to Address Climate Change Effects through EO Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/gmes-africa-strengthens-synergy-with-policymakers-to-address-climate-change-effects-through-eo-technologies\">address the cause and consequences of climate change<\/a> do not violate children&#8217;s rights.<\/li>\n<li>Integrate children&#8217;s rights into all climate-related decision-making processes and vice versa.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct regular Child Rights <a title=\"FBL 204: Ecological Impact Assessment and Environmental Planning\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/study\/fbl-204-ecological-impact-assessment-and-environmental-planning\">Impact Assessments<\/a> to understand and address how environmental decisions affect children from different ages and backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>Enforce laws, regulations, and <a title=\"Call for consultancy services on strengthening capacity for policy change to improve REDD+ implementation and integration in Africa: capitalizing on best practices and lessons learnt in an evolving environment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/call-for-consultancy-services-on-strengthening-capacity-for-policy-change-to-improve-redd-implementation-and-integration-in-africa-capitalizing-on-best-practices-and-lessons-learnt-in-an-evolving-en\">policies<\/a> that prevent environmental pollution.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that children have access to national, regional, and <a title=\"Explore#6 Call For Projects, Support for International Mobility\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/explore6-call-for-projects-support-for-international-mobility\">international justice to address harm and receive support<\/a> and compensation.<\/li>\n<li>Foster <a title=\"Korea International Water Week \u2014 World Water Challenge 2022\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/korea-international-water-week-world-water-challenge-2022\">international cooperation to address environmental challenges<\/a>, recognising that these issues transcend borders. Countries with greater responsibility for environmental harm should take more action and support those most affected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"field_component_sec_blocks-item even\">\n<div class=\"text--block-content section-block-content\">\n<div class=\"comp-txt\">\n<div class=\"field paragraph field_component_text_content odd-t text_long\">\n<p><strong>How can you use GC26 in your advocacy with governments and decision-makers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speak with your elected representatives to integrate <a title=\"Shifting Special Drawing Rights for Climate Action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/shifting-special-drawing-rights-for-climate-action\">climate action<\/a> into local policies, plans, and laws.<\/li>\n<li>Become child rights advocates and emphasise the importance of incorporating children&#8217;s views and participation in environmental decision-making and discussions to ensure a <a title=\"Schneider Electric Foundation: Youth Innovation for a Sustainable Future Program\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/schneider-electric-foundation-youth-innovation-for-a-sustainable-future-program\">sustainable future<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Help foster opportunities, such as tailored <a title=\"Women in the Field skills based training program \u2013 call for participants\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/women-in-the-field-skills-based-training-program-call-for-participants\">training programs<\/a>, to empower children to take action, advocate, and safeguard themselves from environmental damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field_component_sec_blocks-item odd\">\n<div class=\"text--block-content section-block-content\">\n<div class=\"comp-txt\">\n<div class=\"field paragraph field_component_text_content odd-t text_long\">\n<p>GC26 reflects the voices of children <a title=\"Climate change impacts, risks and adaptation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfwt.sua.ac.tz\/ecosystems\/news\/climate-change-impacts-risks-and-adaptation\">impacted by climate change<\/a>. It is imperative for governments, policymakers, and leaders to take action to protect the future and rights of every child.
